Aquatic Ecology Group Home Page
The Aquatic Ecology Group (AEG) consists of scientists from both the Department of Zoology at the University of Toronto and the Aquatic Ecosystems Science Section of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. The purpose of this partnership is to foster and develop a centre for excellence in aquatic ecology. Research and teaching activities are directed towards an increased understanding of the structure and productivity of aquatic ecosystems. While research and teaching activities are the primary goals of the partnership, it also focuses on developing new links between science and policy. Members of the Aquatic Ecology Group have joined together to conduct collaborative research in the following areas of mutual interest:

SCIENTIFIC FOCUS
INTRODUCTION
The Aquatic Ecology Branch investigates the scientific basis and means to conserve, preserve, and recover the Nation's natural resources. Research addresses ecological questions throughout the Eastern United States, with particular emphasis on the mid-Atlantic and New England. Our strategy has been to address issues of aquatic species, population, and habitat management that are urgent, long term, and scientifically groundbreaking. Our research capabilities provide a variety of approaches toward establishing status and trends, and understanding underlying causes of trends of declining and threatened species and their habitats. RESEARCH CORE RESEARCH CAPABILITIES AND EXPERTISE • Molecular genetics Develop primers, genetic markers, and other means of assessing population structure and taxonomy of a wide variety of aquatic and aquatically associated species, and investigate novel uses of genetics to identify and recover species at risk.  Current emphases include anadromous fish, freshwater fish, freshwater and marine invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles, and mammals.

Mission
The mission of the Forest Service Fish and Aquatic Ecology Unit is to identify emerging aquatic resource issues, develop technology to help address these issues, and transfer this technology to field biologists. Vision The Fish and Aquatic Ecology Unit will provide scientifically sound, cost-effective technologies to aquatic resource specialists in support of the conservation and restoration of aquatic communities on Forest Service land. What We Do The Fish and Aquatic Ecology Unit works with federal and state research organizations and universities to develop technology to address emerging resource issues. Once this technology is developed we disseminate this technology to aquatic resource specialists through, continuing education workshops, presentations, publications, and on-site visits.

Director and the Chairman of the Council Dr. biol. A. ANDRUSAITIS The Institute was established in December, 1994 by joining the Laboratory of Marine Biology of the LAS Institute of Biology and the Marine Monitoring Centre of the Latvian Hydrometeorological Agency. The Institute of Aquatic Ecology carries out theoretical research in marine ecology and regular observations of marine environment monitoring upon the request of the state institutions and the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission as well as takes part in working out a study programme and its implementation at the Faculties of Biology and Chemistry of the University of Latvia. Practically oriented research work is carried out as well-mainly in the environmental impact assessment of projects of the national economy influencing the environment of the sea. The Institute possesses a scientific research vessel "Antonija".
Main Areas of Research
  • Complex environmental monitoring of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga (A. Jurkovskis).

Earliest evidence of humans affecting aquatic ecology in Canada, United States
Inuit whalers changed Arctic ecosystems long before arrival
(Kingston, ON) – New findings from Canadian scientists dispel the belief that European settlers were the first humans to cause major changes to Canadian and U.S. freshwater ecosystems. A University of Toronto-led, multidisciplinary team including researchers from Queen's, McGill, and University of Ottawa show for the first time that prehistoric Inuit whalers dramatically altered high Arctic pond ecosystems through their hunting practices eight centuries ago – a legacy that is still evident today. The principal investigator on the team, U of T Geology Professor Marianne Douglas, is currently in Antarctica using the same kind of detection techniques to study climate change there. "Our findings are an example of a long-term human intervention in a place where you really don't expect it," says Queen's Biology Professor John Smol, Canada Research Chair in Environmental Change and co-head of the university's Paleoecological Environmental Assessment and Research Laboratory (PEARL). "It seems totally ironic since we tend to think of the high Arctic as being unaffected by humans locally." Results of the study will be published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on-line early edition the week of Jan 26.

Jobs offered
Posted: 21 Apr, 2004
Expiration Date: 21 Jun, 2004
The Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center invites applications for the Aquatic Ecology Technician III position. The employee will contribute to the aquatic research program of a staff scientist. Research areas include microbial ecology and biogeochemistry as they relate to water quality and land-use change issues. Study areas include streams, rivers, freshwater wetlands, and groundwaters in the Southeastern Coastal Plains. The 28,500-acre Research Center is located between Albany and Bainbridge Georgia. The Center’s research, education, and conservation programs focus on ecology and natural resource management. The site includes 16,000 acres of longleaf pine forests, over 1,000 acres of wetlands, and 26 miles of stream and river ecosystems. Further information can be found on the web site at http://www.jonesctr.org/. Job Requirements: The position includes both field and laboratory studies. The field component will involve collection of water and plant tissue samples from streams and wetlands, groundwater sampling from wells, measurements of microbial oxygen consumption, downloading data loggers, and other activities. Extensive laboratory analyses of samples will also be required. This includes TOC analysis, nutrient chemistry, elemental analysis, extraction of organic compounds for GC/MS analysis, HPLC, oxygen titrations, fluorescence microscopy, and other measurements as needed. Data management including data reduction, graphical and statistical analyses is also required, thus familiarity with computer software such as word processing, spreadsheets, statistics, and graphics is needed.
