    Class Description: Throughout the semester we do two activities concurrently A survey of Applied Anthropology through class seminar/discussions/readings. The topics covered include:
    - the history of developments in Applied Anthropology;
    - methods and ethics;
    - survey of the variety of topics/research in which Applied Anthropology practitioners work;
    - exploration of current directions and career opportunities in Applied Anthropology. Applied Anthropology Class Project At the same time, the class participates in a full-semester class project designed to give actual hands-on experience doing Applied Anthropology. For the last two classes, the project has involved hands-on work in the fields of anthro-planning and cultural heritage preservation/interpretation. Our class assumes the role of an applied anthropology consulting firm that has been commissioned to investigate the possibilities for developing a specific community project and for proposing a set of potential planning ideas for that project. The class members work as a collaborative "consulting team," under Dr. LaLone's direction, to tackle the project and write a consulting report which presents the team's recommendations. See the box above for examples of the specific projects undertaken by the class.

    W. Richard Stephens, Eastern Nazarene College

    This set of sixteen profiles raises students' awareness of how a degree in anthropology can help shape their lives and careers. Using a biographical, story-telling approach, each profile describes how someone used a degree in anthropology to influence their choice of career and change their life. By asking the question "How will my life, and the lives of others, be impacted by my choice to study anthropology?" these profiles encourage students to understand that chance, skill, and initiative are key to succeed both professionally and personally.

    Applied Anthropology
    Applied anthropology aims to identify and solve social problems by using anthropological data, methods, and theories. Applied anthropologists research people’s needs and work with them for culturally appropriate changes. Applied anthropologists also advocate for politically or economically marginalized people. Various agencies, including those in governments, non-governmental organizations, ethnic associations, and businesses, use research findings of applied anthropologists. With anthropological perspectives the agencies can formulate more effective programs which better fit cultural contexts of their host communities. Applied Anthropology Applied Anthropology at UGA integrates anthropological perspectives and methods into solving human problems throughout the world; to advocate for fair and just public policy based upon sound research; to promote public recognition of anthropology as a profession; and to support the continuing professionalization of the field. UGA anthropologists demonstrate a particular capability in helping to solve human problems through building partnerships in research and problem solving; acknowledging the perspectives of all people involved; focusing on challenges and opportunities presented by biological variability, cultural diversity, ethnicity, gender, poverty and class; and addressing imbalances in resources, rights, and power. Such contributions are most effective in interdisciplinary settings where active and committed social scientists work in partnership with active and committed representatives of community, national, and international constituencies. UGA anthropology has several members of its faculty engaged in the practice of applied anthropology. Their research spans a gamut of interests from sustainable agriculture, conservation and the impacts of development on traditional communities. Please visit our faculty page to learn the specifics of the variety of the exciting work being done by UGA anthropologists.

    Applied Research Sequence
    TMCC anthropology students participate in a two semester 3 + 3 credit sequence beginning with fundamentals of applied anthropology (ANTH 229) in the fall and para-professional skills in Social Science (ANTH 279) in the Spring. The fall course focuses on a survey of current topics and an intensive examination of a specific research problem; the spring course covers data analysis and research reporting focusing on data collected in the fall. Fall 2000 students examined Native American student retention at TMCC. We collected data through a variety of methods and put together research design and developed strategies, in consultation with the Native American community, which are currently underway. 2001/2002 students researched classroom scheduling, and space allocation at TMCC. They began by interviewing TMCC staff to indentify some of the the policies and belief systems behind access to classroom space in an academic bureacracy. Next then turned their attentiton to establishing a much needed room contents inventory data base. Their initial research served as the core of a subsequent institutional space utilization study that has received wide praise throughout the UCCSN system. Students pursuing a degree or certificate in applied anthropology are required to take these courses, but any student who has taken an introductory social science course and is interested in making a contribution to the proposed project is encouraged to register.
