Astrobiology brings together research scientists from around the world to advance our understanding of life's origin, evolution, distribution, and destiny in the universe. Published in print and online. This international journal provides a forum for those scientists who define the future of astrobiology. Its purview includes meteoritics, cosmochemistry, gravitational biology, planetary geology and habitability, exobiology, microbial paleobiology, ecogeology, origins of life, bioastronomy, and life detection and space exploration technology. Relevant papers from microbial ecology, genomics, computational biology, and proteomics are included. The journal contains original research papers and reviews. Indexed in

Is there life elsewhere in the universe? What is life's future on Earth and beyond? How did life originate on the Earth? These are just a small sampling of questions asked by Astrobiologists. TERC and NASA are developing an interdisciplinary year-long course for middle and high school students using astrobiology as its unifying, underlying structure. Through a series of inquiry-based activities centered on the search for life on other planets, students will explore diverse concepts in chemistry, biology, physics, Earth and space science, and engineering. Astrobiology provides students opportunities to master fundamental science concepts in a relevant context and apply their skill and understanding directly in a variety of investigative modes. The curriculum will be available spring of 2004. This project is funded by the National Science Foundation . Opinions expressed are those of the authors and not necessarily those of the Foundation. Additional funding provided by the NASA Astrobiology Program, based at NASA Ames Research Center.

    Introduction
Astrobiology and the Roadmap This NASA Astrobiology Roadmap outlines these multiple pathways for research and exploration and indicates how they might be prioritized and coordinated. The roadmap embodies the efforts of more than 200 scientists and technologists, including NASA employees, academic scientists whose research is partially funded by NASA grants, and many members of the broader community who have no formal association with NASA. Fundamental Questions Astrobiology addresses three basic questions that have been asked in various ways for generations.
    • How does life begin and evolve?
Does life exist elsewhere in the universe?
What is the future of life on Earth and beyond?
Principles The following basic principles are fundamental to the astrobiology program:
    • Astrobiology is multidisciplinary in its content and interdisciplinary in its execution. Its success depends critically upon the close coordination of diverse scientific disciplines and programs, including space missions.

Wecome to the Cardiff Centre for Astrobiology (CCAB) website.
Astrobiology has emerged as a new science for the new millennium. It seeks to understand life in the context of the wider cosmos. The new Centre will continue in the pioneering traditions of astrobiology started in Cardiff over 25 years ago, taking note of the many relevant discoveries that have been made in recent years. The Centre aims to combine the expertise of astronomers, biochemists and microbiologists to generate cutting edge science that would eventually enable us to answer the age-old question: where did we come from?

Director of the Australian Centre for Astrobiology, Professor Malcolm Walter, has been elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. The Fellowship recognises a career that has 'significantly advanced, and continues to advance, the world's scientific knowledge.' Prof Walter is honoured for his work in the early evolution of life and the earth, petroleum and mineral resources of ancient sedimentary basins, conservation of unique modern sedimentary environments and the exploration for fossil life on Mars. The Academy consists of around 350 top Australian scientists who have distinguished careers in the physical and biological sciences. Fellows are selected by their peers for 'an exceptional contribution to knowledge in their field'. Normally 16 new Fellows are chosen each year, but this year it was increased to 20 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Academy. There are around 90,000 Australian scientists, which means only around one in 250 is honoured in this way. The Australian Centre for Astrobiology now has three Fellows - Prof Walter, Professor John Veevers and Professor Roger Summons, and a fourth, Prof. Ross Taylor, is Chairman of our Advisory Board.
