Since then our membership has grown from a dozen members to over 100. Our members come from all walks of life and with all levels of interest. The Racine Astronomical Society was established in 1956 to promote interest in astronomy among amateurs and the Racine area public. In 1960 the society became a not-for-profit corporation. Through the generosity of two local executives, Mr. A. Modine and Mr. H. M. Benstead, funds were donated for the purchase of 3 1/2 acres of land, construction of the first building and the 16" telescope. Since that time, three other buildings, three telescopes and auxiliary equipment have been added to the facility. Much of the construction of the buildings and instruments was done by members of the society. This practical side of astronomy included excavating and mixing concrete. Programs of interest to our members are astrophotography, CCD imaging, photoelectric photometry, observing lunar and planetary detail, and observing occultations and eclipses. Several members have traveled to Canada, Peru, Africa, Thailand and various locations in the United States to view solar eclipses. Some members, working for a recognition certificate, search for and identify the Messier and Herchel lists of deep sky objects. Other members are active in the construction of homemade telescopes and accessories. The Racine Astronomical Society is a member of the Astronomical League. The Society maintains contact with other astronomers by attending and/or hosting local, regional and national meetings. Members also participate in many of the star party gatherings that are held throughout the country.
