Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Biology
An Introduction to the Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Biology
The greatest challenge to face mankind is upon us. We, as humans, have initiated one of the greatest episodes of mass extinction the world has ever seen. Given current estimates of extinction rates, by the year 2020 only 30-70% of all living species on earth will survive. Indeed, if we are to survive, not only is our way of living going to change drastically within our generation, but we also must take control now to better manage our natural resources, decrease current extinction rates, and so conserve a large portion of our biodiversity. We MUST do this immediately. It was to help address these critical issues that the ROM created the Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Biology.
Originally created as a " Centre of Excellence " by the Board of Trustees of the Royal Ontario Museum on February 23, 1995, the Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Biology served to facilitate a cross-disciplinary approach to research programs of Curatorial staff of the six ROM Life Science Departments: Botany; Entomology; Ichthyology & Herpetology; Invertebrate Zoology; Mammalogy; and Ornithology. This relationship was formalized on July 1, 1996, when the Museum restructured it's Curatorial Division to meet the challenges of contemporary society and effectively communicate the results of research carried out by ROM Curators. Nineteen curatorial departments were amalgamated into six, with the new departmental groups reflecting common interests, research, and collections management orientations. Thus, the six former Life Sciences Departments were officially amalgamated to form the Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Biology.

INTRODUCTION Biodiversity refers to the incredible variety of life found in our planet. In the book Biodiversity II
Seahorses: Unique Creatures Threatened by Habitat Loss and Overfishing
Seahorses are small fish that inhabit shallow temperate and tropical waters along coastal ecosystems throughout the world's oceans. They are unique in many ways. Their appearance is so different from that of other fish that people long ago believed they were insects. Instead of what we normally think of as fish, these creatures look like an amalgamam of parts from different species of animals. Their head resembles that of a miniature horse. Their small, delicate fins remind us of fish. They also have long, prehensile tails that seem out of place in a fish. Despite such odd combinations, seahorses are among nature's most beautiful creations. They look like ornaments in their coral reef, seagrass and mangrove habitats. They are also unique because in seahorses it is the male rather than the female who becomes pregnant. Seahorses are also totally monogamous. Unfortunately, seahorses are threatened by habitat loss and overfishing.

    INTRODUCTION
Welcome to this new series of occasional papers on Australia's biodiversity. The series intends, for the first time, to collate and make available information relating to all aspects of the conservation of Australia's biodiversity - why it is globally significant, the conservation status of its components, threatening processes, current levels of knowledge, and the adequacy of conservation measures. In addition the series will also include results from selected projects undertaken on behalf of the Buiodiversity Unit.

Description
NEW JOURNAL FOR 2003
Systematics and Biodiversity is an international life science journal devoted to whole-organism biology, especially systematics and taxonomic biodiversity. It emphasizes the importance and multi-disciplinary significance of systematics. It records the diversity of organisms through descriptive taxonomic papers. The underlying basis of biodiversity is addressed directly and indirectly, through studies of taxonomic relationships, and of growth, form, adaptation and function, and through analysis and synthesis of biodiversity patterns in time and space, especially with respect to environmental and human factors. Coverage also includes relevant theory and methodology, and conservation biology. Draft Terms of Reference for a Report Assessing the Impact of Importing Live Gentoo Penguin ( Pygoscelis papua)
The terms of reference set out below outline the reporting requirements for assessing the potential impact on the environment* of amending the 'List of Specimens Suitable for Live Import' for the purposes of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Act 1999, to include the gentoo penguin ( Pygoscelis papua) For the purposes of the development of a public display focusing on Australia's Sub-Antarctic Territories, Oceanis Australia is proposing to import live Gentoo Penguins into a purpose built climate controlled facility at the Melbourne Aquarium. The facility would include a temperature controlled land and air space as well as a cooled saltwater pool. Public viewing will be from both above and below the water through acrylic panels. The exhibit and husbandry practices will be developed to meet AQIS requirements. Up to 20 Gentoo penguins will be sought for the project from captive-bred sources. Prior to import the penguins will under go such tests as described and approved by AQIS. Each bird will be tagged with an electronic identification microchip.

Biodiversity
The World Bank is the world's largest financier of biodiversity. Over the last decade, World Bank funding for biodiversity has involved over 226 projects with about US$1.0 billion of IBRD/IDA resources, over US$450 million of GEF funds and an additional US$1.2 billion in co-funding from other donors, governments, NGOs, foundations and the private sector - a total Bank-managed biodiversity portfolio of US$2.6 billion.
Since 2000, a rapidly growing number of 'fast track' projects (involving medium-sized GEF grants) has added strength, innovation and diversity to the portfolio, and has enhanced the Bank's ability to engage new partners. Analytical tools and skills allow us to measure the extent of resource use, translate it into economic and social impact terms, and over time monitor the state of environmental resources and the benefits they generate. Methodological toolkits also seek to improve the quality with which biodiversity is dealt with in environmental assessments. All these activities help to inform policy makers and guide those who design and implement development programs and projects.
World Bank support in the area of biodiversity involves the establishment and strengthening of protected areas (including activities in buffer zones), sustainable use of biodiversity outside protected areas, eradication of alien species, and biodiversity conservation through improved management and sustainable use of natural resources in the production landscape. All of these activities have important links to poverty alleviation initiatives. In the future, it is expected that the Bank's activities in support of conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity will further emphasize mainstreaming of biodiversity in the production landscape, including agriculture, fisheries, and other rural development activities.
