Reptiles The world's 8,100 species of reptiles inhabit every continent except Antarctica. Reptiles include turtles, snakes, crocodiles, and lizards. They can be as small as the dwarf gecko (less than an inch long) or as big as the saltwater crocodile, which can weigh more than a ton. They all have scales, but some reptiles' scales are modified, so you can't see them. They are all ectothermic (their body temperature is regulated by their environment). Most lay eggs, but a few species give birth to live young. Reptiles are among the world's most fascinating animals. Amphibians There are more than 5,500 species of amphibians on Earth, including frogs, toads, salamanders, and newts. For many amphibians, they begin life in the water—the young have gills and lack legs when they hatch from eggs laid in the water. They metamorphose, growing legs and changing in other ways to live on land. The word "amphibian" comes from Greek—both lives. Amphibians became the first vertebrates to live on land, and like their "cold-blooded" reptile relatives, depend on external energy sources (such as the sun) to maintain their body temperatures. more about being cold-blooded Discover the Zoo's reptiles and amphibians:

Pools for Amphibians
North Carolina supports the greatest diversity of amphibians in the United States, some 79 species. Amphibians include frogs, toads, and salamanders. They are unique animals that use lungs, gills, and their skin for breathing. The majority of North Carolina's amphibians live a part of their lives in water or depend on moist environments for breeding, egg-laying, and survival. However, due to habitat losses and degradation, along with increased air and water pollution, 25% of these species are currently in various levels of decline. Amphibians can be encouraged on your property by constructing and maintaining fishless pools. Fishless pools are critical to amphibians because fish are natural amphibian predators and compete for available food. Food and Water Amphibians are an important link in the food chain and depend on a variety of foods including: crayfish, earthworms, snails, insects and their larvae, and algae. Many amphibians depend on temporary pools for breeding, egg-laying or the juvenile stage of development. Some salamanders may only breed in forest pools within mature hardwood forest. Cover After breeding, amphibians live in moist or aquatic habitats and depend on downed logs, rocks, and leaf litter for foraging, solitude, and protection (Cover requirements are listed in the next table).
