Return to the UK abc Home Page Uploaded Nov 1977 SMALLHOLDER FARMERS', PASTORALISTS' AND ARTISANAL FISHERFOLK'S INTELLECTUAL RIGHTS AND AGRICULTURAL BIODIVERSITY, IN KENYA "There is no such activity as Bioprospecting - there is only Biopiracy" RAFI From: IT Kenya / ITDG CONTENTS: INTRODUCTION THE DEVELOPMENT OF ' FARMERS' RIGHTS PATENTS ... IMPLICATIONS FOR SMALL-SCALE FOOD PRODUCERS IN KENYA INTRODUCTION [Return to Contents] In Kenya, as in most of the rest of the developing world, the indigenous genetic resources of poor communities are being lost, because of the spread of industrial agriculture and the consequent marginalisation of small-scale food production, and they are being stolen by corporate-sponsored scientists and other plant collectors - the Biopirates - without adequate compensation. PRIOR INFORMED CONSENT 'Prior Informed Consent' means that when someone from within or outside of the community wants to use the community's genetic resources, for whatever purpose, they should explain exactly what they are going to use them for, who the ultimate enduser will be, and agree, in a legally-binding way, how any benefits, from the further commercial development of these resources, will be shared with the community. In order for communities to be able to negotiate effectively, make reasonable assessments of the implications of any information they are given and be able to claim adequate compensation for their genetic materials, there needs to be an agreed framework supported by appropriate legislation at national level. Australian Biodiversity
Biodiversity is the variety of all life forms: the different plants, animals and micro-organisms, their genes and the ecosystems of which they are a part. Australia is one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world, with a large portion of its species found nowhere else in the world. We depend on biodiversity for our survival and quality of life. The most significant impediment to the conservation and management of biodiversity is our lack of knowledge about it and the effects of human population and activities on it.
  • Ecosystem processes: biodiversity underpins the processes that make life possible. Healthy ecosystems are necessary for maintaining and regulating: atmospheric quality, climate, fresh water, marine productivity, soil formation, cycling of nutrients and waste disposal. Ethics: no species - and no generation - has the right to sequester Earth's resources solely for its own benefit.

Integrating Environmental and Population Variation: A Model for Biodiversity Studies (AMBIOS)
Areas of study:
  • The relationships between breeding ecology, niche width and biogeographic range, and their bearing on the future dynamics of biodiversity at a time of accelerating environmental change and extinction will be studied.
  • The development of operational concepts for assessing and describing the very basis of biodiversity will be established This will involve evaluating and comparing phenotypic and genotypic features as measures of the buffering capacity of the components of biodiversity with respect to changing environmental factors, and will be achieved by focusing on genetic heterogeneity levels and phenotypic responses in relation to the environment, and on thermal tolerance.
  • The determination of the mechanisms involved in the transition from polymorphic, interbreeding populations to those of species status, and the elucidation of how such changes can be distinguished from phenotypic plasticity, will be addressed.
  • Techniques for the identification of species and 'lower' taxonomic units will be developed, and new molecular methods tested in those species in which the levels of polymorphism are high.

    Center for Conservation and Biodiversity
T he Center for Conservation and Biodiversity was established in 1993 by the Board of Trustees of the University of Connecticut as a cooperative effort between the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, the Connecticut State Museum of Natural History, and the Geological and Natural History Survey of the Connecticut State Department of Environmental Protection. Its mission is to protect the diversity of life through education, training, and research in ecology, evolutionary biology, and systematics - disciplines that are the foundation of sound conservation practice. A primary goal of the Center is to promote research and training in the conservation of biodiversity on the local, national and international scene. Basic scientific research is fostered along with applications to solving sustainable conservation issues. The Center provides financial support for graduate and undergraduate training and research in the fields of conservation, ecology, evolution and systematics. The Center is working with several private foundations and corporations to establish research fellowships for students, to fund an annual research award competition for graduate students, and to provide student travel to conduct research and attend professional meetings. T he Center sponsors a Colloquium in Conservation and Biodiversity that brings distinguished scholars to campus each year. The Edwin Way Teale Nature and Environment Colloquium is highly intradisciplinary in scope inviting economists, geographers, land managers, philosophers, nature writers, sociologists, policymakers, biologists, and, of course, environmental scientists. Lectures are attended by students, faculty, conservation agencies, and lay people.
