I am no expert but i do know that animals come to a food source. They like the grubs in your lawn. Check into killing the grubs and see if that critter will leave your yard for another.
RE: armadillos
Get one of those be-kind-to-animals traps. Use grubs as bait. You can usually find a lot of grubs in horse manure that has accumualted in a barn or in a compost pit. Or, over a weekend, wait until dark and use a flashlight and shotgun. Recipe for Possum on the Half-shell. Remove the meat from the shell, bake at 375* for 30 minutes per pound with chopped onions, salt, favorite herbs and pepper. WHen beautifully brown, throw it outside for the neighborhood dogs to eat. Good Luck.

Dasypus novemcinctus
Earthwatch teams working with Drs. Jim Loughry and Colleen McDonough (both of Valdosta State University, Georgia ) have found an apparent decrease in armadillo numbers here in the past two years. Their pioneering research at Tall Timbers Research Station, the first long-term field study of armadillo population biology, could unravel the roles of drought, forest management practices, and disease that contribute to armadillo population dynamics. You can help them explore the population structure, spatial distribution, and behavior of these enigmatic animals in majestic pine forests and lush hardwood hammocks.

You will share rooms and cooking chores in dormitory-style houses, eating your largest meal in the early afternoon, before leaving for the field. http://www.nsis.org/wildlife/mamm/armadillo.html
Armadillos Armadillos ( Dasypodidae ) are the only mammals in Florida with an exoskeleton. The Nine-banded Armadillo Dasypus novemcinctus , introduced to Florida in the early 1900's, is found statewide in areas with dense ground cover and sandy soil. It is covered with stiff, bony plates. Nine bands of plates cover the body from shoulder to hip and 12 bands cover the long tail. It has a small, tapered head and snout and a long tongue. Its ears are long and hairless. It has sparse white hairs on its belly. It is primarily nocturnal, sedentary, solitary, and a burrower. It digs a series of dens. The multiple entrances are usually protected by stumps, palmettos, or trees. Many other animals also use armadillo dens. Its diet is composed of insects, especially beetles, and other invertebrates plus some plant foods such as cedars and beautyberries Armadillos breed in July or August. Each litter is composed of identical quadruplets, the result of a single egg splitting. All are either male or female. Litters are usually born in March or April. The young begin following the mother the day they are born. When pursued, an armadillo can dig a burrow and disappear in just a few seconds. The nine-banded armadillo cannot roll into a ball to protect itself but a South American armadillo can.

Edentates (Xenarthrans)
Please choose an animal from the list below:
Order Xenarthra (a.k.a Edentata) Xenarthrans, also known as edentates, comprise a small group of some of the more unusual mammals. They are, for the most part, insectivores and herbivores, and are either terrestrial or arboreal in nature. They are found in the warmer climates of South America and North America, being found in Mexico and southern US in North America. Edentates usually lack incisors or canines, and of those that have them their molars lack enamel. Their teeth are held in by a single root each. Edentates have small brains. Anatomically, they have between 5-9 cervical vertebrae, whereas most other mammals have 7. Today, there are 29 species in 4 families; according to the fossil record there were at one time 12 families comprised of animals such as glyptodonts and giant ground sloths. The present-day families are: Dasypodidae (armadillos) 20 spp
Myrmecophagidae (anteaters) 4 spp
Bradypodidae (3-toed sloths) 3 spp
Megalonychidae (2-toed sloths) 2 spp Back Home

Much of the mixed hardwood forest has given up and turned brown. It has been very hot and dry for months. If this is part of the climate change, i will be sad. But the other part of me, the survivor, looks around to see just what plants are enjoying the dry, desert-like climate. One of the disastrous effects of the heat has been the invasion of the garden by the armadillo. I spotted the first armadillo in my first year here at Elixir Farm. We thought it was rare and wonderfully strange. It is not so much fun anymore. As the dryness spread across the hills and finally down into the river bottoms, the armadillo began to look for some food sources and discovered the soft and irrigated terraces where we grow the medicinal plants. At first, say three years ago, there were small holes in the grass and a bit of churning along the sawdust paths. The dog chased them, but never caught any and soon got bored with its lack of success. Then followed a couple of mild winters and boom! A population explosion. Each mother armadillo has four same sex babies with each birth cycle. The stream of 'dillos became unending, unceasing, relentless. We started exterminating, as rare seedlings were tossed night after night. Truly, this was a full-scale assault on the worm population so lovingly tending for years.

FLORIDA ARMADILLOS
An Earthwatch Research Project
Hi, I’m Bob Stringer, a Seventh Grade Science Teacher at the Kickemuit Middle School in Warren, RI. I am participating in a “Teachers in the Field” research project from May 15, 2002 through May 22, 2002. Earthwatch Institute funds the project with a grant from the Rhode Island Foundation. Armadillos are vertebrate, placental mammals that belong to the order Endentata along with many kinds of anteater. They are nocturnal and primarily eat ants, termites, beetles and other insects. They are from 66-100 cm in length and can weigh up to 6kg. The research on the 9 banded armadillo Dasypus novemcinctus They are both Biology Professors at Valdosta State University in GA. They are among very few researchers (only about 20) in the world doing research on armadillos. Due to the small number of researchers, not much is known about these animals in fact no one even knows their lifespan in the wild. Dr. Loughry and Dr. McDonough are trying to find out why female D. novemcinctus
