Applied Anthropology draws on the methods and perspectives of Anthropology and applies them in an effort to alleviate current social, economic, and technological problems. Applied anthropologists work in many fields, both in the United States and throughout the world. They work in such diverse areas as the Bureau of Indian Affairs, ESL (English as a second language) and other teaching programs; various domestic and international development agencies; health care, social and human services; agriculture and forestry; and various business enterprises.
There are three especially active areas of applied Anthropology today: medicine, education, and cultural resources management. Delivery of health services, nutrition, concepts of health and illness, and the hospital as a social setting is all studied by anthropologists in the same manner they study a tribal or peasant society. Likewise, the school room, the school system, and the structure of education can be investigated in the traditional manner of fieldwork, contextual analysis, and cross-cultural comparison. Cultural resources management, spurred by state and federal legislation, employs cultural anthropologist and archaeologists to assist in the preservation, restoration, and salvage of archaeological resources. They are in the demand as consultants to engineering firms that must assess the impact of proposed construction projects on cultural resources, both living and archaeological.

This site has been developed as a response to this situation. It aims to both serve and draw closer together practitioners of applied anthropology working both in and outside academia, students seeking a career as an applied anthropologists, teachers and trainers in applied anthropology, and employers and clients of applied anthropologists. The site is an organic and growing project, it does not simply provide information but relies on its users to send texts and links to participate in the development of this project. This site was developed as a result of Applications of Anthropology an ESRC Seminar Series funded and by the ESRC , the ASA and C-SAP and convened by Sarah Pink in 2003. It aims to provide an online space for the promotion, discussion and development of applied anthropology in the UK.

Applied Anthropology
Program Description The Applied Anthropology Emphasis prepares students to use anthropological knowledge to address pressing human problems in careers outside the university. Through course work and related internships, students will gain a better understanding of how anthropological knowledge and skills can be used practically in occupations related to health and medicine, international development, environment, government, business and education, immigration, and poverty. Rationale Many of our graduates are interested in pursuing careers that will allow them to apply their anthropological expertise and experience to enhance institutional and community life. This emphasis program will give students a solid, well-rounded academic training in anthropological theory and methods as well as the opportunity to develop a professional identity as a practicing anthropologist through internships or other work- or research-related experiences. Three important web sites to explore are: Society for Applied Anthropology (www.sfaa.net) and the National Association for the Practice of Anthropology (aaanet.org/napa). A great source of information about practicing anthropology, graduate programs in applied anthropology, internships, jobs, etc. can be found at the Applied Anthropology Computer Network (ANTHAP.oakland.edu).

Course outline Today a Course links The Facts of Life Organization This is a survey course designed to introduce contemporary applied anthropology to anthropology majors or students with interests in anthropological insight. Our departmental focus is on applied anthropology, so the course includes all of our faculty, who will each speak from their own research and experience on a wide range of applied settings, research questions, and perspectives. I will guide weekly discussions and provide some continuity between subjects within the field, and faculty members will each appear at least once and discuss a subject or subjects on which they have conducted research. Grading
Your final grade will be based on a series of assignments that examine various facets of applied anthropology and include written analyses, oral presentations, self-reflection, and research. All due dates for assignments are included in this syllabus, and it is your responsibility to remember them. Because there are multiple faculty members involved in the course, it is possible some dates of their presentations may change; we will attempt to minimize such changes, and any date changes will always be revised on the online syllabus and announced in class and on the

http://www.iupui.edu/~anthpm/appliedessay.html
Applied Anthropology Essay As part of this paper, you must discuss how you anticipate using your anthropological training and how this is (or perhaps is not) applied. Be as specific as you can be about how you plan to use anthropological training in the working world: for example, if I was an employer and I asked you why you chose anthropology as an appropriate way to train for the sort of work you're pursuing, what would you say? How would you explain to a prospective employer that anthropology provides distinctive preparation for a wide range of labors? If you are in the course as preparation to simply understand cultural difference and not be an anthropologist per se there's nothing wrong with that, then what is it about anthropology that you believe provides you distinctive skills, training, and insight not common to many of academic disciplines? These are questions people have been wrestling with for a while, so consider looking over one of the many sources that examine the issue of defining applied anthropology. The Applied Anthropology Computer Network site, for instance, has basic information on applied anthropology. Also visit the

Anthropologists leave the classroom to work in the real world
By Dana Horstein
Applied anthropologists identify and solve real-world problems using anthropological theories, principles and methods. Whereas most anthropologists once worked in academia, the majority of them now work in settings outside the classroom. In other words, they work in applied anthropology, also known as practicing anthropology or applied ethnography.
The Society for Applied Anthropology was formed in 1941, but the field is only beginning to receive recognition from the general public. Over the past few decades, applied anthropologists have made great strides convincing employers of their value. Increasingly, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies are hiring applied anthropologists to help them solve problems and run programs.
Applied anthropologists commonly work in marketing, education, agriculture, business, economic development, public health and consulting. For example, an applied anthropologist might work as a program director for a research project studying women's health issues, a language and education researcher studying the effectiveness of bilingual education, or an industrial anthropologist studying employees to understand their problems on the job.
Although applied anthropologists receive their primary training in the social sciences, they typically work in many other fields as well.

Applied anthropology uses the theories, methods, and ethnographic findings of anthropology to solve human problems. Applied anthropology at CSULB focuses on practicing anthropology in three program options. These are: communities/organizations, health, and education. Where Do Practicing and Applied Anthropologists Work?
Today, most applied anthropologists are practitioners who use cross-cultural knowledge and anthropological methods for research and action around the world, not only from a university base. Practicing anthropologists are found in all business, government, health, education, and human services domains. They may work for congresswomen, in hospitals, school districts, research and consulting firms, or state and local governments. They are often researchers but more and more, they don't just study problems. These anthropologists are often administrators, program directors, and even business owners. They craft and manage solutions. What Do Applied and Practicing Anthropologists Do?

http://www.bu.edu/anthrop/ma.html
Master Of Arts in Applied Anthropology
The applied anthropology degree program is designed for non-anthropologists who are already engaged in, or plan to enter, such fields as medicine, public health, education, journalism, law, environmental management, social services to refugee or immigrant populations, rural development, or public policy evaluation. It is designed to provide the student with a basic anthropological training and an appreciation of the significance of a cross-cultural perspective in professional practice. The master's degree is neither required nor encouraged as a stepping stone to the Ph.D. Those persons intending to become professional anthropologists should apply directly to the Ph.D. program. Prerequisites Applicants must have obtained a degree in some discipline other than anthropology and have an expressed intention to continue working in, or enter, that field. Prospective students should also explain in their written statements how they expect anthropology to enhance their capability or improve their effectiveness in their chosen career. This is important because students who enter the program with well-defined goals derive the most benefit from the resources the Department and the University have to offer. Under exceptional circumstances, applications for this program may be considered after the regular application deadline date. The Graduate Record Examination must also be taken by all applicants. Course Requirements Students enrolled in the program must successfully complete a minimum of eight semester courses (32 credits), two of which may be taken outside of the Department of Anthropology. During the first semester, the program coordinator assists students in choosing appropriate courses. By the second semester students must select a major advisor from among the faculty. Students are required to achieve an overall grade point average of 3.0 (B) in their course work. During their last semester students may enroll in a directed study course (GRS AN902) under the guidance of their major advisor and begin developing a topic for the required research paper. While it is possible for a full-time student to fulfill all the program's requirements in two semesters, many students often need an extra semester of residency to fully complete their studies.
