Pinaceae (The pine family) return to Coniferophyta page Monoecious trees with spirally arranged leaves. Essentually an evergreen group though Larix is deciduous. Microsporangia are borne in pairs on the microsporophylls and ovules are borne in pairs on the seed scales. The group ranges throughout the northern hemisphere and is extensively planted in the southern. Includes ecologically and economically important genera including pine, spruce, hemlock and Douglas fir. Individuals of bristle-cone pine ( Pinus longavea ) are the world's oldest trees. Publications Research Root Biology and Mycorrhiza Research Group My research involves the interaction between fungi and plants, with an emphasis on mutualistic symbioses (mycorrhizas). I am particularly interested in cellular and subcellular changes that occur in both symbionts as various associations develop. My goal is to understand how fungi are able to attach and enter plant roots and how they change the structure of plant cells. This knowledge will help us to increase the productivity of many crop plants and forestry species that benefit from mycorrhizal fungi for nutrient uptake and protection from pathogens. Some of the research projects currently underway in my Root Biology and Mycorrhiza Research Group are described briefly below. Access plan to Leuven About INIBAP The banana, (which encompass a wide range of dessert and cooking varieties, as well plantains), has its wild origins in Asia and the Pacific. From here, the crop has spread throughout the tropical world, carried by traders and other travellers to Africa, South and Central America and the Caribbean. Bananas are now of major global importance in terms of food and income security to millions of smallholder farmers throughout the developing countries of the tropics. In the mid-1980s a destructive fungal disease of banana (black Sigatoka) was seen to be spreading rapidly in Africa and Latin America. It was clear that this disease would have devastating consequences for the millions of smallholder farmers dependent on banana and plantain for their main staple food. It was clear that urgent action was required at the global level and as a result, the International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain (INIBAP) was created. Because of the global nature of banana research, the distinct regional differences and the fragmented nature of ongoing activities, it was decided that the most appropriate strategy was to create a network rather than a research centre. INIBAP was thus created in 1985. To achieve its objectives, INIBAP favours the creation of partnerships and supports research carried out by its partners in both developing and industrialized countries. Many of the producing countries have limited research capacity, but participation in regional networks supported by INIBAP helps them to make the best use of available resources.
