Part IB Animal Biology
This course is taught by the Department of Zoology.
Aims
  • to show how the form, function and behaviour of animals become adapted to the environment through evolution. to elucidate general biological principles through the study of specialised or experimentally tractable systems. to prepare students for Part II courses that require knowledge of animal biology at the systems and organismal levels. to develop students' practical scientific skills.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be:
  • able to appreciate the complexities of biological organisation and be able to address scientifically controversial issues in a rational way able to interpret material in terms of biological function and the effect of natural selection able to analyse and report on material learned able to assess the scope of animal biology and be able to select particular areas for further study aware of the breadth of studies on the biology of animals as they relate to the evolution, function, behaviour and behavioural ecology of animals

BSc. (Hons) Animal Biology and Conservation
About the course - UCAS Code: CD34
The course is intended for two (not necessarily distinct) groups of students. Those intending a career in Animal Welfare (whether in zoos, captive breeding establishments, veterinary establishments, etc); and those seeking a career in conservation organisations focussing on Animal Conservation (such as the RSPB and Butterfly Conservation). It can also provide a general animal-based biology programme suitable for those wishing to enter teaching. By the time you graduate, you should have developed the skills to:
  • Recognise a wide variety of animals out of context, assigning most to class, many to order and some to family. Follow an identification key for most animal groups, using glossaries as necessary, and assign most to species.

March 1 - 2, 2004
UPDATING THE TREE OF LIFE
Organizers : Site : University of Geneva Theme : Recent molecular phylogenetic studies have radically changed our view of universal Tree of Life. Traditional morphology-based classifications have been thoroughly revised by analyses of DNA sequence data. The objective of this symposium is to present an updated view of eukaryote phylogeny, addressing in particular the problems of the root of eukaryotic tree, the relations between and within major eukaryotic groups and the time scale of eukaryotic evolution. The leading scientists in the field will present the molecular phylogenies of selected groups of protists, plants and animals, discussing the newest methods of reconstruction and timing of the phylogenetic trees. The symposium will last a day and a half and will allow getting a rapid overview of the major achievements in the reconstruction of the Tree of Life Applications should be sent to Jan.Pawlowski@zoo.unige.ch.
Deadline for registration: 31 January 2004

45. Animal Biology And Care
to address the needs of the growing number of animal care and preveterinary nursing students who need a sound training in basic animal biology and care.
http://store.blackwell-professional.com/0632050543.html
By Sue Dallas With an understanding and knowledge of the care required by animals, injury and health can be better managed. This book is designed to address the needs of the growing number of animal care and pre-veterinary nursing students who need a sound training in basic animal biology and care. Particular attention is given to those subjects that students find difficult to understand, such as anatomy and physiology. The book is clearly and simply laid out with over 150 illustrations for easy access to information. It will be invaluable to all those training or working in animal care. About the Author: Sue Dallas is a senior lecturer of animal care and a veterinary nurse section manager at Rodbaston College, Penkridge, Staffordshire, UK. Availability: In Stock

Animal Biology Major Animal Biology Major The Animal Biology major is intended for students who wish to further their studies in the basic biology of large mammals and birds but do not necessarily want to become professional agrologists. While many of the basic science courses are common to both majors (Animal Science and Animal Biology), Animal Biology requires fewer production-oriented courses allowing for choice of a wider variety of elective subjects. Successful completion of the program will enable students to qualify for application to most professional schools in North America, to post-graduate schools in a variety of biological-oriented programs, and to work in most laboratory settings. The program is not intended for students wishing to become professional agrologists as it does not provide the coursework necessary to become a member of the Ordre des Agronomes du Qu©bec.

Those courses which are required are designed to enhance the awareness of current research in various fields of biology or to bring students' knowledge to the latest state of the art in their area of interest. The research interests of the faculty are concentrated in a limited number of areas, namely:
Animal Biology / Physiology, Cell Biology, Ecology and Population Biology, Evolutionary Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, and Plant Physiology.
The Programme is rigorous and demanding while maintaining an informal and friendly atmosphere. It is easy to get to know the students and faculty, most of whom are very approachable and always willing to provide ideas and equipment and other forms of assistance to all students in the programme.

This group's work is concerned with the physiology of animals and insects at the molecular, tissue and whole organism levels. This integrative approach allows a more comprehensive understanding of how different physiological systems function together within a whole organism context. Particular research interests include: molecular and cellular mechanisms of environmental adaptation; genetic and molecular manipulation of environmental stress tolerance; physiological mechanisms of ageing; endocrinal responses to environmental pollution; molecular toxicology; cell transport.
