Announcement: Fourth Halliday Lecture Extrasolar Planets and the Prospects for Life in the Universe
Geoff Marcy (University of California, Berkeley)
Wednesday, May 19 at 8:00PM in Classroom Unit 2 Click here for more information. This lecture is presented by the UCSC Astronomy and Astrophysics Department and UCO/Lick Observatory as part of the Halliday Lecture Series, made possible by a private gift to UCSC by John Halliday to promote public awareness and appreciation for astronomy and astrophysics.
UCSC is one of the world's leading centers for both observational and theoretical research in astronomy and astrophysics. The department includes twenty-two faculty members, whose research interests range from the Solar System and the Milky Way to the most distant galaxies in the Universe and the most fundamental questions of cosmology. There are typically over a dozen postdoctoral researchers in residence, as well as a dedicated and skilled technical staff and a steady stream of visiting scientists. The UCSC department was recently ranked first in the country in research impact, based on citation studies.

M. Narain, B.L. Roberts, J. Rohlf, J. Stone, L. Sulak, J.S. Whitaker Experimentalists in high-energy physics are probing at the smallest scales of length to learn about the fundamental nature of elementary particles and the interactions between them. In addition they are performing precision tests of the standard model and searching for new physics beyond it. The goal of experimental astrophysics is to determine the nature of the universe through observations of radiation reaching the Earth from space. For further links to our research efforts, see:

Dale A. Ostlie and Bradley W. Carroll
Addison-Wesley Publishing Company

832 pp., ISBN 0-201-59880-9 These texts are intended to provide juniors and seniors with a comprehensive, up-to-date introduction to the broad discipline of astrophysics, while making extensive use of the fundamental physical ideas introduced in a standard freshman-level calculus-based university physics course. An Introduction to Modern Astrophysics is appropriate for a year-long course, offering a complete overview of all of astrophysics, including observational astronomy, stellar structure and evolution, the solar system, galactic structure and evolution, and cosmology. An Introduction to Modern Stellar Astrophysics is intended for a semester-long course in stellar astrophysics, and is an abbreviated version of the other text. Both texts contain an extensive collection of problems (over 500 in Modern Astrophysics ), including many that focus on the importance of computer modeling in astrophysics.

Aims: Characterising planetary systems orbiting nearby stars Searching for signs of life on any Earth-like planets found Performing general astrophysics The European Space Agency has selected the "InfraRed Space Interferometer - Darwin" as a mission for its Horizons 2000 programme. Selection of a launch date, probably at or after 2015, will be made on cost, science and technology grounds sometime before then. These pages give some information on this project, and thus are supplementry to the official ESA Darwin website.
