public sector (van Willigen 1986: 24). Applied work in archaeology was first initiated during the 1920s when government policy-makers cooperated in public works projects (Fiske and Chambers 1997: 283). During the World War II era, applied anthropologists employed under the community analysis section of the War Relocation Authority studied the problems associated with the forcible removal of West Coast Japanese to internment camps east of the Sierras (Foster 1969: 203). In 1941, the Society for Applied Anthropology was established by anthropologists including Margaret Mead, Eliot Chapple, and Fred Richardson in response to "growing academic bias" within the American Anthropological Association (AAA) (Fiske and Chambers 1997: 283). Later that same year, the first journal of SfAA was published, Applied Anthropology, though the name was changed to Human Organization in 1949. Also in 1949, the Society for Applied Anthropology was the first organization within anthropology to create an ethics statement, which called upon the anthropologist to, "take responsibility for the effects of his recommendations, never maintaining that he is merely a technician unconcerned with the ends toward which his applied scientific skills are directed" (Mead, Chapple, and Brown vol.8 1949: 20; van Willigen 1993: 32). SOPA, the Society of Professional Anthropologists was established in Tucson as the first local practitioner organization (LPO) in 1974 (van Willigen 1993:35; Fiske and Chambers 1997: 285). Though SOPA disbanded within a decade, it served as the model for many other regional organizations, such as the Washington Association of Practicing Anthropologists (in D.C.)and the High Plains Society for Applied Anthropology (in Boulder, CO), which serve as "grassroots" organizations providing members with a forum to share common concerns, to establish identity, and to network with other professionals. Roughly a dozen LPOs are currently operating in the U.S. (Fiske and Chambers 1997: 285).

Department of Anthropology Battelle - Tompkins, Room T-21 4400 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20016-8003 Anthropology explores exciting questions about what is both universal and unique in the human condition. Anthropology, by its very nature, is a consciously nonsexist, nonracist, and nonelitist discipline; long ago anthropologists learned how to appreciate the variety of social and cultural systems in the world and the importance of looking at the human experience from various perspectives. Anthropologists examine fundamental questions about human nature, social life, and cultural imagination. We explore the opportunities and constraints posed by natural environments, by the workings of power, hierarchy and discrimination, and by the problems and possibilities of living in an increasingly interconnected and multicultural world. The Department of Anthropology at American University offers an undergraduate major in anthropology as well as minors in anthropology, applied anthropology, and a certificate in public anthropology. All degree requirements coordinate easily with undergraduate majors in other fields. Graduate training is available in Public Anthropology Archaeology Social/Cultural Anthropology , and Race, Gender, and Social Justice

Explore Anthropology Applied Anthropology What is Applied Anthropology? In the last few decades, there has been a movement in anthropology towards applying its methods and theories outside of mainstream academia. This has been termed Applied Anthropology, Practicing Anthropology, and Professional Anthropology. Applied Anthropologists have used their anthropological training in research projects and in many non-traditional settings, including businesses, corporations, governmental agencies, and medical institutions, to influence positive changes in peoples' lives. Some examples of organizations and agencies that anthropologists are now working for are:

Center for Applied Anthropology
at Univ. of South Florida
The Center for Applied Anthropology fosters applied research and action projects which are closely related to the instructional programs of the College of Arts and Sciences , especially through the graduate programs in applied anthropology . Organizationally, the Center for Applied Anthropology is within the Department of Anthropology although it maintains an interdisciplinary perspective in its projects. The Center is directed by Alvin W. Wolfe , Distinguished Service Professor, Anthropology. While the Center is primarily oriented toward service and research, its activities relate closely to the instructional program of the College of Arts and Sciences. The director and most research associates are faculty members who engage students in their projects. The Center is resuscitating a publications project that was started some years ago while it was a part of the Human Resources Institute. Several monographs published at that time are still available for distribution: (1) Internship Training in Applied Anthropology; (2) Case Studies in Applied Anthropology Internship Training; and (3) Archaeology and Historic Preservation: A Guide to Compliance Procedures in the Tampa Bay Region. The Center also has the distribution rights for back issues of the journal CONNECTIONS, of which Alvin Wolfe was editor until 1994. Those are distributed for $30 per volume (ordinarily two issues). Alvin Wolfe is co-editor of a new journal, STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS, whose editorial office is considered a project of the Center for Applied Anthropology.

20. Anthropology At UNT: What Is Applied Anthropology?
applied anthropology is simply anthropology put to use (to quote John Van Willigen). As you can see, applied anthropology is not just one kind of job.
http://www.unt.edu/anthropology/applied.htm
Applied anthropology is simply "anthropology put to use" (to quote John Van Willigen). It is any kind of anthropological research that is done to solve practical problems. This means that there are stakeholders and clients who stand to gain or lose from the project.
Anthropology can be used to solve problems in an enormous variety of fields. Here are some common examples: Health and medicine Business Human rights Education Environmental issues Community development Museums International development Applied anthropologists can take on very different roles in their work. They may be one or more of the following: Researchers Policy analysts Program evaluators Needs assessors Impact assessors Community advocates Trainers Culture brokers Managers Change agents Consultants To see the range of the work applied anthropologists do, you can look at the applied projects and interests of the faculty in UNT's anthropology program: Faculty's Applied Interests and Consulting Specialties Examples of Applied Projects of Faculty Members As you can see, applied anthropology is not just one kind of job. It can be many different things. What unites applied anthropologists is their perspective on the world. They are trained to look at societies holistically, to respect cultural differences, and to learn about social phenomena through a careful process of observation and interviewing. The flexibility of their possible career directions means that applied anthropologists often have a creative, entrepreneurial bent.
