More than 335 miles of accessible passages make Mammoth Cave in Kentucky the world's longest cave. Lechuguilla Cave, part of Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, is the nation's deepest at 1,567 feet. Together, these two caves attract more than 2,000,000 visitors annually. What natural processes make caves so fascinating? The most common caves are solution caves. They form when soluble carbonate rock, such as limestone, dolomite, marble, or gypsum, is dissolved by groundwater. Limestone makes up the majority of caves in the United States. In addition to soluble carbonate rock, two additional factors must be present for caves to form. First, rainwater seeps through cracks in the bedrock, absorbing carbon dioxide (CO

Underwater Robot Captures Video of Skulls and Strange Cave Life to Support Scientific Research for National Geographic Printer-friendly version

Kolb, director of research and development, and Christ, field mission expert, spent two weeks in the jungle accompanying photographers and scientists. With the VideoRay, they reached depths and captured underwater photographs that might not be possible by divers; identified water conditions; observed isopods and other cave life; and explored tiny passages too small and dangerous for divers. Equipped with a Sony 5 mega pixel camera with a wide-angle adapter, the VideoRay took high-resolution photos of the sacred underwater caves. Kolb described how he and Christ would lug the 70-pound (30 kilo) VideoRay equipment into the jungle each day, thankful it was much lighter than the SCUBA equipment the divers required. Then, Kolb and Christ would lower the VideoRay to a Cenote, start up the tiny generator, and stay for hours measuring water parameters and looking for cave biology. In Cenote Sabak Ha, Kolb recalls tying a chicken foot to the

Objective
To understand that microorganisms can survive in many different environments and that microorganisms live in places where conditions are suitable for their growth.
  • copy of "Microbial Townhouse" student handout ( PDF or HTML hard-boiled egg 5 cups of mud 1 cup of de-chlorinated water bucket large stirring spoon 1 tablespoon powdered chalk 2-liter clear plastic bottle with top cut off paper cup plastic wrap rubber band sheet of red cellophane or acetate (for one group only)
Tell students that they will be studying how microorganism populations grow in different mediums and how they change the environment in which they live. They will be creating three mud columns to study how different microbes will inhabit different environments, depending on the conditions that exist. Have students collect mud. The best mud comes from the margins of fresh or saltwater ponds or marshes. Moist field soils can be used, but are less likely to produce easily observed microorganisms. Cut off the plastic bottle tops. Hard boil the eggs. Organize students into three groups and distribute a copy of the "Microbial Townhouse" student handout and a set of materials to each group.
