alchemy
Alchemy is an occult art and pseudoscience . Its practitioners' main goals have been
  • to turn base metals (like lead or copper) into precious metals (like gold or silver) (the transmutation motif); to create an elixir or potion or metal which could cure all ills (the medical motif), and discover an elixir which would lead to immortality (the transcendence motif).
  • The magical substance that was to transmute metals, to be the universal panacea and to serve as the key to immortality was called the philosopher's stone Alchemy is based on the belief that there are four basic elementsfire, air, earth and waterand three essentials: salt, sulfur and mercury. Great symbolic and metaphysical systems have been built from these seven pillars of alchemy. Ancient Chinese and Egyptian occult literature are said to be the foundation upon which alchemy is based. Alchemy was very popular in medieval Europe where one of the most sacred books of the alchemists was allegedly written by the Egyptian god Thoth, known as Hermes Trismegistus (Hermes, the thrice-great, was the Greek god who served as a messenger and delivered the souls of the dead to Hades.) In 1455, a manuscript entitled Corpus Hermeticum began circulating in Florence, Italy. It was allegedly a compilation of the alchemical, astrological and magical knowledge of the Egyptian god. However, it is now known that the work was of European origin and dates from somewhat after the time Thoth prospered. The work is full of magic spells and incantations and other useless occult notions.

    Terence McKennaLectures on Alchemy
Terence McKenna died on April 3, 2000.
In a talk that Terence gave at Wetlands Preserve in 1998, he said: "The other night I searched (the Web) for 'self-transforming elf machines.' There were 36 hits! It surprised me. I sort of use the search engine like an oracle. I've used the phrase for DMT, 'Arabian hyperspace.' So I thought of this, and then I searched it, 'Arabian hyperspace,' in quotes. And it took me right to a transcript of the talk in which I'd said the thing! You can find your own mind on the Internet. I'm very grateful to the people who type up my talks and then post them at their websites ." In the spirit of that last sentence, I decided to post here the transcriptions, given to me by a friend, of a lecture series that Terence presented on alchemy. I do not know where or when the lectures were given. Note: I have not edited the transcriptions at all they are exactly as I received them. As you read these lectures, please send prayers for Terence's safe passage to the other shore . For some of Terence's thoughts on death, click here and here

This site is organised by Adam McLean , the well known authority on alchemical texts and symbolism, author and publisher of over 40 books on alchemical and Hermetic ideas.
Alchemy is a complex subject with many different interconnected aspects. Many people still only think of the quest of the philosophers' stone to change base metals into gold. On this web site you will be able to explore the riches of alchemical texts, some of which are wonderful works of allegorical literature, delve into its amazing, beautiful and enigmatic symbolism, and ponder its underlying hermetic philosophy, which holds a picture of the interconnection of the Macrocosm and Microcosm.
This website is so complex and extensive that it can take some time to thoroughly explore all the sections. Clicking on the links in the menubar on the left will allow exploration of the major sections of the alchemy web site. You can also examine a

    General Overview of Alchemy
Hello! I am Cosimo the alchemist. We Renaissance alchemists believe that we can change any substance into any other substance. For example, lately I have been trying very hard to convert common metals into gold and it just isn't working. Maybe you could help me. Anyhow, I'll work on that later.
Any proficient alchemist, like myself, must have a well stocked and maintained supply of materials. You can look around my lab if you like. (Alchemy Lab - JPEG 48k) Because I do most of my work with metals, my supplies are quite different than those of other alchemists like my friend Arthur, who conducts most of his experimentation with herbs and other organic material. In our times, an alchemist like my friend Art who spends most of his time working with plants is much like an herbalist and will sometimes even work on a large experiment with our local herbalist.

Welcome to the Alchemy VII Website. We have provided some information about the band, some reviews, our concert schedule, a page where you can download some of our songs, and hear samples of others, and information on where you can get our CD's. "Alchemy VII is an Earth Rock group that touches the soul of the planet. It is really hard to pin down or label their music, as many seem to claim them as their own. They have no religious affiliations, but their music is spiritually uplifting and shares a common love of all people for all things living in this universe. Most music received by us for a review is designed for mediation or massage or yoga, but the music of Alchemy VII is made to rock the house. Their music is truly international and inspiring. On the MP3 charts they've had two number one hits. They appear all around the Twin Cities and are currently touring the US while working on their forth CD." an essay from This is It and Other Essays on Zen and Spiritual Experience,
This essay was written in 1960.
To many people such claims are deeply disturbing. For one thing, mystical experience seems altogether too easy when it simply comes out of a bottle, and is thus available to people who have done nothing to deserve it, who have neither fasted nor prayed nor practiced yoga. For another, the claim seems to imply that-spiritual insight is after all only a matter of body chemistry involving a total reduction of the spiritual to the material. These are serious considerations, even though one may be convinced that in the long run the difficulty is found to rest upon semantic confusion as to the definitions of "spiritual" and "material."
However, it should be pointed out that there is nothing new or disreputable in the idea that spiritual insight Is an undeserved gift of divine grace, often conveyed through such material or sacramental means as the water of baptism and the bread and wine of the mass. The priest who by virtue of his office transforms bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ, ex opere operato
A chemical of this kind might perhaps be said to be an aid to perception in the same way as the telescope, microscope, or spectroscope, save in this case that the instrument is not an external object but an internal state of the nervous system. All such instruments are relatively useless without proper training and preparation not only in their handling, but also in the particular field of investigation

The hardest thing you can ask them is how old they are. The question seems to rock them back, to give them pause. "I guess I'm 38," one of them tells me uncertainly. "I must be 54," another answers, after even longer deliberation. It's not that these men are slow, it's that they're physicists. And they're involved in a new research area as promising as it is strange, so if they seem a little distracted, well, c'est la vie. Despite modesty and caution so deeply ingrained that it might well be genetic, they also project an air of barely contained excitement. They're building the future, and they know it. To understand how and why, it helps to be at least passingly familiar with the areas of nanotechnology and micro-electromechanical systems. Both offer great promise in creating forms of matter that are substantially more capable than anything nature has to offer. But nanotechnology faces inherent limitations in communications, power, and materials distribution, while MEMS have short operating lifetimes and will always have trouble creating precise micro- and nanostructures other than simple chemicals. There will of course be myriad applications, some of them quite amazing, but by the time they find their way into the real world, both nanotech and MEMS may wind up looking less magical than even a humble television screen, which after all can change its appearance instantly and completely. But there may be a truly programmable substance in our future that is capable of changing its apparent physical and chemical properties as easily as a TV screen changes color. Lead to gold, baby, on demand. Call it programmable matter.
