Duck Birds
Ducks belong to the family Anatidae along with swans and geese. There is still no definite agreement on the evolution of ducks and the number of species included. It is believed that tree ducks, also referred to as whistling ducks, make up a separate subfamily. The Tree ducks' physical attributes make one believe that they are more closely related to geese and swans rather than to the so called true ducks. In North America, there are four subfamilies of large ducks. They are dabbling (puddle) ducks, diving (bray) ducks, sea ducks, and stiff-tail ducks. Source:
Alison Fisher
Duck Birds - Appearance
Sexes differ greatly in coloration. As a rule, male ducks have a striking appearance. They are brightly colored. Females, on the contrary, are dull in appearance. The female duck has gray and brown features. Bright coloration is very important for males. It serves as an indication of their physical condition and attracts females during the breeding season. Just the other way around, bright coloration may be lethal for females. It attracts predators during the nesting period and can lead to the damage of the newly hatched ducks. Coloration differences between sexes are most striking in mallards. It is very easy to distinguish a male from a female by the features. However, mallards are not the most brightly colored ducks. Wood ducks are considered one of the most wonderful sights of the duck world. They are a real attraction in the wild.

Pheasant Birds
Pheasant Birds - Origin
There are about 50 species of Pheasants. Practically all of them are native to Central Asia, Ukraine, and China. They have been introduced and widely established in various areas. Romans brought Pheasants into Europe. According to mythology Argonauts took them from the river Phasis in Colchis. Egyptian Pharaohs kept Pheasants; Alexander the Great brought them to Greece from Asia. Some species first came into North America and then to Europe. At present Pheasants are found in a variety of habitats from the snowy Himalayas to the jungles of Indonesia. Pheasant is the state bird of South Dakota.

Pheasant Birds - Importance for Humans
On the topic of Pheasant species - Red Junglefowls - are the ancestors of domestic chickens. Ring-necked Pheasants, due to their delicious flesh, are the most popular game birds. Pheasant hunting is a substantial source of revenue for the private business sector and the government. There exist many farms, raising Pheasants for hunting and for offering special tours. In South Dakota, for example, residents and nonresidents spend more than million annually on hunting Pheasants. General Information

On these pages are the sounds of North American birds (Costa Rican birds have their own page, below) - not just bird calls or bird songs, but all the sounds birds make, such as wing sounds and bill rattles. Since most bird species use different vocalizations for different circumstances, I've tried to tell you what the bird was doing at the time of the recording. It has become even more obvious to me during this project that a bird's vocalizations can be nearly as complex in the information they contain as our own. Individuals of a species sing different songs with different "words" and "phrases" than another individual, and the same species from different territories sing about different things in different ways. One of my ongoing trials is what to call the sounds birds make. They sing, they talk, they whinny and squawk and squeak. They chip and chirp and chack, and the cry and crow and caw. Some ducks quack, some whistle, some peep or screech. Some birds bark or croak or grunt or grumble. Many species, at one time or another mutter and mumble and whisper. I find myself making up onomatopoeic names like "Chack" and "Pipe" and "Chuckerring". Flickers have a "Klear" call, Great Blue Herons "Gronk". If you have a name for some bird's sound, share it with me - some day I'll write a bird call thesaurus! Most files are in Windows WAV format, and all have been edited for file size and clarity. Many have been filtered in ways which do not affect the bird's song, but which may highlight the important parts of the sample. Most samples have been reduced to 8-bit resolution and have been "downsampled" from their original 44.1 Khz to save bandwidth and therefore reduce loading times. More exacting sound collectors are encouraged to contact me for larger, unedited and unfiltered versions of these sounds. MP3 files are now available for many of the longer samples. MPeg 3 (MP3) files are compressed files which will downlaod faster than regular WAV files and play perfectly! Typically MP3 files average 8-10% the size of the same WAV file. If you need a MP3 decoder to play these files

55. Heavy Metals Are Poisonous To Birds
Article by Gillian Willis that describes the toxic effect of heavy metals such as lead, brass and zinc on birds.
http://www.multiscope.com/hotspot/metals.htm
Heavy Metal Poisoning in Birds Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. Both of these metals are potentially toxic to birds. Brass padlocks are probably not a problem for cages of small birds who are unlikely to chew the padlock. However, they should be avoided around larger birds who are able to chew them. Lead is also extremely toxic to birds. Common sources of lead include lead paint, lead fishing weights, curtain weights, lead frames of stained glass windows and tiffany lamps, foil from champagne bottles, lead solder, old pewter, lead batteries and weighted ashtrays and toys. Copper is also potentially toxic to birds although avian toxicity from this metal is less common. Acidic foods stored in copper containers may leach out copper, and occasionally copper piping for water is a potential source of increased copper in the diet if the water is slightly acidic and has been allowed to remain in contact with the piping for some length of time. Allowing the water from the tap to run for a few minutes before filling the water dishes will prevent this problem. Tin (not galvanized)

Are Birds Really Dinosaurs?
Ask your average paleontologist who is familiar with the phylogeny of vertebrates and they will probably tell you that yes, birds (avians) are dinosaurs . Using proper terminology, birds are avian dinosaurs; other dinosaurs are non-avian dinosaurs, and (strange as it may sound) birds are technically considered reptiles . Overly technical? Just semantics? Perhaps, but still good science. In fact, the evidence is overwhelmingly in favor of birds being the descendants of a maniraptoran dinosaur , probably something similar (but not identical) to a small dromaeosaur . What is this evidence? We'll spare you the exhaustive amount of available cladistic studies; those alone would make a large book if compiled. Dr. Jacques Gauthier, during his time as a graduate student of Professor Kevin Padian here at Berkeley, did his dissertation research on this subject, creating the first well accepted, detailed phylogeny of the diapsids . His work provided strong, compelling support for the theory that birds are theropod dinosaurs If we look back into the history of the issue, it is apparent that many comparative anatomists during the 16th through 19th centuries noticed that birds were very similar to traditional reptiles. In 1860, shortly after the publication of

Introduction to the Aves
The Birds
The vertebrate class Aves includes the birds, an extremely distinctive and successful clade, with an estimated 9000 species worldwide, including the snowy owl pictured here. Although descended from the dinosaurs , birds have evolved remarkable specializations for flight: a unique "one-way" breathing system, light yet strong hollow bones, a skeleton in which many bones are fused or lost, powerful flight muscles, and most importantly feathers. Click on the buttons below to learn more about birds. You can navigate deeper into the birds by selecting "Systematics"!
