    Air quality research
Airborne pollutants have been monitored by the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) since the early 1970's. Models have been developed to simulate the transport, dispersion and deposition of these pollutants.
The research on air quality is in accordance with the main research topic areas at the FMI. Research activities are mainly under the headings Atmospheric Modelling and Global Change:
    Atmospheric Modelling/Air Pollution Dispersion Modelling
    • urban scale models
    • regional models
    • models for hazardous substances
    Global Change/Air Chemistry
    • greenhouse gases and carbon cycling
    • atmospheric aerosols
    • tropospheric ozone
In addition to the above research topic areas, Air Quality Assessment and Monitoring is a priority research area at the FMI.
We also provide Air Quality Services

    133. NOAA Air Resources Laboratory
Within the U.S.'s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the ARL conducts research on the transport, dispersion, transformation, and removal of atmospheric pollutants leading to the development of air quality and dispersion models. The ARL also supports other U.S. agencies. In particular, the ARL's Atmospheric Turbulence Diffusion Division (ATTD) and Atmospheric Sciences modeling Division (ASMD) support the U.S. EPA in developing regulatory air dispersion models.

    Bruce B. Hicks, Director
The Air Resources Laboratory (ARL), conducts research on processes that relate to air quality and climate, concentrating on the transport, dispersion, transformation, and removal of trace gases and aerosols, their climatic and ecological influences, and exchange between the atmosphere and biological and non-biological surfaces. The time frame of interest ranges from minutes and hours to that of the global climate. Research in all of these areas involves physical and numerical studies, leading to the development of air quality simulation models. ARL provides scientific and technical advice to elements of NOAA and other Government agencies on atmospheric science, environmental problems, emergency assistance (Homeland Security), and climate change.

    Our Approach
We employ a suite of models, allowing us to choose the right level of sophistication for the job at hand. This process starts with a solid conceptual understanding of the flow phenomena. One can then choose a modeling approach, which embodies all the relevant physics while avoiding undue complications that only add expense without improving the result.
