    LEARNING ABOUT ARACHNIDS
ARACHNIDS (pronounced Arak-nids) are the class of arthropods that include spiders, scorpions, ticks and mites. Arachnophobia (pronounced Arak-no-fobier) is a fear of arachnids, so it should mean a fear of spiders, scorpions, ticks and mites. I'll bet you have never heard anyone scream: "Help! Help! There's a tick on the wall. Quick, kill it before it comes any closer." And you have never heard anyone say: "I'm so frightened of mites. They terrify me!" But I'll bet that you have heard this same expression of fear about spiders. You might even be an arachnophobe yourself. Have you stopped to consider that this behaviour might be a little strange and nonsensical, bearing in mind the following facts:
There are far more species of ticks and mites than other orders of arachnids. Ticks and mites are mostly parasitic; scorpions and spiders are not. Many of the ticks and mites have a human host. Many more humans suffer from tick-borne diseases, such as tick fever and Lyme disease, than they do from scorpion and spider bites. Ticks and mites create high economic costs, due to the diseases they transmit to domestic livestock. For example ticks transmit biliary, Rocky Mountain fever, red-water, and tularemia. Mites transmit Asiatic scrub typhus to humans.

    Arachnid
Arachnid, term for animals in the class including the scorpions, spiders, daddy longlegs, mites, and ticks, and certain other eight-legged land invertebrates. Fossils suggest that arachnids were among the first animals to live on land, perhaps in the early Devonian Period, nearly 400 million years ago. About 60,000 species are known, although many, especially mites, remain undiscovered or undescribed. Arachnids are found throughout the world in nearly every habitat, but they reach their greatest size and diversity in warm arid and tropical regions. Characteristics
The arachnid body is divided into two parts: anterior and posterior. The anterior part, called the cephalothorax, contains sense organs, mouthparts, and limbs in pairs. The first pair of limbs-the chelicerae-may form pincers or poison fangs, and the second pair-the pedipalps-may serve as pincers, feelers, or legs. The other limb pairs, generally four, are used for walking. The posterior part of the body, the abdomen, bears the genital opening and other structures. It is usually equipped with modified gills called book lungs. Most arachnids are solitary except at the time of mating, when a variety of complex behavior patterns may be observed. Females may guard eggs or young, which are often born live.

We do not sell reptiles or arachnids but enjoy keeping and breeding them as a fascinating hobby and learning experience, so please feel free to browse our growing collection of photos and information on our collection of animals. Our snakes are growing and changing all the time. Although we have bred the boas in the past we have no intention at the moment of putting them into breeding condition again this year. We are also finding it more and more difficult to get good photographs of them as they get bigger. As responsible reptile keepers we feel it is important to share information and to help others who may not be as experienced or have a good source of advice. we therefore invite other reptile and arachnid enthusiasts to Email Us with questions. we will try to answer every query either through experience, research or directing you to a more relevent source. Welcome to the world of virtual insects!
If you like real insects, you would love virtual insects because you can see them big without a microscope. Virtual insects are clean and have no smell, they will not bite or sting you. And some times they look even better than real insects. Besides learning insects, you will learn new computer technology which is called virtual reality. Virtual reality is a computer interface that maximizes our natural perception abilities. Static two-dimensional images are often deceiving; it may be hard to reconstruct scales and distances between objects. Thus, it is important to implement the third dimension and to bring depth to objects. There are two major components of three-dimensional virtual reality:
    • Movement - our eye can easily reconstruct the third dimension if the object moves.

Scorpions are arachnids (and not insects); they are related to spiders and ticks. These ancient animals have been on Earth for over 400 million years (long before the time of the dinosaurs ). There are over 1,500 species of scorpions worldwide (they live on every continent except Antarctica ). Classification: Order Scorpiones. These venomous invertebrates live in almost every type of habitat, including deserts rain forests prairies grasslands ... forests , mountains, caves, ponds , and seashores. Most scorpions are nocturnal (most active at night), resting under rocks, in crevices, or in burrows during the day. Scorpions give birth to large litters of live young, who quickly climb onto the mother's back after birth; the mother cares for the young until they are able to hunt. Some scorpions live as long as 25 years. Diet : Scorpions are carnivores (meat-eaters) that paralyze their prey with a stinger located at the tip of the tail. They eat

Characteristics Spiders are one of the most easily recognisable orders among the invertebrates and differ from other arachnids by having abdominal glands that produce silk. Spiders come in a variety of shapes, colours and sizes. They can range in size from minute, with some species less than 0.5 millimetres up to a huge size with a 20 centimetre leg-span. Spiders have the following features in common:
    • 4 pairs of legs Usually 4 pairs of eyes although some species may have less 2 discernible body sections; the cephalothorax which contains the head fused with the thorax; and the abdomen which houses the internal organs Spinnerets at the end of the abdomen, which are used for spinning silk threads used for a variety of purposes, such as the construction of webs, snares and retreats in which to live or to wrap prey Fangs (or chelicerae) used to deliver venom to kill prey, for defence, to capture and crush prey and to dig and excavate burrows

Arachnids are a type of arthropod and share common characteristics such as a hard exoskeleton with jointed appendages used for walking. Arachnids include groups of animals such as spiders, harvestmen, mites, ticks, scorpions and pseudoscorpions. Members of this class are generally characterised as having the following features:
    • 4 pairs of legs. Some juvenile ticks and mites possess only 3 pairs of legs Body is divided into 2 regions, the cephalothorax and abdomen. Although this may not be externally evident as in ticks and mites who appear to have just one body segment The cephalothorax (fused head and thorax) contains the mouthparts, eyes, pedipalps and legs The abdomen contains the reproductive and digestive organs No antennae 1 pair of pedipalps Simple eyes Biting or piercing jaws known as chelicerae
Most arachnids are terrestrial and spiders make up the majority of species in this class.
