Nature of the Work Employment Job Outlook Earnings ... Sources of Additional Information
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Aerospace engineers create extraordinary machines, from airplanes that weigh over a half a million pounds to spacecraft that travel over 17,000 miles an hour. They design, develop, and test aircraft, spacecraft, and missiles and supervise the manufacture of these products. Aerospace engineers who work with aircraft are called aeronautical engineers , and those working specifically with spacecraft are astronautical engineers Aerospace engineers develop new technologies for use in aviation, defense systems, and space exploration, often specializing in areas such as structural design, guidance, navigation and control, instrumentation and communication, or production methods. They often use computer-aided design (CAD) software, robotics, and lasers and advanced electronic optics. They also may specialize in a particular type of aerospace product, such as commercial transports, military fighter jets, helicopters, spacecraft, or missiles and rockets. Aerospace engineers may be experts in aerodynamics, thermodynamics, celestial mechanics, propulsion, acoustics, or guidance and control systems. Aerospace engineers typically are employed in the aerospace product and parts industry, although their skills are becoming increasingly valuable in other fields. For example, in the motor vehicles manufacturing industry, aerospace engineers design vehicles that have lower air resistance and, thus, increased fuel efficiency.

DIRECTIONS

Message from the Chair The Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering (MMAE) Department at IIT offers great programs in all three areas of Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering. We continually update and improve our curriculum to provide an even better education for our students. Our enrollment in MMAE is growing, and the quality of our students is high. We currently have 261 undergraduates and 142 graduate students. It is our top priority to attract outstanding students to the MMAE undergraduate and graduate programs; to accomplish this we offer competitive financial packages (e.g. research and teaching assistantships for graduate students, and scholarships for undergraduate students) to highly qualified students. I encourage qualified students to apply to our programs and take advantage of such opportunities. The MMAE Department is very active in research. Currently, there are two research centers in the department, the Fluid Dynamics Research Center and the Thermal Processing Technology Center. The department also has several state-of-the-art laboratories in various research fields. We intend to increase collaborations with industry. I urge the industry professionals to take advantage of our faculty expertise and research capabilities. Recently, the External Advisory Board of the MMAE Department unanimously endorsed faculty collaborations with Midwestern industry (
