Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is the study of the molecular and genetic bases of cellular processes. Our faculty conducts research to increase current knowledge of the biochemical and molecular mechanisms of normal and abnormal cellular processes. Our research, PhD, and graduate programs conducted in the areas of cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry, molecular genetics, structural biology, developmental biology, enzymology, molecular biophysics, molecular endocrinology, chemical biology, and biochemical nutrition, can be applied to a broad group of important and currently relevant health problems such as cancer, aging, neurological diseases, fertility/infertility, and environmentally based diseases. The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health offers three programs: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master of Health Science (MHS), and Master of Science (ScM) . The entire faculty of the department serve as mentors for the PhD program, whereas the Masters programs are offered only through the Division of Reproductive Biology . Graduates go on to careers in academia, biotechnological and pharmaceutical companies, government, or research institutes.

Aims and Scope: Receptors and Channels
publishes papers covering all aspects of original research on receptors and ion channels and the related signalling elements (including G-proteins). These can be at the levels of molecular biology and genetics, biochemistry, physical analysis, molecular modelling, immunochemistry, molecular pharmacology and electrophysiology. The journal accepts investigations at the molecular level on distribution, function, gene mapping, regulation and development. Also within its scope are the molecular study of membrane transporters, drug design in relation to receptors and channels, and the relationships of receptor and channel activity to disease states.

About the Department
Research Activities PhD Studentships Undergraduate Admissions ... Job Vacancies
We aim to provide a stimulating and diverse research and training environment of international standing within which important and exciting areas of modern biology, biotechnology and medicine can be investigated at the atomic, molecular, cellular and organism level. The department pursues these research aims through its high level of external research funding, its investment in excellent new facilities, up-to-date equipment and state-of-the-art technologies, the recruitment of high-calibre staff, maintenance of industrial contacts, and the fostering of close links and collaborations within the extensive UCL and Bloomsbury scientific community. The disciplines of biochemistry and molecular biology have never been more relevant to the furtherance of our fundamental knowledge and ability to exploit biological systems than in this, the 'post-genomic' era. From the structural biology of proteins and enzymes to the mechanism of amphibian limb regeneration; from the regulation of transcription of genes involved in drug metabolism to the uncovering of gene function in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, from understanding the signalling of insulin receptors to the computer analysis of whole genomes sequences, this department provides an exciting venue in which to realise the promise of these important goals.
