65. Aquatic Ecology And Conservation
aquatic ecology and conservation is an important part of the Hooked On Fishing Not On Drugs program. Fishing Line Teaching aquatic ecology and Conservation
http://www.futurefisherman.org/hofnod/hof_aqed.php3
Wednesday, May 26, 2004 Fishing Line:
Teaching Aquatic Ecology and Conservation As a child, or an adult, learns to fish they also begin to learn about where fish live and what they eat. Soon, anglers learn to recognize habitat conditions that benefit or harm certain kinds of fish. Over time, anglers can develop a deep understanding of the issues that affect fish and the world around us. The Hooked On Fishing - Not On Drugs program makes the most of this personal connection between anglers and the environment. As children learn to fish, they also learn how to protect the environment where fish live. The development of a conservation ethic and stewardship behaviors are important goals for all of the Future Fisherman Foundation's programs.
Learning to care about other people and the environment is also an important part of efforts to keep children drug-free through the Hooked On Fishing - Not On Drugs program. The Future Fisherman Foundation provides lesson plans, training, equipment, videos, and other resources to help people learn about aquatic ecology, aquatic conservation, fish management, habitat, pollution, and water quality.

Amazon Rivers Program
Program Director: Dr. Michael Goulding
The Amazon Rivers Program of the Amazon Conservation Association (ACA) focuses on river basin management and conservation biology in the Amazon Basin. Special emphasis is given to the ecology of fish. Fish are the ideal candidates for building awareness of the world's greatest rainforest-river ecosystems - those of the Amazon. Everything about Amazon fish and their interactions with the rainforest is impressive. Aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems are inextricably bound. Many fish depend on fruits and seeds from flooded forests, unique habitats that support tremendous biodiversity, yet remain under serious threat. Migratory fish provide 80% of the protein consumed by people in the Amazon. They depend on intact forests and healthy watersheds, thus making excellent surrogates for overall monitoring and assessment for ecosystem and watershed health.

Aquatic Ecology and Resource Management The University of Hull has been associated with internationally renown research in aquatic biology since the 1920s when the marine biologist Sir Alistair Hardy (FRS) was appointed as the first professor of zoology. This key research area is today still a major strength of biology at Hull and the department is an important centre for aquatic research. The AERM group draws from a range of resources and interests coverings a range of commercially and intellectually important areas from stock structure and commercial harvesting to the physiology and behaviour of model aquatic species.
The research group has a large number of academic staff specializing in aquatic environments. Within this group specific pages are also available for:-

    Aquatic Ecology Technician III
The Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center invites applications for the Aquatic Ecology Technician III position. The employee will contribute to the aquatic research program of a staff scientist. Research areas include microbial ecology and biogeochemistry as they relate to water quality and land-use change issues. Study areas include streams, rivers, freshwater wetlands, and groundwaters in the Southeastern Coastal Plains.
Job Requirements: The position includes both field and laboratory studies. The field component will involve collection of water and plant tissue samples from streams and wetlands, groundwater sampling from wells, measurements of microbial oxygen consumption, downloading data loggers, and other activities. Extensive laboratory analyses of samples will also be required. This includes TOC analysis, nutrient chemistry, elemental analysis, extraction of organic compounds for GC/MS analysis, HPLC, oxygen titrations, fluorescence microscopy, and other measurements as needed. Data management including data reduction, graphical and statistical analyses is also required, thus familiarity with computer software such as word processing, spreadsheets, statistics, and graphics is needed.
Wages: Compensation is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Also included is a competitive benefits package. Review of applications will begin May 1, 2004, but applications received after that date will also be considered until the position is filled.

    Limnology and Aquatic Ecology
The St. Marys River, and the upper Great Lakes region, affords countless opportunities for limnological and ecological research. The St. Marys River itself is the sole surface water outlet from Lake Superior, and is considered a connecting channel to Lakes Huron and Michigan. The St. Marys River is one of 41 areas of concern identified in the Great Lakes by the International Joint Commission, and one of five which share the international border.
    Limnological Monitoring
    of the St. Mary's River
We are currently working to re-establish a program of basic water-quality monitoring of the riverÂ’s physical, chemical and biological variables. Previous research, under a grant from the USEPA, focused on nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics. Our immediate goals are to incorporate estimates of phytoplankton and zooplankton species composition and biomass into this routine. The goal of this sampling program, in addition to generating basic information on the river system and educational opportunities for our students, is to support ongoing efforts to assess and rehabilitate the St. Marys River Area of Concern throughout the Remedial Action Process.
    Equipment used at the ARL:
    • Flow Injection Analysis systems for nitrogen and silica determinations
    • Spectrophotometer for phosphorus determinations (dissolved and total in water and sediments)
    • Turner Designs Fluorometer for chlorophyll a determinations
    • Parr Bomb Calorimeter for the determination of energy content of biota and feed

RESPONSE OF LARVAL SALAMANDERS TO THE REMOVAL OF NON-NATIVE FISH FROM MOUNTAIN LAKES. Robert L. Hoffman , Dept. Fisheries and Wildlife, Oregon State University, and Gary L. Larson , USGS, FRESC. [AES] Introductions of fishes to naturally fishless mountain lakes have been identified as negatively affecting amphibian populations. In 1996, we began a project in Mount Rainier National Park, Washington, USA, with the objective to assess salamander population response to fish removal. In one fish-removal lake, the numbers of Ambystoma gracile larvae and egg masses increased with reduction in the number of brook trout ( Salvelinus fontinalis ). In a second fish-removal lake
