COASTAL ARCHITECTURE
Reproduced by special permission of the publisher and author.
(Click on each image in the article to view an enlargement with annotation) The climatic contrast between mexico's high-altitude cities on the Central Plateau and the coastal resorts which line the Pacific Coast is dramatic. A quick thirty minute flight on Mexicana transports the modern traveler from a cool, temperate environment to one of tropical humidity and a landscape of palms, jungle, and thatched palapa roofs. Mexico is blessed with over 2,000 miles of Pacific coastline, with an endless variety of rocky headlands and sandy beaches sweeping in a lazy curve from Baja California in the Northwest to Chiapas in the Southeast, where the landscape is fully tropical. In this southern coastal region, architecture appears to have undergone a melting process. Profiles are softer, and the usual definition between the interior and exterior becomes blurred. No longer needed as room enclosures, except to provide privacy and spatial definition, walls have seemingly unwrapped themselves from their usual rigid positions. They float off beyond the confines of interior space, dissolving gently into the landscaping, leading the eye outward to the ocean view. Angles have been replaced by sensuous curves, whether defining the edges of a stuccoed banquette, or low, molded balustrades which punctuate changes of level. Overhead, the voluminous palapa roof is softly draped over low columns formed from palm trees, giving both a lofty interior space and a low, protective eave.

Traditional Chinese Culture in Taiwan :
Architecture
The Art of Chinese Architecture
People who come to the Republic of China for the first time and see examples of traditional Chinese buildings with their curved roofs, bold colors, and intricate outlines may wonder how the Chinese ever came up with this unique architectural style. The basic feature of Chinese architecture is rectangularly-shaped units of space joined together into a whole. Temples in ancient Greece also employed rectangular spaces, but the overall effect tended to austerity. The Chinese style, by contrast, combines rectangular shapes varying in size and position according to importance into an organic whole, with each level and component clearly distinguished. As a result, traditional Chinese style buildings have an imposing yet dynamic and intriguing exterior. The combination of units of space in traditional Chinese architecture abides by the principles of balance and symmetry. The main structure is the axis, and the secondary structures are positioned as two wings on either side to form the main room and yard. Residences, official buildings, temples, and palaces all follow these same basic principles. The distribution of interior space reflects Chinese social and ethical values. In traditional residential buildings, for example, members of a family are assigned living quarters based on the family hierarchy. The master of the house occupies the main room, the elder members of the master's family live in the compound in back, and the younger members of the family live in the wings to the left and right; those with seniority on the left, and the others on the right.

The coming of Clement to Macedonia marked the beginning of a new period of art for the region. Objectively speaking, the history of art in these territories represented a history of church art. The influence of Byzantine art is indisputable, although artistic works created during the time of Clement and the time of Tsar Samuil are exceptions. The construction of the Church of St. Sophia in Constantinople had a decisive influence on establishing criteria for building temples in areas the Orthodox church dominated. However, during the Macedonian Empire of Samuil, new characteristics can be noticed in Macedonian architecture, long after the Byzantine architectural school had run its course. This suggests the existence of a separate Macedonian school of architecture. With the construction of St. Panteleimon in Ohrid by Clement (893), downhill from the Ohrid fortress, the Macedonian Slavs gained not only their first great religious and educational center but also the conditions necessary to develop their aesthetic feelings, accepting and continuing existing artistic forms but expanding into new directions as well. For example, Clement used a ruined three-conchae church for the foundation of St. Panteleimon, added some original parts, and obtained new "oval" forms. A similar procedure was applied in constructing the Church of St. Archangel, built on the southern shore of Lake Ohrid and later renamed the Monastery of St. Naum. Later on, in the 10

And we go out and meet it

Viewed from the centres of European art and culture, Norway has traditionally been very distant and provincial. Not only were we a poor country, sparsely populated and impassable, but for hundreds of years we were under foreign rule. Those in power had their seat first in Copenhagen, later in Stockholm. This is why monumental buildings are lacking and folk traditions have dominated architecture - especially in the use of wood, based on centuries of craftmanship and experience with the material. The proximity to nature and intimacy with the inherent qualities of the materials run like a thread through Norwegian architecture, contributing to its distinctive national characteristics.

A ROOF OVER OUR HEADS
The motto for house-building for several decades was "a roof over our heads." Production schedules demanded a new pace in building and modern techniques were in demand. The first large modern suburb, Lambertseter, outside of Oslo, was planned by architects Rinnan, Tveten and Colbjørnsen who divided the area into different zones according to usage and activities, yet these combine to make up a complete city district. Residential areas that followed tended more and more to lack these extra dimensions. At present, we have turned away from the large undifferentiated domestic projects. New examples of housing are Casinetto, by the architects Telje, Torp, and Aasen as well as Giskehagen by Niels Torp (born 1940). In both projects - built in Oslo in 1983 - efforts were made to create a living environment with emphasis on following the terrain and meeting individual needs within a relative densely populated area.
