Why Did the Charles-de-Gaulle Airport Terminal Collapse?
"I can't explain what happened. I just don't understand it," Paul Andreu, architect of the collapsed terminal at Charles-de-Gaulle Airport, told L'Humanite newspaper. The 450-meter long terminal building is an elliptical tube constructed of concrete rings. Andreu, who also designed the French terminal for the English Channel Tunnel, drew upon principles of tunnel construction for the airport terminal building. When it opened last year, many people praised the futuristic structure, calling it both beautiful and practical. Since there were no internal roof supports, passengers could move easily through the terminal. Some engineers say that the terminal's tunnel shape may have been a factor in the collapse. Buildings with no internal supports must rely entirely on the outer shell. However, investigators point out that it is the role of engineers to assure the safety of an architect's designs.

No. 193 . 19 May 2004 San Francisco AIA Awards 2004
by ArchitectureWeek During the past few years of economic slow-down, American architecture has witnessed several trends: thoughtful rehabilitation of a nostalgic past, a quiet exploration of the next phase of modernism, meeting or exceeding strict sustainability standards, and — especially in California — careful reinforcement against the next big earthquake. These trends are all represented in the 2004 design awards from the San Francisco chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIASF). One of the seven recipients of the "Excellence in Design" award was the Hearst Memorial Mining Building on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley. Renovation of the 1907 building was carried out by the firms of NBBJ and . As part of its retrofit, the building was given a foundation system that allows it to move 28 inches (71 centimeters) in any horizontal direction in an earthquake. The evolution from mining to mineral engineering among the building's occupants is reflected in the modernization of wiring and telecommunications, executed carefully to avoid damaging the historic character. In the grand Memorial Gallery, each pane of glass in a central skylight was inventoried, repaired if necessary, and restored. In the arches, Guastavino tiles, a rarity in west-coast architecture, were reinforced with pins and fiberglass from behind. A more modern approach to protection from the forces of nature is visible in the Stinson Beach House, designed by

CVS Write Access Resources Bochs History Bochs Links Related Links Screen Shots Welcome to the Bochs IA-32 Emulator Project Bochs is a highly portable open source IA-32 (x86) PC emulator written in C++, that runs on most popular platforms. It includes emulation of the Intel x86 CPU, common I/O devices, and a custom BIOS. Currently, Bochs can be compiled to emulate a 386, 486, Pentium, Pentium Pro or AMD64 CPU, including optional MMX, SSE, SSE2 and 3DNow instructions. Bochs can be compiled and used in a variety of modes, some which are still in development. The 'typical' use of bochs is to provide complete x86 PC emulation, including the x86 processor, hardware devices, and memory. This allows you to run OS's and software within the emulator on your workstation, much like you have a machine inside of a machine. For instance, let's say your workstation is a Unix/X11 workstation, but you want to run Win'95 applications. Bochs will allow you to run Win 95 and associated software on your Unix/X11 workstation, displaying a window on your workstation, simulating a monitor on a PC. Bochs 2.1.1 Released on February 8, 2004
