    Arachnids and Silk Production
Silk is produced by many arachnids and has multiple uses, especially for the spiders. 1. Spiders spin silken chambers to cover eggs and for protective retreats. 2. Silk is used for drag lines, which are lines of silk that are anchored to a surface. If a spider is disturbed, it will drop on its drag line and then return when danger is gone. Species of jumping spiders attach a drag line before jumping (maybe in case they miss?). 3. Young spiders, soon after hatching, draw out silken strands that are captured by the wind and transport them to new habitats ballooning. (Remember Charlotte's Web )? With the aid of this silk, young spiders become airborne and are carried by the wind. Spiders are often recorded in air samples from heights of up to 16,000 ft. Regardless of the means of prey capture by spiders, extraoral digestion of the prey occurs. Digestive fluids are pumped into the wounds created by the mouth parts of the spider, mixed with the tissues, and then the mixture is pumped back into the spider. Arachnids include spiders, scorpions, ticks, mites, and other eight-legged creatures. Their ability to bite and their prevalence in homes leads to the Queensland Museum fielding more enquiries about spiders than any other topic. Our specialities are Redback Spiders and Trapdoor and Funnelweb Spiders.

    Significance
Of the roughly 10,000 species of spiders known from Australia, only about 2500 species are described, and only the venoms of about 50 species are known. Hence, it is hardly surprising that the recent recognition that Mouse Spider venom may be more toxic than that of Funnel-webs has been so late in coming. Much more taxonomic research is needed and only limited funding by State and Federal Governments in Australia (cf. USA) is channelled towards taxonomy.

    Arachnida: spiders, scorpions, sunspiders
Namibia boasts a very rich sunspider and scorpion fauna and many interesting, mainly desert adapted endemic species of spiders. The Arachnida forms an important component of the National Museum of Namibia, both in terms of its collections and its research. Groups specifically concentrated on are the Araneae (spiders), Scorpiones (scorpions) and Solifugae (solifugids or sun spiders). Three minor Arachnid orders, the Pseudoscorpiones (pseudoscorpions), Amblypigi (whipscorpions) and Opiliones (harvestmen) are also represented in Namibia.

    DANGEROUS INSECTS AND ARACHNIDS
Insects are often overlooked as a danger to the survivor. More people in the United States die each year from bee stings, and resulting anaphylactic shock, than from snake bites. A few other insects are venomous enough to kill, but often the greatest danger is the transmission of disease. Scorpion
Scorpionidae order Description: Dull brown, yellow, or black. Have 7.5- to 20-centimeter long lobsterlike pincers andjointed tail usually held over the back. There are 800 species of scorpions. Habitat: Decaying matter, under debris, logs, and rocks. Feeds at night. Sometimes hides in boots. Distribution: Worldwide in temperate, arid, and tropical regions.

    INSECTS AND ARACHNIDS
You recognize and identify insects, except centipedes and millipedes, by their six legs while arachnids have eight. All these small creatures become pests when they bite, sting, or irritate you. Although their venom can be quite painful, bee, wasp, and hornet stings rarely kill a survivor unless he is allergic to that particular toxin. Even the most dangerous spiders rarely kill, and the effects of tick-borne diseases are very slow-acting. However, in all cases, avoidance is the best defense. In environments known to have spiders and scorpions, check your footgear and clothing every morning. Also check your bedding and shelter for them. Use care when turning over rocks and logs. See Appendix D for examples of dangerous insects and arachnids.

    Arachnida
Arachnids are spiders, harvestmen, mites, ticks , and pseudoscopions . There are hundreds of thousands of species of arachnids, and hundreds of thousands of species of mites alone. Arachnids are found in nearly all terrestrial habitats, and there are some in water as well. Arachnids need liquid food, so they inject digestive chemicals into their prey and suck out the juice. Except for mites (which feed on all kinds of things like fungus, plants, dead animals, bacteria, and other invertebrates), all arachnids are predators on insects and other invertebrates. All arachnids have eight legs and bodies divided into two sections, the cephalothorax and the abdomen. No arachnids have wings, although some spiders can float on the wind using long strands of silk. Many arachnids use silk, either to catch prey or as part of the reproductive process. Most arachnids have a simple development where babies look like small adults and just get bigger as they grow. But some, especially the mites, go through more substantial changes during growth. Arachnids are part of a larger group called arthropods (which also includes insects, myriapods, and crustaceans). All arthropods have a rigid exoskeleton and legs that are jointed (arthropod means "jointed foot"). In order to grow arthropods must shed their whole exoskeleton at once in a process called molting.

    The Story of Anansi
Anansi the Spider was a vain, mischievous creature, always swindling and hoodwinking others. Anansi was also rich, for he had tricked many creatures out of their homes and land. Chameleon wished with all his heart to take revenge on Anansi, for long ago Anansi had fooled him into giving up his farm, and Chameleon feared his family would soon starve. And so Chameleon thought and thought. At last he knew exactly what to do. Chameleon crawled to the edge of one of Anansi's huge field's and there began to dig. He dug and dug, and soon he had hollowed out a long tunnel. Next he covered the hole with a roof made of dirt, leaving only the tiniest of openings. Chameleon was a most industrious fellow, and though he was exhausted from his work, he did not stop there. He went to work collecting hundreds of thin little green vines. Now Chameleon and his sons together went to work collecting hundreds of buzzing flies. After they had gathered all the flies into pots, they picked them out and tied them, one by one, to the vines. "What are we doing, father?" Chameleon's oldest son asked as they worked.

    ARACHNID'S CLASS PRESENTATION
    (Franck PHAN)

All of the animal species have been classified in several taxonomic big groups, called phylum ; species within the same phylum having some common features.
By convention, systematicians have divided the phyla in several categories, which could be define like this : the phylum is divided in subphyla themselves divided in classes, then order, suborder, infraorder, families, subfamilies, genera, species and lastly subspecies. Within invertebrates, the features of the species who belong to the arthropods' phylum are : a segmented body, exoskeleton is made up of chitin, articulated appendix, a central nervous system, and a growth made by successive molts (or exuvia). The arthropods' phylum includes two subphyla : - the Atelocerata (with feelers) where there's the insects' class (Hexapoda), the hundred legs' class (Chilopoda) and the thousand legs' class, and lastly the shellfish (Crustacea), and the Chelicerata' subphylum (with chelicerae instead of feelers), where are listed the arachnids (Arachnida) and the horseshoe crabs (Merostoma).
The arachnids, which laymen often confuse with insects, stand out from insects by feelers and wings' lack, by the body's segmentation in two parts (and not three) and by the presence of four pairs of legs (and not three). They have simple eyes (ocellus) and not composed, the head and the thorax are jointed in single part named cephalothorax.

Animals of the RRRS - ARACHNIDS TARANTULAS Some tarantula species can live over 20 years. Their diet consists of smaller items than itself, including spiders, crickets, grasshoppers, etc., small snakes, lizards, toads and baby mice. A bite from a tarantula will cause localized pain and swelling. When stressed or threatened, many species will flick hairs off their abdomen using their hind legs. If flung into the eyes or nose of a lizard or mouse, they often divert the attack. The spider will regenerate the hairy patches after their next molt. MISSING A LEG? If a limb is missing, but appears to be healed, over the next several molts (unless males with limited molts to maturity) the limb will regenerate. MOLTING
A critical period for tarantulas is the molting (or shedding) of the exoskeleton. When close to molting it becomes sluggish and stops eating. Approximately 4 times a year for the first 2 years, 2 times a year for the next 4 years and mature adults at least once a year. During molting, the old exoskeleton splits and forms a shell from which the spider must free itself. The tarantulas at the Refuge are mainly here because the novelty wore off and the people became bored with it, or their friends were no longer scared of it so the tarantula was no longer wanted. To scare your friends with a living creature is not much of a life for it, so that is why the Refuge decided to care for tarantulas, as well as reptiles and amphibians.

Note: information below is also available under General Information, which can be accessed while running the Key. BEST WAY TO USE THE KEY For best results in keying specimens, the authors strongly recommend that users select both Retain Uncertainties and Allow Misinterpretations from the " Key " menu by placing a checkmark beside each option. Users will need a dissecting microscope for examination of all taxa, and a compound microscope for many of the mite groups. This key allows identification of all families of arachnids (and subfamilies for water mites) that are known from Australian inland waters. Water mite families and subfamilies are identified in a subkey associated with the taxon Hydracarina. ABOUT THE TAXA The Arachnida belongs to the Phylum Arthropoda, Subphylum Chelicerata, and is typically placed at the level of Class. Arachnids are characterised by having 4 pairs of legs as adults and lacking antennae. Their mouthparts are chelicerae; however, only some arachnids retain the ancestral chelate (pincer-like) form of the chelicerae, while other groups have hook-like or styletiform mouthparts. There are two major groups of arachnids that have aquatic representatives: the spiders (Order Araneae) and the mites (Subclass Acari). Species from four families of spiders may be encountered in Australian fresh waters. Despite being able to survive for some time under water, none of these spiders is truly subaquatic.

Introduction and summary of project and objectives This yellow South African crab spider (Thomisidae), which is camouflaged against the yellow flower head and is feeding on a bee, attracted to the flower, and which assists pollination in return for food, clearly illustrates the high degree of co-evolution between plants, insects and spiders.
Photo from Filmer, M. 1993. South African Spiders. The primary objective of this study is to document Mesozoic arachnid diversity, particularly spiders, through the production of a dataset of records and preparation of systematic descriptions. This data will be used to track co-evolution of insects and arachnids through the Mesozoic era. Further, studies of evolutionary relationships among arachnids, especially those which incorporate modern methods involving molecular (e.g. DNA) sequencing, require fossil evidence to estimate rates of evolution (for molecular clocks) and to establish the earliest divergence times of lineages. The new data will be integrated with morphological and molecular systematic studies on Recent arachnids to unravel the evolutionary history of the spiders and their relatives.
