    Crocuta crocuta
Spotted hyenas are the largest member of the family Hyaenidae. This family also includes three other hyena species, the aardwolf (found in south Africa and east and northeast Africa), the striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena), found in northern Africa, southwest Asia and India, and the brown hyena (Parahyaena brunnea), which is found in limited areas of southern Africa, except most of South Africa.* Hyenas are generally thought to form an evolutionary "link" between dogs and cats, being more closely related to cats. Spotted hyena range throughout most of Africa south of the Sahara, except for the rain forests and most of South Africa. They once lived in South Africa, but were eliminated in much of that region. Populations have also been severely reduced in some savanna plains areas. Habitat
Spotted hyenas prefer open country, even semi-desert, but are rarely found in forested areas. They range from sea level up to 13,200 feet (4,000 m).

Behavioral Ecology - A Field Course

A substantive, experiential introduction to the theory and practice of animal behavior and human evolutionary psychology. An intensive 4-week program for mature undergrads and beginning graduate students. Offers experience applying the modern adaptationist hypothesis testing approach to the analysis of behavior. Lectures, discussions, and readings all serve the central aim of the course: to observe the behavior of a variety of animals in the field and lab and collaboratively develop theoretically informed publishable behavioral ecology studies. Flathead Lake Biological Station , Northwestern Montana, July 12th - August 5th, 2004 Enrollment limited to 13 students.

Membership in the Developmental Biology Program is currently at 200 and includes researchers, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, technicians and support personal throughout Vanderbilt's campus. Program members utilize many different approaches in their attempt to answer developmental questions based on their particular field of study. This 'mixing pot' of scientific disciplines has given our members the freedom to adopt an interspecies approach to their research. Some of the fundamental questions addressed by the researchers in our program are: How is the basic body plan of an embryo established? What are the factors that drive embryonic morphogenesis? How is a heart formed? How do neurons choose synaptic partners?
