Biogeography
Some Researchers consider that Australia is divided into two major regions, a Tropical northern and a Temperate southern region. Other Researchers consider that Australia should be further divided into five major Biogeographic Zones which can be used to describe the distribution of most intertidal animals and algae. The difficulty is that most animals and algae don't read research papers, so they occur around the Australian coast dependent upon the environmental and biological conditions which limit their distribution. So, although many species do confirm to the artificial biogeographic pattern imposed upon them by humans, many do not. Look at the distribution pattern of the various animals and algae in the website and see if they match a biogeographic zone, or not.
In the Tropical Region , the Western Tropical Zone extends from Shark Bay across northern Australia to Cape York in Queensland, and the Eastern Tropical Zone extends from from Cape York down the Queensland coast to Fraser Island.

Historical Biogeography
An Introduction
Jorge V. Crisci, Liliana Katinas, Paula Posadas
Though biogeography may be simply definedthe study of the geographic distributions of organismsthe subject itself is extraordinarily complex, involving a range of scientific disciplines and a bewildering diversity of approaches. For convenience, biogeographers have recognized two research traditions: ecological biogeography and historical biogeography. This book makes sense of the profound revolution that historical biogeography has undergone in the last two decades, and of the resulting confusion over its foundations, basic concepts, methods, and relationships to other disciplines of comparative biology. Using case studies, the authors explain and illustrate the fundamentals and the most frequently used methods of this discipline. They show the reader how to tell when a historical biogeographic approach is called for, how to decide what kind of data to collect, how to choose the best method for the problem at hand, how to perform the necessary calculations, how to choose and apply a computer program, and how to interpret results.

Biogeography
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Biogeography is the science which aims at documenting and understanding spatial patterns of biodiversity Biodiversity or biological diversity is a neologism from bio and diversity. It is the diversity of and in living nature. Diversity, at its heart, implies the number of different kinds of objects, such as species. However, defining biodiversity or measures of biodiversity, is not so simple.
Since 1986 the terms and the concept have achieved widespread use among biologists, environmentalists, political leaders, and concerned citizens world-wide. This use has coincided with the expansion of concern over extinction observed in the last decades of the 20th century.
Click the link for more information. It can be defined as the study of distribution and pattern of variation in numbers and kinds of living organisms.
Biogeography is a synthetic science, related to geography Geography is the study of the locational and spatial variation in both physical and human phenomena on Earth. The word derives from the Greek words gê ("the Earth") and graphein ("to write", as in "to describe").

http://www.ga.lsu.edu/biogeography.html
Biogeography at LSU
Biogeography at LSU is distinguished by its orientation towards Quaternary paleoenvironmental reconstruction and global change studies. During the past 14 years, faculty research and publications have focused on the following areas:
  • Quaternary climate history and biological diversification in the neotropics, especially the Amazon Basin;
  • Postglacial vegetation dynamics of the boreal forest and temperate mixed forest of Canada;
  • Pollen records of Quaternary vegetational changes in China;
  • Reconstructing the Holocene history of hurricane disturbance and vegetational response from lake and marsh sediment records along the U.S. Gulf Coast and Atlantic coast;
  • Pollen studies of tropical and subtropical ice cores in South America and China;
  • Monsoon climate changes and vegetation history of the Tibetan Plateau.
Topics of student research and theses/dissertations, in addition to those directly relating to the above faculty research projects, include, for example: Holocene paleoenvironmental changes in Cambodia; Holocene vegetational history of the Cajun Prairie in southwestern Louisiana; Holocene climate change and human disturbance in the subalpine forests of Fujian in southeastern China; and long-term dynamics of forest fragments in the Atlantic forests of SE Brazil. Most of the faculty and graduate student projects have been supported by research and dissertation grants from the NSF, NOAA, NGS, AAG, GSA, Sigma Xi, and the Risk Prediction Initiative of the Bermuda Biological Station for Research (BBSR-RPI).

Island Biogeography and Evolution: Solving a
Phylogenetic Puzzle With Molecular Genetics
Richard Filson Target age or ability group: 9-12 college prep biology or honors biology. Class time required: Three days: first day, students can work independently, second day students work in teams of four, and the third day should be a small group or class discussion. Materials and equipment: Scissors and glue, an atlas would be a desirable option. Summary of activity: This activity is a logic problem that is based on real organisms and real data. The problem is to develop phylogenies for seven related populations of lizards living on the Canary Islands. Three phylogenetic charts will be constructed, each using different forms of data, geography, geology, morphology, and molecular genetics. Prior knowledge, concepts or vocabulary necessary to complete activity: This activity would be best used near the end of an evolution unit. Knowledge of the DNA code is needed and a basic understanding of biotechnologies such as gel electrophoresis, and DNA finger printing would be desirable. Students must know the difference between a population and a species. Students should be aware of the conditions of speciation including isolation, genetic divergence, and reproductive isolation. Teacher Instructions: The final activity will be to use the results from the pairings and compare the differences and use this information to develop a final phylogeny chart. The solutions are provided. The basic scheme to remember is that low numbers of base-pair differences imply closer evolutionary relationships. The phylogeny charts are intended to stimulate student thinking about the problems of understanding past and future evolution. There are many variations to phylogenies students can come up with, some are better than others. The criteria should really be: Can the solution be logically explained and justified? Only the last phylogeny based on molecular genetics has fewer variations and needs some serious discussion to close the subject. Finally, most questions on this assignment require student explanation. You should emphasize that answers may vary, but logic is required for all solutions.

There are two regions for this general area, the Eastern Warm Temperate region in the north, and the eastern tropical Pacific region in the south.
The actual boundaries of these regions, provinces, and areas depend to some extent on the taxa considered and the investigator describing the area, although the broad patterns of distribution are often similar. The map at left and the regions described are based on the NOAA (1990) data atlas, and are used here as one example of a classification scheme of biogeographic areas.
The Eastern Warm Temperate Region includes two provinces:
The San Diegan Province includes the Pacific Coast of the Baja California peninsula. This province includes two areas:
The Southern Coast area
This area is strongly warm temperate without much coastal upwelling, and the fauna resembles that of the Southern California bight. However, the southernmost of these subareas, from Laguna San Ignacia to Magdalena Bay, has many tropical species as well (Hewit, 1981).
The Baja California upwelling area
This is an area of strong coastal upwelling, with many species more typical of the Central California and Oregon coasts.

Overview Native Plant Conservation Habitat Restoration Rare Species Recovery ... Internships Island biogeography is the study of the distribution and dynamics of species in island environments. Island species are especially vulnerable to extinction because they have a small geographic range. They are limited to the island or a particular part of the island, and they usually have low population numbers.These factors make them more likely to become extinct as a result of natural factors such as disease, fire and normal population fluctuations. The collections displayed in the Tropical Rotunda and Desert House of the Fuqua Conservatory illustrate the unique plant diversity found on the island of Madagascar. Because of its high number of rare and endangered species, Madagascar has been classified by the IUCN as an area of extremely high conservation priority.

  • DEFINITIONS
    biogeography : the study of the geographic location of species. island biogeography : the study of the species composition and SR on islands equilibrium species number : The SR of an island at which immigration balances extinction, and which remains roughly constant. extinction and immigration : These mean slightly different things in community ecology. Extinction is the disappearance of a species in a community. Immigration is the appearance of a species in a community ("speciation" is almost nonexistent in the spatial and temporal scales used by ecologists) Island biogeography theory (IBT) : a theory proposed to account for the equilibrium SR on islands.
    EXAMPLES OF ISLAND BIOGEOGRAPHY
    Simberloff and Wilson 1970:
    Small mangrove islands in the Florida Keys exhibit high arthropod SR on large and near islands, and low SR on small and far islands predicted according to IBT. They then fogged the islands with methyl bromide, and followed arthropod populations. Within several weeks, SR returned approximately to previous levels, implying they had reached equilibrium.
    Diamond 1969:
    Diamond compared 1917 and 1968 bird surveys of the Channel Islands of California, which vary in size and distance from the mainland. There is approximately the same SR in both surveys. However, species composition was different (30% of the species were not shared between the two surveys). This implies that the islands have equilibrium SR, though not species composition.

    Ecology influenced by island growth, subsidence, and isolation
    The Hawaii hot spot is beneath the southern end of the island chain. The Emperor Seamounts, Northwest Hawaiian Islands (Hawaiian Ridge), and the main Hawaiian Islands were built in succession over the hot spot. The northwest motion of the Pacific Plate slowly draws them away from the hot spot. Removed from the source of lava, they cease to erupt and erosion whittles them away until they disappear beneath the sea. The growth and subsidence of the islands as they pass over the hot spot influences the distances between islands, the climate zones and ecosystems available on the islands, and the evolution of the animal and plant species.
    Our research on biogeography of the Hawaiian Islands
    The discussions below are paraphrased from abstracts of papers published by the Submarine Volcanism group.
