Welcome to the MABE Department's Web site. On this page is some basic information on the MABE department. Please peruse our site and get in-touch with us if you have any questions.
If you are new to our site, or to engineering in general, you might ask "What do Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineers do?"
The trademarks of mechanical engineering are: 1) power generation and 2) power transmission. The origin of modern day mechanical engineering goes back to James Watt and the steam engine. Today, ME's are more interested in: steam turbines, gas turbines, internal combustion engines and hybrid electric vehicles. Because of the broad background in the applied sciences, ME's are found in nearly every industry and at all levels of engineering and management.
Aerospace engineering
deals with both aircraft and space systems. The curriculum includes courses on airplane performance, aerodynamics, compressible flow, aerospace propulsion, structures, and astronautics. During their senior year, students participate in a capstone design project on a topic that they help to choose. Recent projects have included the design of both civil and military aircraft as well as the design and construction of a working hybrid rocket engine. Employment opportunities have been very good, with graduates from recent classes going to work for Boeing, Honeywell, Lockheed-Martin, and China Lake Naval Air Warfare Center.

Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics has a long and illustrious history at The University of Alabama. Aeronautical engineering courses were first taught at The University of Alabama in 1928. In 1937, the Department of Aeronautical Engineering at The University of Alabama was among the first 10 aeronautical engineering programs to become fully accredited in the United States and has maintained its accreditation ever since. In 1961, it was renamed the Department of Aerospace Engineering.
The University of Alabama established a Department of Engineering Mechanics in 1912. In 1993, it was renamed the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics, to reflect its evolving interests.
In 1996, the Department of Aerospace Engineering and the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics were merged to form The Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics.
The Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics Department offers four degree programs: (1) a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering, (2) a Master's Degree in Aerospace Engineering, (3) a Master's Degree in Engineering Science and Mechanics, and (4) a Ph.D. in Engineering Science and Mechanics.

mdw@liv.ac.uk Aerospace Engineering A erospace – the choice of creative, imaginative and technically minded students Students have the opportunity to develop control concepts for advanced aircraft configurations like this artist’s impression of the Eurocopter EUROTILT civil tilt rotor aircraf t Aerospace excites the imagination - who can fail to be impressed by the sight of a modern airliner taking off, a state-of-the-art fighter showing off its manoeuvres, the Space Shuttle docking with a space station or a helicopter rescuing survivors of an accident. All of these situations reflect astonishing engineering achievements, challenging the frontiers of aeronautical, mechanical, electrical, materials and computing engineering. We need also to acknowledge the managerial energy and skill required to bring complex aerospace projects to successful fruition. Why Liverpool ?
