Bats of Missouri: Information for Homeowners
Robert A. Pierce II

Missouri Department of Conservation Bats are unique and interesting animals. Because of their nocturnal nature and widespread misconceptions about them, they are the subject of myths and folklore that make them one of the most mysterious and misunderstood mammals. The presence of a bat in a house causes more alarm than does any other wildlife species. These fears are unwarranted. Contrary to what you may have heard:

Introduction
The clade Chiroptera includes two extant clades, Megachiroptera (Old World Fruit Bats) and Microchiroptera (echolocating bats). In addition, Chiroptera includes at least four extinct clades that are most closely related to Microchiroptera. There are over nine hundred extant species of bats (Koopman, 1993). Bats vary greatly in size. The smallest bat, Craseonycteris thonglongyai (Microchiroptera), weighs less than 2 g and has a wingspan of 12-13 cm, while the largest bats, those of the genus Pteropus (Megachiroptera), weigh up to 1.5 kg and may have a wing span over 2m (Fenton, 1992). Bats are unique among mammals as they are the only group to have evolved true powered flight. Some other mammals such as "flying" squirrels and "flying" lemurs can glide through the air for long distances, but they are not capable of sustained flight. In contrast, bats can propel themselves with their wings, gaining and loosing altitude and flying for long periods. Bats are nocturnal and usually spend the daylight hours roosting in caves, rock crevices, trees, or manmade structures such as houses and/or bridges. Some bats are solitary, while others are found in colonies that may include over a million individuals.

NOTE: The article below was originally written in 1999.
Pertinent updates are noted within the text of the article when warranted. umans tend to anthropomorphize their relationships with the other species of this planet. Any and all adjectives are attributed to our fellow species what animals do you conjure up when hearing such adjectives as fluffy, cute, edible, spooky, dangerous, gross, loyal, or noble? I would bet, given the audience of this 'zine, many of you adamantly thought, "Snakes. Snakes are fluffy." Yes, a minor challenge to the usual entrenched generalizations, that, and one I believe even speaks of a kind of reverence for the animals themselves. Idiosyncratic adjectives always bring a giddy smile to my face. Nevertheless, I am sure you must know what I am talking about when I speak instead of the typical descriptions people are wont to use. And bats well, poor bats in Western culture, they've often suffered the fate of being dropped usually into those spooky, scary, or dangerous categories. Terrifying or sometimes cutesy sanitized images of them are trotted out at Hallowe'en and in horror movies. Communities frequently worry about them as a health or safety concern, sometimes citing (erroneously, by the way) that most bats are rabid.

    BATS!!
It's getting closer to Halloween, and I decided to do this week's feature article on bats. We've all heard the stories about them attacking people, tangling themselves in a person's hair, sucking blood. Bats are right up there with darkness, death, vampires and other scary things, right? WRONG! The more research I did, the more I realized that these beliefs were misconceptions. Bats are very fascinating creatures and actually very cute. http://www.szgdocent.org/ff/f-batgen.htm
    BATS
Bats are among the most successful mammals:
there are more bats than any other mammal except rodents. But bats probably outnumber even rodents if we counted each individual.
The 900 or so species of bats make up 20% or nearly one-quarter of all living mammal species! In the tropics, there are often more bats than all other kinds of mammals combined. There are about 80 bat species in Southeast Asia. Classification: Bats are from the order Chiroptera which means "hand wing" in Greek. There are two main suborders of bats:
    Megachiroptera or Megabats:
Also known as Flying Foxes (only because they look fox-like; they are NOT foxes!). Found only in the Old World, Megabats eat a narrower range of food (fruits, nectar). They don't rely on echolocation as much to navigate (though some echolocate with tongue clicks). Instead, they have excellent eyesight and smell senses. There is only 1 family of Megabats
Microchiroptera or Microbats: The rest of 16 families are Microbats. Microbats eat a wide range of food: most are carnivores, mostly insects, but they include fruit eaters, and bizarre specialists like the infamous Vampire Bat. All Microbats use sophisticated echolocation rather than vision to navigate and catch their food. So a Microbat usually has small eyes, and weird fleshy growths on its nose to send out ultrasonic pulses and oversized ears to receive the echoes. Microbats are more widely distributed and have a wider range of forms than any other mammal order.

The Mammals of Texas - Online Edition ORDER CHIROPTERA: BATS Chiroptera, "hand wing," alludes to the great elongation of the fingers that support the flying membrane. Among mammals, bats are unique in that they have true powers of flight; other mammals, such as flying squirrels, volplane or glide, always from a higher to a lower elevation. Bats as a group are crepuscular or nocturnal; their eyes are small and inefficient, but their ears are usually well developed. Experiments suggest that the middle and inner ear and high-frequency vocals are highly important in guiding bats in flight and in their aerial feeding activities. Some bats hibernate in winter; others migrate seasonally. Bats are nearly worldwide in distribution. The tropical regions are best suited for them, and there the greatest variety is found. The temperate regions are inhabited by fewer species; no bats have been recorded in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Thirty-two species of bats occur in Texas. In addition to the 32 species of bats living in Texas today, four others are known from fossil skeletal remains. One of these
