Fundamental Morphology
Classification Ecology Stratigraphy The arthropods are a very diverse and successful phylum. They constitute 75% of
all known present day species, numbering close to one million (Lehmann, 1983). Some are highly specialized and therefore lead specialized ways of life. Common living representatives of the Arthropoda include insects, crabs, shrimp, ticks, scorpions, barnacles, lobsters, centipedes, and millipedes. Many of these are sought-after food sources, such as shrimp, lobsters, and crabs. Others also serve as major links in the food chain (Robison, 1987). Fundamental Morphology External Parts The exoskeleton of arthropods serves the purpose of forming an armor against enemies, a protection against dessication, and a framework for support of the softer parts and for musculature attachment (Moore, 1959). The cuticle is composed of three layers. The innermost layer is flexible and composed of chitin; it is called the endocuticle. The exocuticle is a rigid intermediate layer which is high in protein. The thin external layer, the epicuticle, contains a waxy material. The epicuticle serves to prevent transmission of water and other substances. The exoskeleton is made of sclerites separated by membranes that form the articulating joints (Robison, 1987). The arthropodan body is divided into numerous segments, also called somites or metameres, that are primarily alike (Moore, 1959). These segments are grouped into specialized divisions called tagmata. The segments of a tagmata may either be fused or moveable. Tagmata divisions do vary some between the superclasses. For example, in trilobites the tagmata are the cephalon, thorax, and pygidium; the head, body, and tail, respectively. However, the same tagmata divisions of head, body, and tail in a hexapod are head, thorax, and abdomen (Robison, 1987).

Home Index ][Chapter 1][ Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 CHAPTER 1 The phylum Arthropoda (Hickman et al 1993, chaps 20, 21 and 22) You are required to know the following: (1) the position of this phylum in the animal kingdom and its biological contributions
(2) the classification of this phylum and the more important characteristics of its taxa
(3) the form and functional morphology of the arthropods
(4) their phylogeny and adaptive radiation
(5) ecological aspects of importance, especially the biology and life cycles of the economically important arthropods 1.1 INTRODUCTION
The phylum Arthropoda (arthron = joint, + pous = foot) is the largest phylum in the animal kingdom, comprising about 75 percent of all known species. About 900 000 species of arthropods have been recorded and many more remain to be described. This group includes the spiders, scorpions, ticks, mites, crustaceans, millipedes, centipedes and insects. There is also a very rich fossil record of arthropods. Arthropods are exceptionally successful, as is evident from their great diversity and wide ecological distribution. They are found in environments of every kind, where they often compete on a vast scale with humans for food and spread serious diseases. Some are most beneficial, one of their functions being the pollination of food plants. In addition to being a source of food, they provide drugs and dyes and yield products such as silk, honey and beeswax. The arthropods are especially important in maintaining the natural balance of arthropod populations and many are parasitic or hyperparasitic on other arthropods (mainly insects). The majority of arthropods are herbivorous and many are serious pests of cultivated crops. You must be able to discuss the ecological importance of this phylum.
