165. Welcome To The Society For In Vitro Biology
The society was founded as the Tissue Culture Association to foster exchange of knowledge of in vitro biology of cells, tissues and organs from both plant and animals (including humans). The focus is on biological research, development, and applications of significance to science and society.

The Society for In Vitro Biology (SIVB) was founded in 1946 as the Tissue Culture Association to foster exchange of knowledge of in vitro biology of cells, tissues and organs from both plant and animals (including humans). The focus is on biological research, development, and applications of significance to science and society. The mission is accomplished through the Society's publications; national and local conferences, meetings and workshops; and through support of teaching initiatives in cooperation with educational institutions. Over the years, SIVB has expanded to create an environment of scientific exchange and interdisciplinary synergy with the goal of advancing current and future systems for in vitro biology.

Ecological Society of America
Physiological Ecology Section
The Physiological Ecology Section is one of the largest sections in the Ecological Society of America. Its primary purpose is to promote research, teaching, and communication in physiological ecology of both animals and plants. The section sponsors symposia at the annual ESA meetings, holds meetings of its members, and facilitates communication through mailings and the electronic newsgroup bionet.ecology.physiology. Contributing to career development of new people in the field is also a goal. The section is establishing links with physiological ecologists of the British Ecological Society and the Gesellschaft für Ökologie (the ecological society of German speaking countries). Pseudoscorpions
From: R.L. Smith, 1982. Venomous Animals of Arizona. The University of Arizona. Description: Pseudoscorpions (order Pseudoscorpionida) are tiny arachnids rarely longer than 8 mm (Figure 6). They live in leaf mold or decaying vegetation, in soil, beneath bark and stones, and in the nests of some mammals. A cosmopolitan species, Chelifer cancroides , is found in houses. Pseudoscorpions superficially resemble the true scorpions, bearing relatively large chelae on the pedipalps, but they do not have a telson or stinger.
Figure 6. A pseudoscorpion, Dinocheirus arizonensis. Body length 3 mm. Biology: Pseudoscorpions feed on very small arthropods such as springtails and mites. Because of their small size, they are rarely seen, although they are quite common. In Arizona's deserts, pseudoscorpions can be found in rotting saguaro or other cactus, where they prey on small flies and fly larvae that use the decomposing cactus tissue, bacteria, and yeast for food. David Zeh, a graduate student at the University of Arizona, is currently studying the ecology and behavior of several species of pseudoscorpions that occupy saguaro cactus rots. Pseudoscorpion pedipalps are similar to those of scorpions; however, they are peculiar in that usually each has a poison gland located in one or both "fingers" of the hand. A duct issues from the poison gland and opens at the end of a tooth at the tip of the finger. Prey is caught by the pedipalps and subdued by the venom.
