Bigfoot The furry man-monster of the North American continent has achieved such legendary status that the term "Bigfoot" is in danger of becoming a generic label applied to any big hairy creature that walks like a man. The following discussion will focus on the "original" Bigfoot, the seven-foot apelike beast sighted in the woods of the Pacific Northwest and in Canada, where it is traditionally known as Sasquatch. Some Bigfoot hunters believe that the creature's earliest history can be found in ancient Native American legends, particularly in the tales of the Witiko, or Wendigo, a giant spirit-beast from the lore of the Algonkian tribe. Others argue that Bigfoot seems to be a 20th century phenomenon, and any earlier documentation of the creature's existence is tenuous at best. If Bigfoot has indeed been known to Native Americans for ages, it's only in the past hundred years that persons of European descent have begun to report seeing him. During the 1900s, the Colonist newspaper in Victoria, British Columbia, ran several stories about people spotting "monkey-men" in remote wooded areas. In the 1920s, British Columbia schoolteacher J. W. Burns wrote extensively in newspaper and magazine articles about reports of giant hairy creatures. Burns's writings were responsible for popularizing the term "Sasquatch," which he identified as a derivation from the language of the Coast Salish Indians. Sasquatch quickly became known among the general public of western Canada, long before tales of such a creature ever found notoriety in the United States.

From one end of Humboldt County to the other, unsuspecting visitors might run into Bigfoot, the legendary ape-man, over and over again. Since the 1930s more than 120 sightings of the giant mountain-dwelling beast or its tracks have been reported in the dense forests of the Klamath-Siskiyou high country, along the Pacific coast of Northern California. The creature's existence has never been confirmed by scientists. Nevertheless, people who say they've seen it give similar descriptions: a hairy ape-like being, 300 to 400 pounds, 7 or 8 feet tall and walking upright. It usually shies away from people, but once in a while it is said to play with oil drums, trucks, construction equipment. Property damage has been reported, but not human injury. Something similar is known in several parts of the world. In Siberia, Bigfoot is called the Yeti or the Abominable Snowman. In British Columbia it's Sasquatch.

Field Guide to the Sasquatch , a handbook by David George Gordon, a marine biologist, describes the typical Sasquatch as "generally reclusive and shy" and suggests that it is omnivorous, much like a bear. Like many Sasquatch reference books, the field guide also suggests that the Sasquatch may have evolved from the Peking Man or some other prehuman anthropod in an evolutionary path that has led to a point somewhere between the orangutan and the human, and that its most likely habitat is the forests of the Pacific Northwest. (Sasquatch sightings have been reported in every state except Hawaii.) But almost every other detail about the creature-whether it is nocturnal or diurnal, passive or aggressive, lives alone or in groups-is disputed by the people who regularly hunt for the Sasquatch. It is usually described as walking upright, covered in hair, (black, brown, tan, white) and standing at a height anywhere from 4 to 8 feet. What is this creature? Man has given it many names throughout time. Bigfoot, sasquatch, skunk ape, yeti, hairy-man, are all terms used to describe these animals. Yet their elusive and mysterious behavior makes them one of the world's greatest mysteries. Some regard these animals as fictional beings while others simply laugh at the concept that such a creature could exist. Yet there are a group of people (like myself) who's interests are captured by these beings and the mystery associated with them. I became interested in the subject of bigfoot about 7 years ago. As I read through books and discussed the subject with other researchers, I noticed an odd assumption made about these animals. The assumption of which I am refering to is the idea that bigfoot/sasquatch inhabit only the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. This is not at all true. In fact, bigfoot like beings have been reportedly seen in every state with the exception of Hawaii. The focus of this web site will be on bigfoot/sasquatch sightings in the state of Minnesota.
