One of the most amazing sights in Austin takes place every evening from March to early November, when 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from their roosts under the Congress Avenue Bridge. Here's all you need to know to experience this incredible - and free - natural spectacle:
Due to the generous support of the Austin American-Statesman , Bat Conservation International (BCI) has been given an ideal platform from which to inform visitors about the beneficial role bats play in local ecosystem. As our chief Congress Bridge partner, the Austin American-Statesman has augmented its role of providing daily news to helping BCI educate people about bats. The Congress Avenue Bridge is in Downtown Austin, just 10 blocks south of the State Capitol building. The bridge spans Town Lake at the cross streets of Cesar Chavez to the north and Barton Springs Road on the south. The Austin American-Statesman's Bat Observation Center is on the southeast side. If you're driving in from out of Austin click here for more directions
Map via Mapquest Parking: Austin American-Statesman's west parking lot at 305 South Congress Avenue. Limited parking is available. Parking is free after 6 p.m. Extra parking is available at the Texas Dept. of Transportation offices, located around the corner off Riverside Drive. Buses may drop off visitors and then will need to find parking off-site as the parking lot composition will not allow for the weight of buses.

Bats After skimming this site, your knowledge on bats will put you in the top 1/10th percent of the world's population. Won't you be clever? Natural History Bats and Motherhood Conservation Bats Worldwide ... Last Words NATURAL HISTORY Most bats are devoted mates and can barely stand separation from one another. Of course with almost one thousand species existing worldwide, as with human preferences, bats' mating behavior run the gamut of possibilities. When bats migrate, they climb to more than 10,000 feet to cruise. Of the 155 species of mammals in Belize, 85 of them are bats, an amazing 55%. Bats are the only true flying mammal and are unquestioned champions of aeronautics. Bats are our own distant relative. The bones of a bat's wings are essentially the same design as those in human arms and hands, having a thumb and four fingers. The brains of flying foxes have more in common with primates than they do with rodents. Bats can hibernate at will. If there is a food shortage due to weather changes, bats can shut down their metabolism and sleep until better times. When a hibernating bat is disturbed, its body temperature rises in preparation for escape and thereby costs from 10 to 30 days of stored fat reserve. Where bats hang isn't random. Each has has own berth on the wall and they roost near a cave entrance or on a particularly warm pocket of the ceiling. They are extremely loyal to their caves of birth and hibernation. To them it is nothing less than "Home Sweet Home."

Bats
A Film Review by James Berardinelli
United States, 1999
U.S. Release Date:
10/22/99 (wide)
Running Length:
MPAA Classification:
PG-13 (profanity, violence, lots of bats)
Theatrical Aspect Ratio: Cast: Lou Diamond Phillips, Dina Meyer, Leon, Carlos Jacott, Bob Gunton
Director: Louis Morneau
Producers: Bradley Jenkel
Screenplay: John Logan
Cinematography: George Mooradian
Music: Graeme Revell U.S. Distributor: Destination Films Bats. Rats. Snakes. Spiders. Other insects that creep and crawl. All of these things strike a chord of primal fear in the human heart, but what works at generating terror and revulsion in real life doesn't always translate well to the screen. Bats is not the first motion picture to exploit this psychological weakness, nor will it be the last, but it is one of the least successful. About the only thing the movie has going for it is the release date: a certain percentage of the population, craving a theatrical Halloween movie, will probably see the film out of sheer desperation. And the PG-13 rating helps to widen the potential audience. (Then again, who really wants to see a PG-13 horror flick?) But, when it comes to generating scares, Bats comes up short. Without any vampires, there's a lack of material for fans to sink their teeth into.
