This sub-organizer contains the following sections:
Prescribed Learning Outcomes

Suggested Instructional Strategies

Suggested Assessment Strategies

Recommended Learning Resources
PRESCRIBED LEARNING OUTCOMES
It is expected that students will:
  • examine members of the Phylum Arthropoda and describe characteristics that unify them
  • contrast members of two or more classes of arthropods
  • demonstrate a knowledge of the adaptations of arthropods to a terrestrial environment
  • demonstrate an appreciation of the diverse ecological and economic importance of arthropods
SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
Arthropods are the most abundant and diverse animal phylum. They have great ecological and economic importance. Through their examination of specimens, students learn how arthropods became the most "successful" group of animals.
  • Ask students to make an insect collection and to create a dichotomous key to identify them.
  • Have students dissect grasshoppers and crayfish, noting unifying and diversifying features.
  • Have students study a quadrant to observe, over time, numbers and types of species and their behaviour.

PRESCRIBED LEARNING OUTCOMES
It is expected that students will:
  • examine members of the Phylum Mollusca and Phylum Echinodermata and describe characteristics that unify each
  • compare and contrast members of two or more classes of molluscs
  • demonstrate a knowledge of the adaptations of molluscs and echinoderms
  • demonstrate a knowledge of the diverse ecological roles of molluscs and echinoderms
SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
The study of molluscs and echinoderms allows students to investigate further changes in body systems. Through their examination of specimens and their environments, students begin to appreciate the diversity of these organisms. In addition, they can explore the commercial harvesting of molluscs.
  • Have students dissect molluscs and echinoderms to examine the features that characterize them.
  • Have students cook molluscs and echinoderms using recipes from a variety of cultures. Students should be prepared to discuss the nutritional value, seasonal availability, and possible health risks of the molluscs and echinoderms used.

BSc (Honours) Animal Biology and Conservation
This course has been updated for 1999/2000 intake. Please take a look at student resources for more detailed information on units studied. The course is intended for two (not necessarily distinct) groups of students. Those intending a career in Animal Welfare (whether in zoos, captive breeding establishments, veterinary establishments, etc); and those seeking a career in conservation organisations focussing on Animal Conservation (such as the RSPB and Butterfly Conservation). It can also provide a general animal-based biology programme suitable for those wishing to enter teaching. By the time you graduate, you should have developed the skills to:
  • Recognise a wide variety of animals out of context, assigning most to class, many to order and some to family. Follow an identification key for most animal groups, using glossaries as necessary, and assign most to species. Recognise a number of common British mammals, birds and insects in the field or in the hand. Explain how different animals are adapted to their environments and recognise how changes in the environment can affect the species' conservation status.

    Biology at Sweet Briar:
    Animal Biology
Although the study of animals is one of the oldest branches of the life sciences, we have barely scratched the surface of the huge Animal Kingdom. The vertebrates are reasonably well known, but they comprise only some 5% of all animals; the vast majority of the kingdom consists of invertebrates, many of which are small and inconspicuous (and often weird and wonderful!). One of the more intriguing aspects of studying animals is discovering the enormous variety of gimmicks they have invented for solving the common problems of survival: finding enough to eat while avoiding being eaten; extracting energy from food in the most efficient way possible; and using that energy for movement, coordination, and reproduction. While animal structure ranges from such extremes as the lordly eagle to the humble sponge, all animals have evolved ways of using whatever structures they have to ensure not only their individual survival, but even more importantly, the continuation of their species. Biology courses for students interested in zoology include the following: Field Natural History
    Invertebrate Zoology

    Animal Behavior

    Comparative Vertebrate Morphology
    ...
    Comparative Animal Physiology

Behavioral Ecology, Physiology and Endocrinology Focus Group in Behavioral Ecology, Physiology and Endocrinology (BEPE) A group of faculty in the Dept. of Biology and other departments and colleges are involved in the development of an interdisciplinary group of faculty with interests in behavioral biology, including the ecological, evolutionary, endocrinological and physiological bases of behavior. The mission of the group is to foster interaction and communication among behavioral biologists across campus to stimulate interdisciplinary research and promote multidisciplinary training of graduate students in behavioral biology. In the future this group hopes to offer a graduate Behavioral Biology Option that would be recorded on transcripts of qualifying graduate students. Some of our activities to date are: 1. During Spring and Fall 2002, we have offered a graduate seminar/journal club in which graduate students and faculty from the Depts. of Biology and Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences have presented their research or led discussions of research papers in Behavioral Biology.
