The nineteenth annual Women In Agriculture Conference was held September 11-12, 2003 in Kearney, Nebraska. This year’s conference hosted 425 women representing 5 states and 79 counties in Nebraska. As in the past, lenders played a large part, 233 of the women who attended were sponsored by their local lender. The conference took on a special format this year as a time of healing and sharing due to the untimely death of Deb Rood, Conference Coordinator. This year’s conference offered nineteen workshops focusing on
  • Computerized record keeping.
  • Income tax management.
  • Estate planning.
  • Marketing and financial workshops.
  • Other topics included family relations, water issues, kid’s chores, communication, understanding debt, beautifying your home from the outside in, and how to bring out the B.E.S.T. in ourselves.
Many programs have been developed as a result of the success of this conference.

Latest News State Bond Commission to Approve 7 Farms for Preservation
Governor Rowland has announced that the State Bond Commission will provide $2.2 million to the Department of Agriculture's Farmland Preservation Program to purchase the development rights to seven farms. Your new 2004 "CT Grown Pick Your Own Fruits and Vegetables" brochure is ready! The official Connecticut guide to the local Pick Your Own farms will carry you through an entire season of the freshest and the best that Connecticut farms can grow for you to pick yourself. From early summer strawberries to late fall pumpkins, season after season, our farmers across Connecticut offer an abundance of easy picking fields of the freshest fruits and vegetables while spending a great day on the farm. Free Guide Helps Connecticut's Farmers and Communities Protect Land and Save Money Agriculture is a significant part of Connecticut's heritage and economy, yet the state loses over 8,000 acres of land in farms every year. To help curb this loss of land, American Farmland Trust (AFT), with the assistance of the Connecticut Department of Agriculture, has developed a new tool that will help landowners, land trusts and communities identify options available to help protect and conserve farmland.

Why teach about agriculture?
America is truly a land of plenty. Superior productivity of American agriculture has allowed our citizens the freedom to pursue other ventures, assured that their food and other raw materials would be amply supplied. Agriculture has certainly been a major contributor to the success and greatness of our country.
Our society has grown away from its agrarian roots and is losing a fundamental understanding and appreciation for food and fiber systems. As part of our legacy to our children, it is critical that we leave them with knowledge of the earth, how to care for it and how to obtain its bounties.
From traditions of agriculture history to the findings of the latest science, all of the information is valuable to the sustenance of the next generation.
