FINALLY, WE HAVE OUR SANCTUARY HOME!
After 3 years of searching over 150 properties in Florida, we've found our sanctuary location for orangutans and chimpanzees. We've had to consider many factors such as climate, surrounding development, landscape, and nearby veterinary facilities in order to locate a site where we could care for adult apes for the next 50 years.
Our property is located in South Central Florida in Wauchula (near Sebring and Avon Park). It's 3 hours north of Miami, 11/2 hours south of Orlando, or 1 hour south of Tampa. It's a truly beautiful tropical forest setting very similar to the natural habitat of these apes in the wild. In addition to large oak trees, sweet gum, and southern maple, there are palm trees and banana trees... as well as citrus and exotic fruits growing on the site. A creek runs through the middle of the sanctuary, and there are two geodesic-dome buildings to house our office, staff, and visitors. An additional small cottage at the north end of the site will make a comfortable temporary home for students doing observational and behavioral research. (The property and structures have been purchased privately and are being donated to our 501 (c)(3) nonprofit sanctuary.)
We received immediate approval from the county for zoning, and our next step is to build habitats and nighthouses for the apes. The challenge is to construct something which will meet all state and federal requirements for housing adult orangutans and chimpanzees as well as providing enriching habitats with large spaces for climbing and running..... and within a budget we can afford! We've had good advice from zoo personnel and private builders and we are very happy that Lundy Clarke of the engineering firm of CRA Clarke, Inc. has donated her expertise in design and planning.

http://pubpages.unh.edu/~jel/apelang.html
General information and commentary on the issues ( revised 4-04) BUT before you move on to apes, ask yourself: What is human language? What are its functions ? What are the descriptive facts of human language acquisition by humans. Equipped with even cursory answers to these basic questions, you can proceed to the question of non-human use of human-based language codes. Ask yourself how different is an enculturated ape's use of human language from that of an exceptional dog like Fellow or parrot like Alex? (And speaking of exceptional, what is the variability in apes performance? One of the remarkable facts of human language acquisition, is that it is very uniform across a wide range of children and experiences. This may reflect the much less genetic variability of humans in contrast to other large primates.) Finally what we can begin to speculate on what kind of genetic changes might have occurred to evolve language in concert with evolving culture. (See recent reports in News and the old Limber, 1982

This course is designed to acquaint cognitive scientists with the basic theoretical approaches and empirical findings of research into nonhuman primate cognition. In the past 15 years, many new facts have been discovered about the cognitive abilities of nonhuman primates, especially monkeys and apes. These new facts have come from detailed field studies, from experimental work with captive animals, and from research with apes who have been raised in human-like cultural environments with exposure to cultural artifacts such as tools and language. Many of the new findings have come as a result of the discovery that most of the intellectual resources of primates are used to deal not with the physical environment, but with the social environment. The course will focus on three types of primates: (i) monkeys, (ii) apes, and (iii) "enculturated apes". Both naturalistic and experimental work will be reviewed, and cross-species comparisons will be emphasized. In terms of content, the focus will be on two main sets of issues:

These studies were doomed to failure because of their focus on testing whether chimpanzees' understanding and use of language was vocally based. Later research by Alan and Beatrix Gardner, Francine G. "Penny" Patterson and others on the use of American Sign Language in enculturated apes produced interesting results but did not get at the important aspects of human language: grammar, syntax and creativity. To do that, a new way of thinking about and testing apes' appreciation of language was needed.

Hi there
This is a collection of my working notes on ideas for physical computing and embedded networking. I've also included links to various articles and books related to these areas, a bibliography, links to example projects and people doing related work. For the most part, you won't find links to hardware and software resources here. My own code examples and links to others' examples can be found in the code blog , and links to hardware vendors can be found in the resources blog . When I come across new tech that's not quite ready for everyday use yet, though, I'll put it here, so the code and resources blogs can remain more useful sources for things you need right now. There is a separate site for physical computing at ITP , which is the in-house reference for all physical computing related activities at ITP, including shop announcements and guidelines, tool tutorials, parts lists, and more.

About Enculturated Apes Touching the derivation of the name Enculturated Apes, I confess myself, with sorrow, equally at fault. Among a multitude of opinions upon this delicate point- some acute, some learned, some sufficiently the reverse I am able to select nothing which ought to be considered satisfactory. Dr. Lyn Miles, seated, with Paul McCartney, right. Professor Meets Beatle Miles is also president of the Chantek Foundation, named in honor of the orangutan Miles raised as "my cross-foster son on the UTC campus, beginning in 1978." The goal of the foundation is to create a culture and conservation center where Chantek and other enculturated apes would reside, and use tools, computers, art and sign language. "The Community Foundation of Chattanooga can receive tax-exempt donations to the Chantek Foundation, while its nonprofit status is pending," Miles said. Chantek currently resides at Zoo Atlanta, where Miles serves as a senior research fellow.
"When I met McCartney, I presented him with a cocoa bean rattle assembled by
Chantek who uses it in his music and art studies with me. I also presented Ms. Mills with a found art assemblage, a brass and wood macramé wall hanging, constructed by Chantek," Miles said.
‘During the first encore, McCartney pointed to our group and said ‘this one’s for you,’ and he and his band members walked around the stage like monkeys!" Miles said.

FACULTY AND STAFF
The Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Geography at UTC currently has 11 full-time faculty positions. In addition to these full-time faculty members, we currently have two faculty members who has the status of Professor Emeritus, and one faculty member who is participating in a post retirement service program that allows those participating to teach three courses per year for the Department for three or four years. We are also fortunate to have the services of six adjunct faculty who teach for us on a part-time basis. All of our instructors are well qualified, and combine first-rate academic credentials with a strong commitment to teaching. All but one of the full-time and emeritus faculty members have their Ph.D.'s, and the rest of the faculty teaching for our department have at least a Masters degree. The Department's staff includes the departmental secretary, two work-study students, as well as professionals and students whose temporary employment is financed by grants and contracts, primarily from our Institute of Archaeology and our Center for Applied Social Research.
