In the very middle of those times was a Stickly- Prickly Hedgehog, and he lived on the banks of the turbid Amazon, eating shelly snails and things. And he had a friend, a Slow- Solid Tortoise, who lived on the banks of the turbid Amazon, eating green lettuces and things. And so that was all right, Best Beloved. Do you see? But also, and at the same time, in those High and Far-Off Times, there was a Painted Jaguar, and he lived on the banks of the turbid Amazon too; and he ate everything that he could catch. When he could not catch deer or monkeys he would eat frogs and beetles; and when he could not catch frogs and beetles he went to his Mother Jaguar, and she told him how to eat hedgehogs and tortoises. She said to him ever so many times, graciously waving her tail, 'My son, when you find a Hedgehog you must drop him into the water and then he will uncoil, and when you catch a Tortoise you must scoop him out of his shell with your paw.' And so that was all right, Best Beloved. One beautiful night on the banks of the turbid Amazon, Painted Jaguar found Stickly-Prickly Hedgehog and Slow-Solid Tortoise sitting under the trunk of a fallen tree. They could not run away, and so Stickly-Prickly curled himself up into a ball, because he was a Hedgehog, and Slow-Solid Tortoise drew in his head and feet into his shell as far as they would go, because he was a Tortoise; and so that was all right, Best Beloved. Do you see?

Their average size is about 75 centimetres (30 inches) total length including tail. It is a placental mammal of the order Xenarthra , related to the anteater . There are several species of armadillo, distinguished by how many bands are visible on their armor. All species of armadillos are native to the American continents, where they inhabit a variety of environments. In the United States , armadillos are most common in the warmer states, particularly Texas Armadillos eat mostly insects, grubs, and other invertebrates. The armadillo is a prolific digger, and uses its sharp claws to burrow both to feed on grubs and to dig dens.

Nine-banded Armadillo Dasypus novemcinctus
Shannon Moore The armadillo is a curious-looking creature, its twelve-pound body almost entirely covered with jointed, armor-like plates. Armadillos range in color from brownish-black to gray. Native to Central and South America, the nine-banded armadillo first appeared in Texas in the late 19th century. Today, the armadillo's range includes Texas and the southeastern United States. Armadillos are often visible while foraging during the summer months, or as the unfortunate victims of "roadkill" along highways and busy streets. Despite their small size, armadillos are quite noisy when rooting through forest duff in search of insects, worms, and berries. They use their sharp claws for digging and finding food. Gifted with a keen sense of smell, armadillos have extremely poor eyesight. Upon sensing danger, armadillos scurry off to safety at a frantic pace. Adding to its peculiar appearance, the armadillo also has the unique ability to make itself buoyant when the necessity to cross deep or expansive water arises. In shallow waterways, dillos simply walk underwater on the bottom to the opposite side!

XENARTHRA
Family DASYPODIDAE
Armadillos
This family of 8 living genera and 20 species is found from the southern United States to the Strait of Magellan. The sequence of genera presented here follows that of Cabrera 1957), who recognized two subfamilies: Dasypodinae for most genera and Chlamyphorinae for Chlamyphorus. A species in this family, Dasypus novemcinctus, is the only xenarthran that occurs in the United States.
The word armadillo
As a result of the armorlike covering, the body is heavy; the giant armadillo (Priodontes) weighs as much as 60 kg. Head and body length in the family is 125-1,000 mm and tail length is 25-500 mm. The scutes are brown to pinkish in color, and the pelage is grayish brown to white. Armadillos have small ears. The snout varies considerably in length and has a long, protrusible tongue. The hands have three, four, or five digits with powerful, curved claws, and the feet have five digits with claws. The lower bones of the legs are united proximally and distally. In females the mammae are usually located in the chest region, but an abdominal pair is occasionally present.
The skull is flattened, and the lower jaw is elongate. The teeth are small, peglike, ever-growing, and numerous. There are usually 7-9 teeth in each half of the jaw, but

Order Xenarthra
Xenarthrans
This order, the living components of which are 4 families , 13 genera, and 30 species, inhabits the south-central and southeastern United States, Mexico, Central America, and South America. At least 3 additional genera and 3 species are thought to have occurred in the West Indies until about 500 years ago. The name Xenarthra usually has been applied at the subordinal level, with the name Edentata being given to an order that included the Xenarthra and the supposedly ancestral suborder Palaeanodonta. However, Glass 1985) explained that the Palaeanodonta are ancestral to the Pholidota, not to the Xenarthra, and that the name Edentata should be considered a synonym of the name Pholidota. The name Xenarthra also has been used at the ordinal level by Barlow Engelmann 1985), and Wetzel a ), though not by Corbet and Hill 1986). The living Xenarthra are sometimes divided into the following groups ( Barlow Hall Romer
