61. UncertaintyManager
Software for the evaluation of measurement uncertainty in analytical chemistry.
http://www.uncertaintymanager.com
The software UncertaintyManager
UncertaintyManager is a computer application, which serves for the evaluation of the measurement uncertainty in analytical chemistry according to the Eurachem/CITAC Guide "Quantifying Uncertainty in Analytical Chemistry". The software helps the analyst to go step by step through the entire evaluation process. This process consists of the specification, identification of uncertainty sources, quantification and calculation of the measurement uncertainty. For each implemented technique, such as titration, HPLC or ICP-OES, the software is able to display all the relevant influence quantities with their interdependence. The software uses Monte-Carlo simulation to incorporate correlations between different uncertainty sources and applies the Berkson model for regression calculation. The Berkson model allows to fully consider the uncertainties in the x- and y-axis including any correlations in contrast to the normal least-square fitting procedures. The software calculates the measurement uncertainties over the entire concentration range, which has been specified for the analyte. The user can check the influence of uncertainty sources onto the measurement result at a number of concentrations within the given range. Titration, HPLC, ICP-OES and inorganic sample preparation are implemented in the first release.

C arbon-based electrode materials (e.g., carbon fibers, glassy carbon, and graphite) are used in various electrochemical technologies, including electroanalysis, energy storage devices, and electrosynthesis. These materials have similar microstructures consisting of layers of condensed, six-membered aromatic rings with sp -hybridized carbon atoms trigonally bonded to one another. The crystallite size and extent of microstructural order can vary from material to material (i.e., edge-to-basal plane ratio), which has important implications for the electron-transfer kinetics of a given redox analyte ( The electrochemical performance of these materials has been studied in detail over the past three decades, and much has been learned about the structure-reactivity relationship ( ). The use of synthetic conductive and semiconductive diamond thin films in electrochemistry has only recently been reported ( ). However, the relationship between the physical, chemical, and electronic properties of diamond and its electrochemical performance is not well understood and is the subject of much recent interest.

Abstract
Introduction
This was a lofty chamber, lined and littered with countless bottles. Broad, low tables were scattered about, which bristled with retorts, test-tubes, and little Bunsen lamps, with their blue flickering flames. There was only one student in the room, who was bending over a distant table absorbed in his work. At the sound of our steps he glanced round and sprang to his feet with a cry of pleasure. "I’ve found it! I’ve found it," he shouted to my companion, running towards us with a test-tube in his hand. "I have found a re-agent which is precipitated by hemoglobin, and by nothing else." Had he discovered a gold mine, greater delight could not have shone upon his features "Dr. Watson, Mr. Sherlock Holmes," said Stamford, introducing us.

The Division of Analytical Chemistry at KTH is very active in undergraduate and postgraduate education as well as in research. Undergraduate courses aim at giving prospective chemical engineers insights in the benefits of chemical analysis and common instrumental analytical techniques. An important aim of the courses is to teach the students to select methods, treat analytical data and judge its reliability. Two research groups are active at Analytical Chemistry. One of the groups is studying and developing new separation methods for organic and biochemical compounds, with pharmaceutical and industrial applications. Another important activity of this group is the development of chip based tools for nano-scale chemistry and analysis (see also www.nanochem.kth.se

Understanding the chemistry of the brain has been a longtime goal. However, because of the small size of synapses and the inaccessibility of the brain, the task of making meaningful chemical measurements has not always been easy. Direct assessment of tissue content for neurotransmitters, metabolites, and other species has been done for many years, and much has been learned from these experiments. However, there are several drawbacks to tissue assays. Aside from the fact that only one time point is obtained from a subject, tissue content does not yield information about compartmentation of the neurotransmitter among the various structures of the brain such as neurons, glia, cytoplasm, vesicles, and extracellular fluid. Because communication is achieved via chemicals released by one cell to stimulate receptors on the surface of another cell, it is primarily the compartment outside the cells where observations are desired, particularly the release and removal of transmitters. Twenty-one years ago, Ralph Adams introduced in vivo voltammetry (

In the analytical chemistry group, the main research area is advanced separation techniques and the application areas are drug metabolism and the fate of drugs in the environment. The main research area of the pharmaceutical chemistry group is drug delivery and bioinorganic chemistry.
The teaching activities at the institute include courses on masters-level in basic inorganic, analytical, and physical chemistry. More advances courses are given in analytical, bioinorganic, pharmaceutical and environmental chemistry. Furthermore, the institute offers a number of courses on Ph.D.-level. In total, the department is responsible for more than 25 courses. The total number of employees at the institute is around 60 persons including three full professors and 15-17 assistant and associate professors.
