LEARNING METHODS FOR DATA EXPLORATION
The group studies statistical models that are useful especially for exploratory data analysis, but also more generally in data mining, information visualization, and probabilistic modeling. The methods have close connections to machine learning, neural computation, and computational statistics. Data exploration is the first, data-driven phase of data analysis. Previously unknown dependencies are sought for in the data. The hypotheses discovered in the first phase are then verified in later stages of analysis. Our current focus is on a new approach to data analysis that we call learning metrics . The developed methods are used particularly in bioinformatics applications, but have also been used for information retrieval, analysis of bankruptcy risk, etc.

    Welcome to the Poxvirus Bioinformatics Resource Center. The Center provides a relational database that supports data storage of poxvirus genomic sequences, and annotation and analysis of poxvirus genes; web-based data mining and sequence analysis tools; software for analysis of complete genomes; a poxvirus literature resource; a repository of poxvirus species and strains (at ATCC); and a discussion forum. The Poxvirus Bioinformatics Resource Center was created by a consortium of laboratories. An Advisory Committee has been established to help guide the development of this Center. Funding for this project is being provided by the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases , and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency .     BIOINFORMATICS
    The completion of a "working draft" of the human genomean important milestone in the Human Genome Projectwas announced in June 2000 at a press conference at the White House and was published in the February 15, 2001 issue of the journal Nature Over the past few decades, major advances in the field of molecular biology, coupled with advances in genomic technologies, have led to an explosive growth in the biological information generated by the scientific community. This deluge of genomic information has, in turn, led to an absolute requirement for computerized databases to store, organize, and index the data and for specialized tools to view and analyze the data.
