Search Browse the Subject Index The Gottscho-Schleisner Collection is comprised of over 29,000 images primarily of architectural subjects, including interiors and exteriors of homes, stores, offices, factories, historic buildings, and other structures. Subjects are concentrated chiefly in the northeastern United States, especially the New York City area, and Florida. Included are the homes of notable Americans, such as Raymond Loewy, and of several U.S. presidents, as well as color images of the 1939-40 New York World's Fair. Many of the photographs were commissioned by architects, designers, owners and architectural publications, and document important achievements in American 20th-century architecture and interior design. The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library's National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a contribution to education and lifelong learning. The Library of Congress presents these documents as part of the record of the past. These primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. The Library of Congress does not endorse the views expressed in these collections, which may contain materials offensive to some readers.

Finnish Architecture in the 1990s
photographed by Jussi Tiainen
"The arts have always been held in high esteem in Finland, with music and architecture being particularly well known internationally. At its best, architecture, too, is music - frozen music, as the often quoted but apposite definition defines it. Architecture, built culture, forms the framework for our lives; future generations will pass judgement on us, on the basis of our architecture, as we pass judgement on our predecessors. The task of architectural photography is to record and pass on this most visible part of our culture." This is how architect Gunnel Adlercreutz, Director General of the Building Information Institute, introduces architectural photographer Jussi Tiainen's second book on new Finnish architecture (Finnish Architecture 1994-1999, ISBN 951-682-562-1

113. Russian Attractions
Photographs and information on landmarks of Moscow and St Petersburg; Kizhi Museum of Wooden architecture, Karelia; monastery of Trinity St Sergiy Lavra, Zagorsk. Hosted by Little Russia.

Major attractions of Russia
  • Moscow Architecture , XIII-XIX centuries
  • Baroque Architecture of St. Petersburg The inimitable beauty of St. Peterburg's architectural ensembles and squares was extolled by many poets. The city dates its existence from May 16 (27, New Style), 1703, when the cornerstone of the Peter and Paul Fortress was laid...
  • Kizhi - The Museum of Wooden Architecture in Karelia. Archaeological finds and petroglyphs bear witness that this land was first settled in the sixth and fifth millennia BC. The rock drawings, the handiwork of the primitive hunter, comprise a whole gallery of mystic signs and representations of beasts and birds. Barely discernible in broad daylight, these sharply but callously incised silhouettes are thrown into bold relief at sunup and sundown; transforming as the sun rises or dips, they seem to appear out of nothingness and are then gone as if they never existed...
  • The Trinity-St. Sergiy Lavra . The unique architectural complex of the monastery was built over six centuries. It contains magnificent relics of different stages of Russian architecture. The Trinity-St. Sergiy Lavra is famous all over the world for its artistic uniqueness and its distinctive appearance.
  • Palekh . The unbelievably colorful art of Palekh is known in all countries of the world. The elegant black-lacquered art pieces on which the heroes of Russian folklore come to life - the amazing fire-birds and the gold-manned troikas subjugate us with a fantastic world of beauty, movement and harmony of their color chords...

    119. All About Spain - Architecture
All About Spain introduces the history of Spanish architecture, describing and illustrating important styles and buildings.
    http://www.red2000.com/spain/primer/arch.html
    Architecture
The oldest works of architecture in Spain of which rests are left go back to the megalythical culture, approximately 3000 b.C. Anyhow, they are probably not exactly what you expect to find here. Lots of Roman monuments are conserved too , among the most important being the great aquaeduct of Segovia and the amphitheater of Mérida. Absolutely stunning is what Moors have left in this country. The Great Mosque of Cordoba is one of the most visited sights by tourists, the other of course being Granada's Alhambra which is perfectly conserved in its original condition. The Spanish Moors created a style of their own that differs in many aspects from their traditional architecture which you may find in Africa and introduced several novelties. This style is called Caliphal style. The Christians who lived in Muslim territory were called Mozarabes , and so is called their particular architectonical style which combines Visigothic construction technics and caliphal style . After the country was reconquered from the Muslims, Moorish architects who stayed developed another new style combining their traditional architecture with Romanesque and Gothic elements, the Mudejar style.
