THE THORN BIRDS U.S. Miniseries The miniseries The Thorn Birds, based on Colleen McCullough's 1977 best selling novel, was broadcast on ABC for 10 hours between 27 and 30 March 1983. Set primarily on Drogheda, a fictional sheep station in the Australian outback, the melodrama focused on the multi-generational Cleary family, and spanned the years 1920-1962. At the outset, the familypatriarch Paddy Cleary (Richard Kiley), his wife, Fiona (Jean Simmons), and childrenmoved from New Zealand to Australia to help run Drogheda, owned by Paddy's wealthy sister, Mary Carson (Barbara Stanwyck). Over the years, numerous deaths and disastersfire, a drowning, a goring by a wild boar were to befall the family. Years later, de Bricassart returned to Australia and to Meggie, who eventually left her husband. In the controversial third episode, the two consummated their relationship in what Newsweek 's Harry F. Waters called "the most erotic love scene ever to ignite the home screen," but de Bricassart still was unable to give up the church. Unbeknownst to him, Meggie gave birth to his son (played as an adult by Philip Anglim), who in an ironic twist of fate himself became a priest before dying in a drowning accident. As in McCullough's novel, the key underlying message of this miniseries was that each generation is doomed to repeat the missteps and failures of the previous generation.

For the Birds
Among the fondest and most memorable moments of childhood are the discoveries of songbirds nesting in the backyard. The distinctive, mud-lined nests of robins and their beautiful blue eggs captivate people of all ages. Likewise, the nesting activities of house wrens, cardinals, chickadees, and other common birds can stimulate a lifelong interest in nature. As you learn to enjoy the beauty of birdlife around your home, you may wish to improve the "habitat" in your yard so that more birds will visit your property. You can attract birds by placing bird feeders, nest boxes, and bird baths in your yard, and by planting a variety of trees, shrubs, and flowers. These can provide good nesting sites, winter shelter, places to hide from predators and natural food supplies that are available year-round.
Backyard bird feeding is a convenient way to enjoy wildlife. More than 65 million Americans of all ages watch, feed and landscape for birds.

A pie bird or pie funnel (pie vent) is generally made of pottery, glazed inside and out. Most are 3" to 5" in height with arches at the base to allow steam to enter. The steam is then released through the exit hole at the top. The English pie funnel was as tall as the special baking dish was deep and held the crust even with the dish's rim, thereby lifting the crust above the filling so it would stay crisp and firm. The first deviations from the basic funnels were produced in the mid-1930's to late 1940's such as the Nutbrown Elephant Pie Vent. Shortly thereafter between the 1940's to 1960's, figures of bakers and colorful birds were created for additional visual baking fun. From the 1980's even until now many novelty pie vents have been added to the market for the enjoyment of both the baker and collector. Pie Vents - English Item # Description Price

birds, page 1, Because of this fast blood travel, a bird s body temperature is 7 or 8 degrees higher than a mans. The Mechanics of Flight in birds.
http://wings.avkids.com/Book/Animals/intermediate/birds-01.html
Birds page 1 Introduction From the very start of recorded time we have been watching birds fly. They do such wonderful things: taking off, flying with twists and turns, soaring and diving, and landing again on a small branch. Fossil records show that birds have been flying for millions of years. prehistoric bird Man had to realize that he could not fly just like a bird. We are not made that way. It was not until man developed the internal combustion engine that he could deal with the problem of minimum weight and maximum power.
internal combustion engine Everything about a bird is made for flight. In order to understand the natural flight of birds, we must first look at the structure of a bird. What makes a bird a bird? mallard duck There are common things that all birds have . We must explore the earliest birds and look at the actual mechanics of flying. In this way we can understand how birds take off, fly, and land. What Makes a Bird a Bird? Birds are unique. In the animal kingdom birds have two reasons for being special. First, all birds have feathers. And second, all birds live in a hurry. Everything about a bird is fast. They breathe faster than any other animal. Their heart beats faster, and their body temperature is higher. Birds have a backbone. Birds are warm blooded. This means that their body temperature remains the same even in differing temperatures. Birds lay eggs and defend themselves with a bill or a beak. All birds have wings, but not all birds fly.
