Honey Bee Biology Races of Honey Bees Preparing to Keep Bees Beekeeping Equipment ... Reference Books

Honey bees ( Apis mellifera L.) are one of the most well-known, popular and economically beneficial insects. For thousands of years, man has plundered honey bee colonies to get honey, bee larvae and beeswax. In recent decades, bee plundering has given way to bee management. Now, honey bees are commonly kept in artificial hives throughout the United States, and a large and sophisticated beekeeping industry provides valuable honey, beeswax and pollination services. A large section of the industry, well represented in Georgia, is devoted to mass-producing queens and bees for sale to other beekeepers. Although many people make a living from bees, most beekeepers are hobbyists who have only a few hives and who simply enjoy working with these fascinating insects.
Honey Bee Biology
Honey bees, like ants, termites and some wasps, are social insects. Unlike ants and wasps, bees are vegetarians; their protein comes from pollen and their carbohydrate comes from honey which they make from nectar. Social insects live together in groups, cooperate in foraging tasks and the care of young, and have different types, or "castes," of individuals. There are three castes of honey bees (Figure 1): Workers - Reproductively underdeveloped females that do all the work of the colony. A colony may have 2,000 to 60,000 workers.

The Internet Apiculture and Beekeeping Archive Welcome to the Archive. (Results will be a weekly bee-l log and/or a monthly news article file. You will then need to use your browser to search for your keyword.) Apiculture is very diverse; our fostering of several insect species to pollinate our crops and produce honey, wax, propolis and venom occurs worldwide. The old beekeeping adage: "There are as many ways to keep bees as there are beekeepers" describes this amazing diversity in beekeeping. Logically then, there is no "proper" way to keep bees, no "right" way to manage for honey production, or to rear queensthe best we can do as good beekeepers and as good neighbors is to share our techniques, lore, knowledge and experiences, basing them upon a rigorous foundation in insect biology. To assume though, that this foundation is stable, would be naive. Every year, new research, and new facts about the fascinating lives our eusocial friends the Honey Bees lead, help us to be more successful beekeepers. This archive is a repository for beekeeping information. If you have trouble finding something, or if you want to add something, please do not hesitate to contact Adam Finkelstein by e-mail:

Home Up Observation Hives Cell-plug Queen Rearing ... Links John's Beekeeping Notebook Backyard Beekeeping
Notes on Keeping Bees in Urban and Suburban Neighborhoods Many beekeepers have bee hives in their back yards. Some bees are even kept on city roof-tops. Bees can travel several miles to collect nectar and pollen, so they do not need flowering plants close by. Most suburbs have plenty of flowers, and bees can make a good crop of local honey. City beekeepers must take special care so their bees do not become a nuisance to neighbors, or even appear to be a problem. We all want good neighborly relations! Bee stings are usually neighbors' biggest concern. Usually, beekeepers can care for their bees in ways that allow neighbors to feel safe and comfortable in their yards. The Fence A Fence is important for most backyard beekeepers. A six foot high fence or shrubbery can serve several purposes:
  • Forces the bees flight path above people's heads. Bees normally travel in a straight path to their hive, and a fence raises their flight path up over everyone's head. A fence reduces the chance that a bee will accidentally collide with someone walking nearby. Creates an "out of sight - out of mind" situation. Some people may be overly concerned about bees in the neighborhood. A fence hides most evidence that managed bees are in the neighborhood.

The Beekeeping Shop is established after the completion of the "Beekeeping Training and the Extension Support Project " (BETRESP"-a joint project of HMG/Nepal and the Netherlands development organization) with the initial support of the project and the involvement of the project staff in 1995.
This organization is continuing some of the very important services to the beekeepers by utilizing the manpower whom were trained during the project period. This is a very small organization with minimal overhead expenses and is the only organization in Nepal which is solely involved in the strengthening beekeeping activities in Nepal.
The organization aims to promote and improve the beekeeping situation in Nepal by sharing the experiences and knowledge to manage the local bee in order to produce more honey, upgrading the quality of Nepali honey and increasing its export possibilities which will help to increase the income of the rural farmers and development of the beekeeping industry and beekeepers of Nepal .
The Beekeeping Shop represents Beekeeping and Research Centre and is associated with Beekeeping development and the Environment conservation organization and Beekeeping Workshop, Godawari in providing these services.

The Tai Chi of beekeeping
more than just a look into yourself
Note: standard hive inspection text included below.
I'm writing this for a dear chat friend Mirandaok. She is the only other person I chat with concerning Tai Chi, Yoga, out of body experiences and meditation. But I know that many other people wish to work closer to their bees WITHOUT the need for excessive sting protection. There is more to hive inspection than ripping them apart and looking for a queen, eggs or honey stores. Here it try to make a unique kind of Beekeeper out of you. I like to call it the Tai Chi of Beekeeping. It's more of a metaphysical experience than just simply inspection the hives. I have often done practice inspections using empty hives and frames. Carefully honing the proper way to inspect your hives. Here is my method, practice it until you feel comfortable at it. Then, remove your hood and put on simple safety eye ware. Only go as far as you feel safe with. That is why I suggest you use this method. Or at least something that you feel comfortable with that is similar.
Fair warnings concerning bee stings.
