The Making of "VAMPIRE": a film for BBC's Wildlife On One by Adrian Warren..page 1 of 6 Main Article Page [page 1] page 2 page 3 ... next page The Making of "VAMPIRE": a film for BBC's Wildlife On One, 1979 by Adrian Warren Desmodus feeding on a donkey It is curious that the vampire myth, even today, continues to hold public imagination. Count Dracula has appeared in over two hundred films from at least ten countries, as well as in plays, books, comics and on television. Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula" has never been out of print, and commercial merchandising includes package holidays to Dracula's castle in Rumania led by an "occult"guide. The story source for Stoker's novel was said to be Vlad Dracul, a 15th century ruler of the Transylvanian province of Wallachia. He apparently had over 23,000 people impaled on wooden stakes, and used to eat his meals while watching their agony. He was a sadist, and a mass murderer, yes, but no vampire. There was a vampire woman, however: an Austrian Countess - Elizabeth Bathony, a society beauty of the Imperial Court. As her looks faded with age, she imagined that the blood of young girls might keep her youthful and, over a period of 15 years, murdered some 600 of them in torture chambers of remote Carpathian castles, draining them of their blood for the sake of her vanity. Her accomplices were sent to the stake in 1611 but because of her high birth she was walled up in her chambers with a hole for air and food. She died three years later.

This web page will be used to list all bats that have been submitted to the University at Massachusetts at Lowell Baseball Research Center ( UMLBRC ) for NCAA certification and have passed. All bats are tested per the NCAA Baseball Bat Certification Protocol. Table 1. summarizes the bats which have been submitted and run through the certification process and passed as of 10 May 2004
Limited Information
The UMLBRC has received numerous requests for specific batted-ball speeds. The UMLBRC is not at liberty to share such information. The only information that can be shared with parties outside the NCAA, respective bat company and the UMLBRC is that the bat PASSED the certification test. This web site will not get involved with the potential promoting of one bat over another based on lab-testing performances. Likewise, the bat companies are not suppose to be divulging any specifics on the test results. Table 1. Summary of BESR Bat Certifications

Holy Bat Box Batman!
it's The Buzbee Bat House Temperature Plot !
Do I have too much time on my hands or what ? I didn't think so, but how then do I explain this ? It began one evening in Egypt several years ago. I was crossing the Nile on a small sailboat and was fascinated by the sight of bats skimming the surface of the river, snatching up the insects . Upon returning home to Denver, I thought it might be interesting to put up a bat house to see if I could attract any bats. After a couple of months of trying to convince my wife , she relented ( and actually bought me a book on bats ). So my Son and I built and erected the bat house. Now after two years of waiting, ( much to my wife's relief and my daughter 's dismay ) no bats. So I read up on the known habits of bats and made a few changes. I moved the house a bit, and caulked and painted it. It turns out that one of the most important factors for a bat when selecting a place to roost, is the temperature. So I decided to see what was happening inside, and share this important information with the world. Thus this page. The most current temperature is on the right and is sampled every half hour. The image represents a span of approximately 5 days.

28. Bats
Review of the film
http://www.haro-online.com/movies/bats.html
Bats It seems that a monster-type movie has to be released every couple of months. The plot is simple. There are a group of people, some of whom do not get along. There is some sort of monster. Be it a large alligator in Lake Placid , genetically altered sharks in Deep Blue Sea , or the multitude of other examples present, Hollywood keeps pumping these movies out at a furious rate. Sometime, as in The Relic or Mimic (if you can remember the difference), the movie rises, albeit only a little, above the genre and becomes somewhat enjoyable. More often than not, the movie is a silly exercise you sit through and forget. Bats falls squarely into the latter category. The monsters this time are, surprise, bats. Not just normal bats, but ones from Indonesia, about the size of foxes. Because of some shady experiments performed on them, they are now super smart and bloodthirsty. Bats may be the most misunderstood animals in the United States, although as consumers of enormous numbers of insects, they rank among the most beneficial. Almost all United States bats, and 70 percent of the bat species worldwide, feed almost exclusively on insects and are thus extremely beneficial. In fact, bats are the only major predators of night-flying insects. One bat can eat between 600 and 1,000 mosquitoes and other insect pests in just one hour (Organization for Bat Conservation) While most United States bat species are insectivorous, bats in other parts of the world feed on a variety of items in addition to insects. Many species feed primarily on fruit, while several types feed on nectar and pollen. Fruit bats perform an extremely important function as seed dispersers. Links and Information Regarding the Conservation of Bats. "In the end, we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we understand, we will understand only what we are taught." Baba Dieum Why should we try to protect bats from extinction? 1.) More than 50% of American bat species are in severe decline or already listed as endangered. Losses are occurring at alarming rates worldwide. 2.) Bats decrease the destructive insect population by eating mosquitos, beetles, moths, grasshoppers, locusts, etc. Without insect-eating bats, farmers throughout the world would have to use more chemicals to save their crops from damage caused by insects. Bats are the only major predator of nocturnal flying insects. 3.) Nectar and pollin eating bats are the only source of pollination and reproduction for many night blooming flowers 4.) Fruit eating bats can disperse thousands of seeds a night throughout the forest floor. There are more than 300 plant species that rely on the pollinating and seed dispersal services of bats. Some of these plants include bananas, mangoes, avocados and cashews. 5.) Bat droppings (guano) is one of the best natural fertilizers available to man. In addition, scientists believe the bacteria found in this guano may be useful in cleaning lakes and streams of industrial pollution.

Bats are flying mammals that navigate by sound (echolocation). They emit sounds which bounce back as echoes. An echo can tell a bat where an insect or any other object is located. Beneficial Bats
  • Bats are important predators of night-flying insects. Many tropical bats pollinate plants and help spread seeds. Bat droppings, or guano, can be used as fertilizer.

Anatomy of a Bat
True or False? Bats are blind. Bats get into your hair. All bats have rabies. Go to Answers Answers to True or False: All are False. And, all are some of the greatest myths about bats. Most bats can see well, but rely more on sound than sight. Because a bat can find something as small as a tiny insect, it can certainly detect something as large as your hair and avoid it. Like all mammals, bats can get rabies, but only a few do. Unlike many other mammals, bats with rabies seldom become aggressive. Detailed description of the order and its families and genera from Walker's Mammals of the World by Ronald Nowak.
    http://www.press.jhu.edu/books/walker/chiroptera/chiroptera.html
    Order Chiroptera
    Bats
Bats inhabit most of the temperate and tropical regions of both hemispheres but are absent from certain remote, oceanic islands. They are not found in the colder parts of either hemisphere beyond the limit of tree growth. Among mammals, only the rodents exceed bats in number of species.
The order Chiroptera is divided into two suborders: the Megachiroptera for the single family Pteropodidae, and the Microchiroptera, which includes all the other families. Unfortunately, these terms are somewhat misleading, as some of the Megachiroptera are smaller than some of the Microchiroptera. Studies of brain morphology led Pettigrew 1987) to suggest that the Megachiroptera are actually descendants of an early branch of the order Primates, and thus that bats and the power of flight developed twice in the course of mammalian evolution. This hypothesis, however, was not supported by analysis of mitochondrial DNA ( Bennett et al.
The order (including the Megachiroptera) is divided here into 18 families, 186 genera, and 986 species. The sequence of families and genera presented largely follows the arrangement of Koopman b ), who recognized 4 superfamilies within the Microchiroptera: Emballonuroidea, with the families Emballonuridae, Craseonycteridae, and Rhinopomatidae; Rhinolophoidea, with Nycteridae, Megadermatidae, and Rhinolophidae; Phyllostomoidea, with Mormoopidae, Noctilionidae, and Phyllostomidae; and Vespertilionoidea, with Thyropteridae, Myzopodidae, Furipteridae, Natalidae, Mystacinidae, Molossidae, and Vespertilionidae. There are some modifications in the sequence of vespertilionoid families given here, the Hipposideridae are here regarded as a family distinct from the Rhinolophidae, and the Mystacinidae have been transferred to the Phyllostomoidea.
