Tongass Conservation Society Who Are we? A Program overview TCS is the conservation conscience of Ketchikan, Alaska. In the heart of the Tongass, Ketchikan is also home of a activist timber industry and an anti-environment press. TCS is dedicated to preserving the biodiversity of the many island forests of the Tongass through protection of habitat from the pressures of industrial exploitation. Tourism Industry Threatening to Destroy Itself NEW!!! Comments Due!!!
Misty Fiords Float
Ketchikan is host each summer to 500,000 tourists who arrive on cruiseships looking for a taste of the wilderness. One popular destination is the jewel of Misty Fiords National Monument. Rudyerd Bay. This unique and inspiring fjord features majestic snow-capped peaks whose flanks form the walls of a beautiful canyon in the rainforest. Goats, bears, eagles are frequently seen as you watch waterfalls that tumble from the snowfields. But what you also see and hear are the vast armadas of aircraft buzzing tourists on flightseeing tours. TCS is working to facilitate planning for a tourism industry which responsibly manages its own use and abuse of the wilderness. Read more about Misty and Tourism impacts.

On more than 2600 World Wide Web pages, the Tree of Life provides information about the diversity of organisms on Earth, their history, and characteristics. Each page contains information about one group of organisms (for example, the Coleoptera page gives information about all beetles, the Salticidae page about jumping spiders, the Cephalopoda page about squids, octopi, and related molluscs, and the Fungi page about fungi). Individual Tree of Life pages are linked one to another in the form of the evolutionary tree that connects all organisms, with the pages branching off from a group's page being about subgroups. For example, the links from the page on frogs leads one to pages on individual families of frogs, and eventually up to some individual species of frogs:

The Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) was founded in 2000 by the Faculty of Science as a response to some of the major challenges to modern science. These challenges are to understand man-made as well as natural global change and their impact on biodiversity. A truly integrated approach is required to meet these challenges, covering the full complexity of the interactions between living organisms and their physical and chemical environment
IBED's main fieldwork areas are in Northwest and Southern Europe, Central and South America. IBED is responsible for two interuniversity Research Schools (Biodiversity and ICG) and participates in two other schools (SENSE and Functional Ecology). Contact IBED

California Home CA Biodiversity Council Home What's New E-mail Signup ... Site Map Welcome The California Biodiversity Council (CBC) was formed in 1991 to improve coordination and cooperation between the various resource management and environmental protection organizations at federal, state, and local levels. Strengthening ties between local communities and governments has been a focus of the Council by way of promoting strong local leadership and encouraging comprehensive solutions to regional issues.
The Council was not created to independently establish new projects nor to become another bureaucracy. Rather, its purpose is to discuss, coordinate, and assist in developing strategies and complementary policies for conserving biodiversity. Members exchange information, resolve conflicts, and promote development of regional conservation practices.
The Council has 40 members, including ten regional associations of county supervisors and governments, 16 state agencies, 12 federal agencies, the University of California, and the California Association of Resource Conservation Districts.

69. ETI - World Biodiversity Database
ETI s World biodiversity Database is a continuously growing taxonomic database and information system that aims at documenting all known species.
http://www.eti.uva.nl/Database/WBD.html
The WBD is intended to increase understanding and to support a responsible use and to facilitate the management of the earths biodiversity resources. It is built as a joint effort of specialists worldwide who contribute basic taxonomic, ecologic and biodiversity data to ETI to make this available in electronic form, both online in the WBD and in subsections on CD-ROMs. The WBD contains taxonomic information (hierarchies), species names, synonyms, descriptions, illustrations and literature references when available. A direct link to CMBI provides genetic information on protein sequence (from the PIR database) and nucleic sequence (from the EMBL database) for each taxon. In the future the WBD will be extended with online identification keys and an interactive geographic information system. A part of (sections of) the WBD is available on CD-ROM Those parts of ETI's WBD that represent so called Global Species Databases (full worldwide coverage on specific taxa) are linked to the Species 2000 Index of Species , a virtual basic taxonomic reference system, that is continuously updated by quality taxonomic databases. The Species 2000 Index acts as a basic species name references system that can help you to locate detailed information on species in the member databases. MarClim is a new major four-year multi-partner British and Irish project led by the Marine Biological Association in collaboration with Plymouth Marine Laboratory, The Scottish Association for Marine Science, The University of Plymouth and University College Cork. The aim of MarClim is to assess and forecast the influence of climatic change on marine biodiversity in Britain and Ireland using long term and current data on intertidal rocky shore indicator species. MarClim is currently the only government-funded project addressing climate change in the marine environment in the UK. Our pages detail the activities of our project and provide general information on climate change issues. Click here to explore the MarClim Web site You are visitor number since January 26th 2003

Essay sections: Choose... Why is Madagascar so special? Biographies in biodiversity The human scene Conservation issues Travel and tourism Information sources and contacts Urban areas Rainforest Dry tropical forest Spiny desert Madagascar locations map Madagascar is about as far away as you can get from the United States, both geographically and biologically. The same principles of ecology and evolution apply everywhere, but the different conditions have led to very different results. Likewise, the threats to biodiversity have underlying similarities, but the details are quite different. Much of the original biodiversity still exists in Madagascar, but it may not survive long into the next century. This web site is intended to illuminate the principles of ecology and evolutionary biology and to educate people about threats to biodiversity. We hope that it will inspire you to learn about and protect biodiversity in your country as well as in Madagascar. David R. Parks and the Missouri Botanical Garden
