Thanks to Tony DiBella for his helpful, clear descriptions of anthropology
and applied anthropology.
One of his descriptions, I believe, helps make a point I was trying to
make earlier about the bankruptcy of many anthropological approaches to
working with organizations today:
Okay, but even this definition of a "dynamic/process" stops far short of
what we truly need. What we truly need, and what I have had to employ for
over 15 years in helping organizations improve, is a "dynamic/process" approach to how organizations change. That is, not how they came to be but how they will come to become; not past oriented, but future oriented. I confess that I have seldom found it very useful to know how organizations came to be the way they are when I was trying to help them become something else. The dynamics that caused today's "problems" is

Hi Tony,
I did not mean to say that A or AA = KM. And you are right about the use
of the term "KM." It is only been used deliberately over the last few
years by some anthropologists, though several have used the term in
general discussions for at least 20 years, if not longer. But when they
use it, they are using it to refer to the same issues that many
anthropologists have been studying for over a century. When I was at the
University of Washington in the 1970s, several of us in used the phrase "knowledge governance" and just as easily switched to the term "knowledge management" to refer to mechanisms within a culture that influence the production, acquisition, and transmission of knowledge. Thanks to the

I would like to pass this information below along to anyone that is
interested. This is a very dedicated group of people who are willing to use
their expertise and also to learn from others. They are devoted to helping
multi-cultural groups and in particular Native American groups. The late
Omer Stewart spent his life fighting for religious freedom for Native
Americans. Dr. Walker, who I have taken classes from, is very dedicated to
the Native Americans and is now trying to turn around the sterotypes
created by academics and present the Native American as he is today. This
group will be holding a meeting in April. It is concentrated in the High
Plains area, but reaches beyond that. It is not limited to just anthro, but to many other disciplines, business, health, education etc. If anyone

I am curious as to how many undergraduate programs
require an applied anthropology course. Since about there are about
35 more BA's in anthropology given for every MA in anthropology,
most anthro majors never go on to complete graduate training in
anthropology. Should they be given a basic course early in their
undergraduate programs letting them know what options there might
be in the future for a non-academic job?
Why is it that when an engineer graduates, s/he is called an
engineer? However, when an undergraduate anthro student
graduates, s/he is not an anthropologist? What qualifications define an anthropologist? Was E.B.Tylor an anthropologist? Tim James M. (Tim) Wallace Tel: 919-515-2491

I can't speak for socio-cultural anthropologists or archaeologists, but as
a biological anthropologist working outside of academia, I know there are
numerous opportunities to apply your anthropological skills in the
workplace. I chose the biomedical research profession primarily because I
was interested in doing "basic" research in skeletal biology (I came from a
background of mortuary archaeology and prehistoric human skeletal biology).
I found a principal investigator at an institution devoted to research in
biomineralization (Forsyth Institute for Advanced Research in Oral Biology)
and talked to him about the research problems I was interested in tackling (from a unique anthropological perspective of course). He was so enthused
