The goal of the Air Quality Program is to achieve and maintain reasonable levels of air quality to protect human health, safety and welfare and the National Ambient Air Quality Standards established through the Federal Clean Air Act. The department implements this goal by staffing ambient air monitoring and permitting sections. To determine the quality of our air, we conduct ambient air monitoring at potentially high air pollution areas across the state. The Guidelines aim to provide a basis to protect public health from the adverse effects of air pollutants, and to eliminate or reduce to a minimum, those pollutants that are known or are likely to be hazardous to human health and wellbeing. In providing pollutant levels below which lifetime exposure or exposure for a given averaging time does not constitute a health risk, they form a basis for setting national standards for air pollution. Since the publication of the first edition, new scientific data in the fields of air pollution, toxicology and epidemiology have emerged and new developments in risk assessment methodologies have taken place. Therefore, updating and/or revision of the existing guidelines was undertaken by the Air Quality Unit of the WHO European Centre for Environment and Health. The work could only be achieved thanks to the immense support on the part of a large number of experts who contributed to the various working group meetings evaluating the draft chapters on the different air pollutants.
