Armadillos Texans and armadillos call the Lone Star State home, but who are these armored neighbors? While some believe that the armadillo can be a pest in the home landscape, they are actually beneficial. There is a lot to know about this interesting mammal with tiny eyes, a pig-nose, ears like a donkey and a football-shaped body. Armadillos once belonged to the primitive order Edentata. Edentata means "toothless," a misleading name since armadillos have 32 peg-like molars. Armadillos are now classified to the order Xenarthra. The Armadillo ( Dasypus novemcinctus ), originated in South and Central America and is related to anteaters and sloths. Armadillos traveled to Texas through Mexico and stayed because our moderate climate is essential for their survival. Armadillos don’t hibernate and cannot survive long periods of cold weather. The name Armadillo means "little armored one" and is derived from the Spanish word armada. The name Nine-Banded Armadillo ( Dasypus novemcinctus ) refers to the moveable bands across the back of the "dillo," which can number between 7 and 11. Other nicknames include "possum in a half shell," "Texas turkeys" and "Hoover hogs," to name a few. The name "Hoover hogs" began when armadillos were eaten by the economically disadvantaged during the Depression, when Herbert Hoover was President.

Armadillo are timid, armored mammals that live in warm grasslands and forests from South America up to the southern United States. Armadillos are burrowers who dig underground dens. Armadillos can jump 3 ft (1 m) straight up into the air. Many armadillos are killed when they are run over by cars. Anatomy : Armadillos are protected by plates of bony armor covered with skin. Many armadillos can curl into a ball when threatened by predators. There are 20 different types of armadillos that range in size from 6 to 60 inches (15-152 cm) long. Diet : Armadillo are primarily insectivores (insect-eaters). They dig into the earth using their large claws to find food. They use their long tongue to get ants, beetles, termites, worms, grubs, other small animals and eggs. Armadillos have peg-like teeth. Reproduction : Most armadillos give birth to one or two offspring, but the

Introduction

There is a Mayan legend that describes an event where two rebellious gods were taught a lesson. The legend says that the Mayan Sun God sat the two unruly gods down on a bench before all the other gods. The bench was suddenly altered into a pair of armadillos, which immediately jumped up in the airtumbling the two disobedient gods onto their backsides in disgrace (Gilbert, 1995). I'm not familiar with Mayan legends, but I do know that armadillos are known for jumping vertically into the air. Armadillos are also known to be unique mammals because they have managed to migrate within a remarkable range.
The nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) is an unevenly distributed mammal ranging from northern Argentina to the southern United States. The nine-banded armadillo is the only species out of 20, today, that inhabits the southern portion of the United States. The armadillo, which is considered to be an ancient and primitive species, is one of the only living remnants of the order Xenarthra.

Hands Around the World
Hand Made Native American and Ethnic Sculpture
Hands Around the World is dedicated to providing a marketplace for traditionally produced Native American sculpture. Sculpture making is one of the oldest Native American arts, being present in largely unchanged form. The Indians had created a repertoire of sculpture shapes and design elements specific, if not unique, to each tribal grouping. The variety and beauty of these creations are prized throughout the world. Sculpture crafts are ideal for starting a Native American art collection. We also have sculpture by artists from Indonesia and Mexico. The unique sculptures include dragons, figures, animals, dolls, and warriors. They are made from corn husks, pottery, or carved in wood. Atzompa is a tiny village in Mexico known for it's pottery including the fanciful and intricate munecas, or figures. The Guahibo Indians live in the Amazon Basin of South America. The women make dolls from bark and fiber, decorated with seeds. The Yekuana Indians are a very traditional tribe living along the riverbanks in the Amazon Rainforest in Venezuela. The men also carve benches into likenesses of jungle animals. The jaguar is often used as it is the symbol of the seat of power. The thinker which symbolizes God is another design often used, especially in shamanic items such as ceremonial rattles. The Piapoco Indians also live in the Amazon basin of Venezuela. The Piapoco men and sometimes women carve animals such as the eagles and armadillos from light weight balsa wood, plentiful in the rainforest.

The slapstick humor lends itself to laughter, but after a while it becomes tiresome. Nonetheless, "Necessary Roughness" is a funny film that is worth a view. The Armadillos are in trouble. They won the national title last year; but their corrupt program has been exposed, placing the school on suspension. All of the old players are out. The coaches are out. Now, the team is forced to recruit students on campus, as they cannot offer scholarships. To assist with this transition, the school enlists the aid of Coach Ed "Straight Arrow" Gennero (Hector Elizondo), a man with a reputation for running clean programs. He recruits an old buddy, Wally (Robert Loggia), to run the defense. As tryouts begin, the coaches realize that they have a long season ahead. Their fastest receiver can't catch the ball, they don't have a quarterback that can throw, they are forced to play a son of the school's major alumni, and their best person is all heart, but has "chicken legs."

ARMADILLOS by Suzanne J. Wilson What I see has to be science fiction straight out of an artist's imagination. "I'll draw a creature born with armor," says the artist. "That's cool. Long snout, small mouth, bumpy tongue covered with sticky saliva. Tapering tail with ever decreasing armor rings. More detail - hair sticking out between the chinks in the carapace and below it. What else? Aha! Long, sharp claws!" The artist draws it springing into the air, claws spread. But the creature I'm approaching is real, a living work of nature's art, and it's no threat to me, though it might jump three or four feet straight up if startled. The size of an extra-large house cat, it's oblivious to my presence. All it wants to do with those claws is dig for the insects its sensitive, snuffling nose detects underground. This timid mammal in search of food at the Drury-Mincy Conservation Area in Taney County is Dasypus novemcinctus, the nine-banded armadillo, a k a the common long-nosed armadillo. Novemcinctus refers to the nine narrow plates that allow flexibility in its midsection. Since 1980, the nine-banded armadillo has made itself at home in Missouri, moving northward to and even across the Missouri River, according to a 1994 report by Kimberley Lippert Mackey and Paul T. Schell, then graduate students at Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield. Survey respondents in areas around Cassville, Roaring River State Park and West Plains reported the most sightings. (Conservationist readers participated in the survey.)

DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES

Then what constitutes scientific misconduct? According to Dr. Clyde Watkins of Office of Research Integrity , the official government definition was fabrication, falsification, and plagiarism. We flunked his test. Of three words we used to characterize a major scientific crime , only one was on his list, and we used it out of order. Therefore, he dismissed our appeal for a hearing. Since then, the Ryan Commission has compounded the problem by redefining misconduct as misappropriation, interference, and misrepresentation. Now, ORI has six words they can Babelize to block the public from hearing the truth about misconduct in science.
In reality, we did not get a hearing because our case incriminated U.S. Public Health Service officials, and Office of Research Integrity would do anything in their power to protect them, including a sophomoric juggling of words.
The clumsy deceptions used by USPHS to obstruct justice are more frightening than the crimes they committed to begin with. You can pick up this labyrinthine trail of deceit by visiting

(edentates)

editLink('skunkworks/.accounts/200310302402') 2004/05/18 13:30:16.802 GMT-4 By Phil Myers Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Subphylum: Vertebrata Class: Mammalia Order: Xenarthra Members of this Order Xenarthrans radiated in South America during the Tertiary, when that continent was isolated by sea from other continents. The group currently includes armadillos 2-toed sloths 3-toed sloths , and anteaters , placed in four families containing 29 species. These animals are mostly insectivores and herbivores of small to medium body size (up to around 60 kg). In the past, however, xenarthrans were much more diverse and numerous. They radiated into around a dozen families, including not only the groups known today, but also such animals as giant ground sloths, some of which were larger than elephants; glyptodonts, reaching 3 m in length and the most heavily armored vertebrates that ever existed; and a large number of smaller grazing and browsing forms. Several groups of xenarthrans successfully crossed the Central American land bridge to North America when it formed in the Pliocene; these included a number of kinds of ground sloths and armadillos. Only one species, however, an armadillo ( Dasypus novemcinctus ), is still alive today.

Smokin Armadillos

What they found were six good looking, clean cut and courteous young men. The kind of men who make women swoon. A band whose energy drives crowds crazy. Musicians who make great music. And they're poised to leave country music singed and smokin' with their self-titled MCG/CURB debut album. Meanwhile back at the ranch, when Josh finally arrived home he scribbled his idea onto a piece of notebook paper and gave birth to what eventually became the first Armadillo original 'I'm A Cowboy'(he really is). It was a stompin' romp of a song. Actually it was just the lyrics. Actually it was more of a rap that Cowboy Josh performed on request at banquets and talent shows. Friends kept telling him he ought to add some music and suggested he collaborate with a young fiddler in town. Enter quietly Jason Theiste(J.T), a nearly-silent young man with championship credentials and a bold and boisterous fiddle, Josh's friends were right. Music was a must. A rap and a fiddle. This had some quirky potential.

Amazing Armadillos
Check out these facts that makes armadillos simply amazing!
Armadillos have four babies at a time, always all the same sex. They are perfect quadruplets, the fertilized cell split into quarters, resulting in four identical armadillos.
Armadillos are crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside.
Armadillos get an average of 18.5 hours of sleep per day (just like me).
Armadillos can walk underwater.
Armadillos are the only animal besides humans that can get leprosy.
If disconnected, the sex organs of an armadillo are still active.
Most armadillos seen dead on the road did not get hit by the wheels.
When an armadillo is frightened it jumps straight into the air.
Armadillos can be housebroken. Armadillos have a very low need of oxygen. Even when burrowing they can stop breathing for 6 minutes by storing air in the trachea and wide bronchus. The regulation of the body temperature of about 32°C is a big problem. Armadillos don't survive long periods of frost, except the fairy armadillo that lives in Patagonia and hibernates. The three-banded armadillo hardly digs a burrow; it protects itself by rolling up like a hedgehog. The only opening is covered by the shields of the head and the tail, so that even a dog can't open this ball. As the body fat would disturb while rolling up, the fat moved to the dorsal part of the animal during evolution.
