Invertebrates - Other Arachnids The arachnids are often thought of as insects but they are completely different. Insects have winged adults, 3 pairs of legs, three main body parts and a pair of antennae. Arachnids don't have wings, usually have four pairs of legs, only two main body parts and no antennae. That makes scorpions, amblypygids, mites and ticks the other members of the arachnid group. (There are other more obscure members which we won't describe here and they are the schizomids, palpigrades, Daddy Longlegs, whip-scorpions, solifuges and pseudoscorpions!)
Mites and Ticks Tiny but sometimes largely annoying, some mites and ticks are responsible for the transmission of serious diseases including Lyme's Disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (ticks) and Scrub Typhus (mites). Ticks feed specifically on the blood of vertebrates such as mammals, reptiles and birds. Mites, on the other hand, can make life miserable for allergy sufferers (for example, dust mites), cause skin irritations from their saliva, or affect companion animals (i.e., mange in dogs and cats). Mites are predatory to small invertebrates but some are plant eaters and can damage crops.

SPIDER BITES
Between brown recluse and black widow, tiny arachnids can cause not-so-itsy-bitsy problems
With its legs extended, the black widow spider is about 1 1/2 inches long or the size of a quarter. The trademark red or yellow hourglass mark is on its underside. (File) By Tammie Smith / Tennessean Staff Writer The sore on her leg, Melanie Ray remembers, felt sort of like a mosquito bite, but it stung when she touched it. "I got up that morning and was walking. I remember that my leg itched," she says. "When I scratched, it stung, burnt. It turned dark, then back like a mosquito bite." But it wasn't the work of a mosquito. It was, she learned later, the bite of a brown recluse spider. The eight-legged arachnid, with its three pairs of eyes and trademark fiddle-shaped marking on its top, had sunk its fangs into her skin, injecting her with a poisonous venom that would eventually require her to be treated with strong antibiotics administered intravenously. When it comes to insect bites, the bite of the brown recluse spider is one of the most feared. In a small number of cases, patients experience serious to life-threatening complications, including gaping sores caused by the tissue-destroying venom and even organ failure when the venom shuts down the kidneys, for instance.

Arachnids The only known poisonous terrestrial species besides centipedes seem to be scorpions and spiders. At least five species of scorpions are known from the Archipelago. Two belong to the Family Buthidae, the relatively large and most common yellowish Hottentotta socotrenis (POCOCK, 1889) (recorded from Socotra and Samha), and the dark coloured and apparently more rare Orthochirus bicolor insularis (POCOCK, 1889) (Socotra). Widespread on Socotra is the brownish Hemiscorpius socotranus POCOCK, 1889. The specimens recorded on Samha and Darsa are more light in colour and need further studies to clarify their status. The remaining two forms belong to the Family Diplocentridae ( Heteronebo forbesii POCOCK, 1889; H. granti POCOCK, 1889), and were supposed to be restricted to Abd al Kuri. However during the last expeditions we found Heteronebo on Socotra too. It is a small genus, but of great taxonomic and zoogeographical interest, because it has a peculiar distribution, with the two (or three ?) forms on the Archipelago, and the next relatives on Caribbean islands. The Solifugae, or camel spiders, have an impressive appearance with their huge jaws and leg-like pedipalps, but they are harmless. There is one endemic species (

Arachnids are one class within the group of Arthropods. Arachnids can be further broken down into sub-groups of spiders, scorpions, ticks, mites and pseudoscorpions. All arachnids are typified by the following features: no antennae

Camel Spiders Solifugida
Camel spiders are one of the fastest running arthropods. Although they have four pairs of legs, they run using only three pairs. The first pair of legs or pedipalpi are held up in front of them and used in a similar manner to the antennae of insects. They have very long, silky setae and are constantly moving in order to locate and pick-up prey. Despite their fearsome appearance and their strong bite, solifugids are unlikely to harm humans. In the past they were considered venomous and extremely dangerous but it is now thought that the only risk of injury resulting from them is caused by shock or infection following a bite. There is no evidence of venom in any part of their body.
Camel spiders are nocturnal predators of other arthropods including scorpions and are voracious feeders. Some species kill and feed on lizards and it is speculated that others kill mice and birds. They rely solely on their speed and stealth to catch their prey. In desert areas they are often attracted to lights at night in search of food and their appearance can cause alarm if they enter tents. It is rare to see them during the winter months in UAE and they are thought to hide or hibernate during cold periods.
Camel spiders in UAE
Despite their conspicuous appearance and size, little is known about these creatures and we are not even sure of their exact identity. There are probably three families of solifugids in UAE. These are the long-legged and sandy-coloured Galeodidae and Solpugidae, and the black-coloured Rhagodidae which has shorter legs and is better adapted for digging. The Galeodidae are commonly seen in sandy areas and the largest species is probably

IMPORTANT NOTE: The spider values are presented as they appear in Gregory and Shorthouse (2003) . A re-examination of our voucher specimens by staff at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa suggest that some of the names will need to be revised (especially for juveniles, which we mentioned were very difficult to ID). I am evaluating this new information, and will make updates to this page as necessary, so stay tuned! None of the general trends discussed in the paper will be affected, so no need to panic. Part 3: Parlour Talk
by Maurice Smith.
What fills us with fear?
For some it is the thought of going to the dentist, for others it is spiders, injections, or the fear of madness or going blind. The microscope in its various disguises can help us examine these nightmares close-up. In this mini series, I will take you month by month, through some of our common nightmares. Did you think Microscopy was about quiet, studious, safe things? I hope not. 'Scoping' can take us nearer to beauty or closer to the savage truth of reality. For this month, let us consider our tiny house guest:-
The Spider !
Arachnophobia
Many people have an irrational fear of spiders. I used to suffer from arachnophobia - 'a fear of spiders', myself and I fully understand the terror of knowing that a tiny spider is in the same room as me. There was a time in my life when I could not go to bed at night without making a complete survey of my bedroom and frantically 'stamping' out the life of any spiders found. That was a long time ago and today I can normally pick up most house spiders with my hand and even let them run over my face and body! I taught myself to beat the fear over a period of years. Maybe I can help you overcome your fear the same way? The first step to beating the fear of something is to learn more about the actual thing which frightens you. Although it is the middle of winter (as I write), I'll go and have a good look around my house to see if I can find a spider to show you. Hold on while I go and look...

DANGEROUS INSECTS AND ARACHNIDS
Insects are often overlooked as a danger to the survivor. More people in the United States die each year from bee stings, and resulting anaphylactic shock, than from snake bites. A few other insects are venomous enough to kill, but often the greatest danger is the transmission of disease. Scorpion Scorpionidae order Description: Dull brown, yellow, or black. Have 7.5- to 20-centimeter long lobsterlike pincers andjointed tail usually held over the back. There are 800 species of scorpions. Habitat: Decaying matter, under debris, logs, and rocks. Feeds at night. Sometimes hides in boots. Distribution: Worldwide in temperate, arid, and tropical regions. CAUTION Scorpions sting with their tails, causing local pain, swelling, possible incapacitation, and death.
