Foreword
Overview Subject Areas Items Foreword
Biodiversity, described by Edward O. Wilson as 'the totality of the inherited variation of all forms of life across all levels of variation, from ecosystem to species to gene', is under severe attack. Its ecological roots are neglected. Paving and populating, consuming and polluting, human activities are having a great adverse impact on our living nature. Human activities and - more fundamental - underlying structural factors and material processes in our society are causing species to vanish at a rate unequalled since the doomsdays of the dinosaur. The next great extinction will be more fizzle than fireworks. In fact, it is already begun. More is at stake than simply the spice of life. Each species takes its secrets to the grave: potential solutions to coming ecological crises in the biosphere, possible cures to medical mysteries. There's no time to waste. We must protect biodiversity now, for our families, our children, our future!! Our online Encyclopedia of Biodiversity is unusually eclectic, yet organized by a set of easily articulated goals. They are the following: to carry the systematics and biogeography of the world fauna and flora toward completion; map the hot spots where conservation will save the most biodiversity; orient studies of natural history to understand and save threatened species; advance ecosystems studies and biogeography to create the needed principles of community assembly and maintenance; acquire the knowledge of resource use, economics, and polity to advance conservation programs based on sustainability; and enrich the ethic of global conservation in terms persuasive to all.

Without sufficient funding to finance effective management of marine resources, there is a great risk that marine protected areas may become little more than paper parks and that international agreements for managing marine resources may turn out to be little more than statements of good intentions. This guide describes over 30 mechanisms for financing marine conservation, both through raising revenues and providing economic incentives. Included with the descriptions are real examples of how these mechanisms have been implemented around the world. It is intended as a practical guide to familiarize conservation professionals with a menu of options to creatively and sustainably finance marine and coastal conservation. Research paper, 1995. Analyses indigenous and introduced protected area systems in Ghana.

AFRICAN BIODIVERSITY SERIES Produced by the Biodiversity Support Program Number 1, May 1995 Indigenous vs. Introduced Biodiversity Conservation Strategies: The Case of Protected Area Systems in Ghana By Dr. Yaa Ntiamoa-Baidu INTRODUCTION Many countries in Africa have undergone rapid population growth; this, unfortunately, has not been matched with an equally rapid rate of development of appropriate technologies and management of natural resources that cater for the increasing demands on the resources. Concurrently, the traditional strategies for biodiversity conservation that have existed in African communities have gradually eroded. The result is extensive habitat destruction, degradation, and severe depletion of wildlife, with serious consequences for biodiversity conservation on the continent. Biodiversity is defined here as variety of life forms, measured in terms of biomes, ecosystems, species, and genetic varieties and the interactions between them. In the early 1900s, concern over rapid destruction of forests and dwindling wild animal populations in Ghana and other African countries led colonial administrators to introduce protected area systems based on western knowledge and values. Introduced protected area systems in Ghana comprise forest reserves and wildlife conservation areas (national parks, game production reserves, wildlife sanctuaries, and strict nature reserves). Control of these areas is vested in central government. A policy of externally enforced exclusion is pursued and no serious attempts are made to involve the local communities in the management of the protected areas. This situation, naturally, generates antagonism and often results in conflicts between local communities and wildlife/forestry officers.

One of the tenets of Geospatial Solutions (Geospatial-online.com) is "the power of place". Certainly, place is also a fundamentally important component of GBIF data.
