Spatial information is often presented in the form of maps that viewers actively explore to learn about an area. People who cannot see cannot share the benefits of such a visual representation, and have traditionally relied on audio descriptions, tactile maps, guidance from others, and even trial and error when learning the layout of a region. On-going assistive technology research has yielded a number of promising techniques to help people who have visual impairments plan daily walks and get directions, but little has been done to promote the same kind of spatial awareness provided by visual maps. The Blind Audio Tactile Mapping System (BATS) project focuses on the latter area of research by helping people without sight access and explore spatial information.

Washington, DC
Tel: 202-682-9400
Fax: 202-682-1331 STATUS: Thirteen species of bat are listed as endangered. DESCRIPTION: Bats are the only mammals capable of true flight. The bat's wing anatomically resembles the human hand, with extremely elongated fingers and a wing membrane stretched between. Almost 1,000 bat species can be found worldwide. In fact, bats make up a quarter of all mammal species on Earth! SIZE: Bats are divided into two suborders: Megachiroptera, meaning large bat, and Microchiroptera, meaning small bat. The largest bats have a 6 foot wing span. The bodies of the smallest bats are no more than an inch long. POPULATION: While some bat populations number in the millions, others are dangerously low or in decline. LIFESPAN: Most bats live longer than most mammals of their size. The longest known lifespan of a bat in the wild is 30 years for a little brown bat. RANGE: Bats can be found almost anywhere in the world except the polar regions and extreme deserts. HABITAT: Bats find shelter in caves, crevices, tree cavities, and buildings.

What is rabies and how do people get it
Rabies is an infectious viral disease that affects the nervous system of humans and other mammals. People get rabies from the bite of an animal with rabies (a rabid animal). Any wild mammal, like a raccoon, skunk, fox, coyote, or bat, can have rabies and transmit it to people. It is also possible, but quite rare, that people may get rabies if infectious material from a rabid animal, such as saliva, gets directly into their eyes, nose, mouth, or a wound. Because rabies is a fatal disease, the goal of public health is, first, to prevent human exposure to rabies by education and, second, to prevent the disease by anti-rabies treatment if exposure occurs. Tens of thousands of people are successfully treated each year after being bitten by an animal that may have rabies. A few people die of rabies each year in the United States, usually because they do not recognize the risk of rabies from the bite of a wild animal and do not seek medical advice.

Our Bat Information
Bats (Order - Chiroptera ) are the only mammals capable of "true" flight. They are nocturnal feeders and locate their prey - small to medium sized insects - by echolocation. Out of the 39 known families world wide, 4 occur in North America. Bats are probably exceeded only by rodents as the most numerous mammals on earth. Return to the top of this page, or back to the home page.
    Habitat
Social bats may roost in caves, buildings, hollow trees, animal burrows, abandoned mines and other protected areas, while solitary bats may live among leaves or under the bark of trees, rock crevices and other suitable spaces. In winter some bat species migrate to warmer climates up to 1000 miles away to feed; others hibernate in the regions of their summer roosts. There are three general types of bat gathering places: day roosts, night roosts and hibernacula. Maturnity roost comprised of only females, may be found in; i.e. buildings or mine shafts with temperatures up to 40 degrees celsius and a high percentage of humidity to ensure rapid growth in the young. Female bats give birth to only one or two young annually and roost in small or large numbers. Males may live singly or in small groups but scientists are still unsure of the whereabouts of most males in summer.

Lots More Information Shop or Compare Prices Bats really stand out in the animal world. They are the only mammals that can fly, and they live much of their lives hanging upside down. Most species are only active at night, dusk and dawn, spending their days in dark caves. Many bats have developed adaptations that let them find their way (and their prey) in complete darkness. Bats are also well-known for sucking blood, though in actuality, there are only a few specific species that feed this way. Seminole bats live mostly in the woods, where they hunt flies, beetles and crickets, among other insects.

The Review Site for People Who Hate the Ratings Game
OK... So we decided to start a web page for people who totally hate the ratings game. By that we mean that you pick up a regular gaming mag at any game store or supermarket and upon reading their ratings you realize that you have a new game that you LOVE, but its not mentioned in the mag at all. Well, this is where you can voice your opinion. And we dont play with stupid numbers. We want to hear the good and the bad, however we will filter out all submissions with poor reasoning. Like my personal favorite, the I-Hate-This-Game-Because-The-Graphics-Don't-Look-Like-Real-Life crap that you always find on review sites. Now let's meet the crew. is is (21), she likes Simulators, Adventure, RPGs, Puzzle, Platformers, Arcade, and mindless little kid games. is (11), he likes anything except non-extreme sports games. He's a very well-rounded reviewing agent. And this is (13), our correspondant Badger.
