Audubon's complete seven volume text. Within the text you will see many names in capital letters. This was the convention that Audubon himself used in his text to set off proper names. We have preserved this convention in our text. Due to the inability of the ASCII character set to print Greek letters, the Greek words that Audubon used in his Family and Genus descriptions have been "Latinized": the letters delta-iota-sigma, for example, have become [dis]; the square brackets indicate that the editors have made this change. Is the UK losing its buzz?
That's the question thousands of people will help to answer by counting the number of insects 'splatted' on their car number plates in a ground-breaking new survey.
Bundle of joy - for all concerned!

11. The National Birds Of Prey Centre
Probably the most significant collection of birds of Prey in the world, with around 300 birds of prey and owls. Leading the world in captive breeding, having bred 50 species so far.
http://www.nbpc.co.uk
The National Birds of Prey Centre from the air - 2002 We are open! The National Birds of Prey Centre will be open as normal until the 31 st of October 2004. The plans for next year are still "up in the air" so watch this space for further news. WHAT IS THE NATIONAL BIRDS OF PREY CENTRE? We are one of the oldest, probably the largest and certainly the best known and respected specialist collection of birds of prey in the world. Housing approximately 250 birds of over 85 species, the Centre leads the world in the number of species bred in captivity. To date 60 species have been bred here, with new species laying eggs each year. MISSION STATEMENT
The National Birds of Prey Centre achieves its conservation of birds of prey
through Education, Captive Breeding, Research and Rehabilitation. MIGRATION DELAYED ........................ The planned migration of birds from The National Birds of Prey Centre at Newent in Gloucestershire to South Carolina in the US has been delayed. Following advice from four internationally known veterinarians it has been decided to delay moving the birds from Newent to Charleston SC, because of a mosquito-borne disease called West Nile Virus that is infecting birds in the US. A vaccine is being developed specifically for birds of prey, but is not yet available.

Birds In the Rainforest
Birds are important to the rainforests because of their ability to drop seeds which grow into new plants. Some of the extraordinary birds you would see in a rainforest tour are: a quetzal, toucan, hoatzin, Phillippine eagles, or golden cock-of-the-rock.
Parrots are not the only kinds of birds you will see as you walk through the rainforest. In fact, of the 9,000 species of birds in the world, 2,500 call the rainforest home.
Pictured on the right is a tiny bird called the Hermit Hummingbird. When hummingbirds fly, their wings make a humming sound for which they are named.
Next stop: Most of the monkeys and apes in the world live in the rainforests. Monkeys spend most of their time leaping around the trees of the the rainforests.
Rainforests are also very busy at night when different animals, called nocturnal animals, wake up. Some of the sounds you would hear at night are frogs croaking, monkey hooting, and bats squeaking as they fly.
Many different types of plants can be found in the rainforest. The plants live at different locations in the rainforest depending on their need for light and water.
The place where an animal lives is called its habitat and contains different types of food.

Welcome to Cage Birds!
European Goldfinches courtesy of Daniel Maldonado What is a bird?
Birds are defined as homeothermic (warm-blooded) vertebrates with two pairs of limbs based on a pentadactyl pattern. The front limbs are modified to form wings. The body is covered by feathers except over the legs and feet, where reptilian type scales exist, and over the face which is often ornamental skin. What is a bird? Birds are my companions and my friends. I wake to their songs and their chattering each morning and many days they give me the strength and the reason to get out of bed and carry on with my day. They have taught me about love and bonding and have taught me how to play again. Birds, whether my own companion birds, or the hummingbirds I see outside my window, allow me to communicate with other peopleand make new friends in a way I could not do before.
